I found this statue of Medea a bit odd, as according to the Greek myth her role was to help Jason and his Argonauts retrieve the golden fleece. Here we see Medea holding the fleece in her hand! Perhaps the artist missed the clue of the story or misread one of the many different narratives.

Anyway the message of erecting statues like this is clear: ancient Colchis (Kolkheti) was connected with Europe and so is present-day Georgia. The monument looks brand new, because it is from 2007 and well maintained.

Located in the beautiful Europe square, the monument depicts the story of Medea from Greek mythology. As per the legend, Medea helped Jason steal the Golden fleece. It shows the statue of Georgian princess Medea holding a golden fleece in her hands. The statue is placed on top of a tall column making it the centerpiece of the square. The statue and the myth also signify ancient connections between Georgia and Europe.

best to read up on local national history, and then when passing the monument you know what you are viewing, as there isn't much of signage there

The statue of Medea is what best we can find in Europe Square. White marble, and gold, are combined to symbolise the wealth and happiness of the Georgian people. I wonder very much whether Adjara of all regions was ancient Colchis. Perhaps Batumi lives on the new myth of oil, gambling, and money???

This is another monument which has been constructed in the recent building frenzy in Batumi. At night time it is a little difficult to clearly make out the details of this monument, but it's still worth a look if you're already nearby.

The Medea Monument is located on the European square in Batumi. The square is dominated by a statue with a golden fleece. This monument, built in 2007, is dedicated to Medea, which, according to myth, helped Jason to steal the golden fleece belonging to her father.

Went by this monument daily and admired the story of Medea and her connection to the Georgian people. Love the sheep on one arm! A favorite park of locals. Sad that there is a McDonalds nearby though.
