Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Took a taxi tour to the highlands part of the island. This was my first stop before Chinco Beach and the Tortoise Center. A nice hike to the top where you’ll see hundreds of frigate birds cleaning the salt off of their feathers. Make sure you wear good shoes for the stairs and trails.

My taxi driver Eduardo was so kind. Because I was a solo traveler, he walked with me to all of the places. Plus, the $50 fare was a bargain for more than a half day. Give him a call if you want a safe taxi tour with a great driver who is knowledgeable. Someone will find his number for you: Juan Eduardo Manotoa Cedeno

I'd suggest a guided tour. The views are really impressive. You'll have to walk up the mountain which is maybe a ten minute climb. The weather is a good bit cooler than in town, too. At the top, you can see almost all over the island. There are no bathrooms at the top, and only outhouses at the bottom. There are many birds to see, but I didn't see any other wildlife. It would be a great spot for a picnic.

In Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal island, most of the taxis will take you on a half-day excursion that goes to El Junco lagoon where you hike to a verdent crater lake with nice views, then takes you to the San Cristobal Galapaguera where you can see tortoises roaming around and the breeding center where they have the tiny ones. And the trip finally takes you to a beautiful beach where you can swim or just watch the wildlife. This entire tour is $60 per carload. The hike to the lake is very pleasant, up a clean path with steps. The views are spectacular and we decided to walk all the way around the lake which took us about 30 minutes. We spent about an hour doing the entire hike. We definitely recommend this if the weather is good.

El Junco requires a steep uphill climb of about 15 minutes to reach. The trail is rocky but good. It's higher in elevation so it's nice and cool. The lake is misty and lovely, with frigate birds bathing or flying around. No swimming allowed, but a nice view! You can take a hike around the rim too. I recommend it as part of a 4 hour tour by taxi from town ($60) to see the other sites along the way.

Went to El Junco lagoon when it wasn’t that sunny for something to do. Short drive to the area and free to get in. Was very interesting how misty and mysterious it was but at the same time this made it difficult to actually see anything. Could see some Friargate birds in the distance flying around - males and females but not a whole lot else. You can walk around the entire lagoon - takes maximum 30minutes to do so and is peaceful and a lovely walk. Would recommend - not sure it’s always this misty on good days?

We rented a taxi and visited this fresh water lake, 700 m above sea level. There are spectacular panoramic views at the top. We were lucky as it was clear! We heard that often the crater lake is misted in and the views are limited but we had a slightly overcast/sunny day. A short 10 minute hike from the parking area leads to the top, after which you can, on a good day walk all the way around the crater. Wear good walking shoes. It is good to then go to the Centro de Tortugas Terrestres and then head to lunch at Otoy, an organic farm. No reservations needed for lunch. This was a wonderful outing!

We took a taxi from the center of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to the base of this volcano and climbed up the wooden staircase to the top where we could look down on the lake formed by a volcanic eruption. we circumnavigated the crater which had a well-trodden trail that was not difficult to negotiate. The most difficulty was avoiding the donkey poop on the trail and the occasional patch of slippery mud.A windbreaker is handy for the windy side of the volcano. On our return we caught a taxi on its way back to the center. He took us on a little tour of the village of Progresso and charged us $10., half what we paid on the trip to El Junco.

The most practice way to visit it is to take a "cab" , expecting to pay usd 35 for the car, round trip. On Sundays, there is also a municipal bus (expect to oay usd 2)that leaves at 8am from the Municipal Market. One of the stops of the bus is at El Junco Lagoon and the final Stop is at La Galapaguera. The only thing you should be aware of is that the bus just gets back to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno around 4pm.
If the weather is not great (meaning foggy) you may not see anything.

El Junco is a freshwater ancient caldera lake that is what caused San Cristobal to be the first Galapagos island to be settled. Takes 30 to 60 minutes to hike all the way around it, depending on your pace. If it's misty/raining, it's hard to see much, but I'm sure it's beautiful on a clear day. Hard to plan for a clear day, though, because it can be clear in town but raining at El Junco, because of the elevation difference.
