It is a lovely garden which has only a few steps and also has ramps making it wheelchair friendly. It has similar architecture to other gardens , fountains located centrally in step wise manner and lawns and flowers on the sides. It is surrounded by chinar trees . Outside the garden are few shops for food and shopping also. They charge entry fee of ₹ 20 per adult. Overall a worth visiting garden

Looks like an amazing garden in general. But right now a couple buildings are under construction and the water is turned off so the fountains are not there. It is in a beautiful setting and if this is your only chance to see it, I guess you go, but you know you’re missing the beauty of flowing water.

Preference wise we preferred Shalimar gardens to Nishat as this was more well kept and beautiful. It was also less crowded when we visited as you can spend an hour peacefully walking around and viewing the Chinar trees (one of the oldest Chinar trees are here) and the beautiful flowers. Not to be missed when in Srinagar.

Shalimar garden is a better place to visit vis-a-vis Nishat garden in Srinagar. Not only it is more beautiful, it is also less crowded and you can spend time peacefully in the garden. There are very old chinar trees and beautiful tulip flowers in the garden.

You can spend 45-60 minutes here having a stroll and looking at the fountains. You will be reminded of several songs from Indian movies (across languages) shot here in the 60s and 70s. There are hardly any flowering plants. It is, however, a great place for a picnic if the weather permits.

Beautiful place and one of the best Mughal garden in Srinagar. This place has a different charm in different seasons. Lush green in summers, golden in autumn and rusty surreal in winters.
I happen to visit in December and had a surreal experience.Visit here if you want some peaceful quiet time with your self.

We visited this garden towards end of September. It seemed to be under renovation. There were hardly any flowers and the springs were not working. Even the few flowers that were there were withering.
Renovation is necessary. However in such times it is better to keep the garden closed to the public. It was a waste of time and money. We could have utilized our time in seeing so many other beautiful places in and around Srinagar.Hope the authorities keep this in mind when ever there is renovation .

Visited in April 2012. Shalimar Bagh is one of the finest Mughal garden, built by Emperor Jahangir. Indeed very romantic. You will be fascinated to see a number of fountains and canals in this bagh. We could not see the light and sound show this time. However, during my first visit to Kashmir more than a decade ago, I had seen the light and sound show. The show takes you way back in the Mughal Era. One actually feels that the Mughal era has come alive.
One can definitely spend an evening in this romantic garden watching the tall trees, canals and fountains. And if you happen to visit Kashmir, when the mountain peaks are full of snow, then watching those from this garden would be just icing on the cake.
Do visit here on your trip to Kashmir

The entire length of this massive garden is lined with beautiful fountains, placed in stepped gardens along Mughal architecture, that lends this garden its characteristic and true essence, a beauty to behold!

What do we learn from the architecture of shalimar bagh?
Why people should come and visit the shalimar bagh?
Written 28 June 2015
The history of Shalimar Gardens can be traced back to the 2nd century. King Pravarsena II from Vataka dynasty who ruled Kashmir from 79 AD till 139 AD was the founder of Srinagar. He built a cottage surrounded by a park close to Dal Lake and named it Shalimar. The name Shalimar comes from Sanskrit language which means “Abode of Love”. Over the centuries, the cottage was ruined, but the name Shalimar got stuck to the village where this was located.
In 1619 AD, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir renovated the garden into a Mughal Garden, to please his beautiful wife Nur Jahan and the two spent their summers here along with their courtesans. The three terraced Mughal garden is an adaptation of the Persian style of gardens. The gardens, designed around the central axial canal were used as- Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-khas and the Zanana area. The fountain pools have 410 fountains in total and are fed by the naturally flowing central channel of water, flowing down from the snow covered mountains forming the lovely backdrop to the gardens.
The black pavilion in the top terrace of Shalimar Bagh has the famous inscription in Persian, written by Persian Poet Amir Khusrau-
“
Agar Firdaus bar rōy-e zamin ast, hamin ast-o hamin ast-o hamin ast”.
Translated in English it means-
“ If there is a paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here”
A chronicler has described the magic of Shalimar Bagh thus:
"A subtle air of leisure and repose, a romantic indefinable spell, pervades the royal Shalimar: this leafy garden of dim vistas, shallow terraces, smooth sheets of falling water, and wide canals, with calm reflections broken only by the stepping stones across the streams".
