Rijeka’s St. Vitus Cathedral is the only Baroque rotunda of monumental dimensions built on Croatian land. The construction of this church began in 1638 based on the design of the Jesuit architect G. Brian. The eminent Venetian church, Santa Maria della Salute, served as s model. An elevated spot was chosen for the construction of St. Vitus church at the heart of the then medieval urban tissue. Initially there was a small church of the same name located on the same site, dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The Jesuit order, as creator of the project, immediately decided to use the cult of the wooden Magic crucifix from the original church, which popular legend says began to bleed when a certain Petar Lončarić, threw a stone on it in fear after losing at gambling.

Very special piece of history. Very nice church, basically a must-see in Rijeka. Unique from outside in architectural way, unique from inside in artificial way.

The cathedral, as we see it today was first a Jesuits’ church and it was built upon their arrival in Rijeka in the first half of the seventeenth century. It was raised to the category of a cathedral when that city became the centre of the diocese and in 1969 that of the archbishopric. It has the shape of a... More

If you have 150Kc in your pocket go visit the South Tower of this cathedral. I've been to many towers and this one is one of the best, especially if you're a bit scared of heights as I am! This tower feels safe and sturdy and will give you amazing 360 degrees views of Prague! :)

the cathedral is closed most of the time, except on sunday mornings (mass time) and for organised groups. you can see the exterior, which isn't all that mind boggling. once you actually manage to see the interior do remember: it's not allowed to take photos. for the life of me I can't understan why

This is very nice round jesuit s church with very special crucifiction. There exists story about card player who loosing begin to curse and throw stone to crucifiction. And from left part of Jesus leg blood begins to flow. The space of church is balanced, so you could seat there in calm without praying.

Not old, not new, not small but not big, interesting shape for a chathedral. If you're not interested in churches this is not a must see. However considerering how small Rijeka downtown is you will probably see the outside anyway.

The Cathedral, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, was founded in 1638 by Jesuits. It is a very distinctive building, in a round shape which was unusual for this part of Europe and with elements of gothic and baroque style. The interior is also very interesting with fine stained glass work. The pulpit is a very nice work... More
