About

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This cemetery contains a lot of history and beauty. It's one of the oldest in Medellin city and resting place for a lot of 19th century wealthy public figures. Filled wit lots of art, beauty, and of course death

This was a somber experience. Walking around the small cemetery and viewing the craftsmanship of the past. It is a quiet oasis inside a bustling city.

It is worth to walk among the elaborate graves in this cemetery. Local families have pride in keeping their graves clean and shining. No need to insist that you should show respect when visiting.

I find it interesting to visit local cemeteries throughout the world, to see how the living memorialize their dear ones, whose spirits have transitioned. You can experience this here, but also San Pedro Cemetery is known for its cultural events and tours of anthropology, history and architecture. The “Noche de Luna Llena,” takes place at night, during the full moon. This event consists of a nocturnal tour and a cultural presentation of dance or drama performed by local artists. The cemetery is located just a couple of blocks north of the Hospital Metro Station. There are many beautiful funerary monuments throughout the grounds here, made of Carrara marble, shipped in from Italy in the 1800’s. These statues and mausoleums are an integral part of the cultural and architectural heritage of Medellín. Construction of the cemetery began in 1842 and it was named a museum in 1998. Then, one year later, the cemetery itself was declared a National Monument. The chapel here wasn’t built until 1925 and it is lovely both outside and inside, where there are some very nice stained glass windows. This is definitely a place where the living continue to visit and pay respect to the memory of their loved ones, who are lying in rest at this cemetery. Funerals take place here daily and there are still plenty of spaces available for rent, for a four year period, and others for sale for permanent placement. There are flower venders immediately outside the entrance to the cemetery and so many beautiful flowers are available to place on the graves. I’ll include a photo of a flower stand, as well as some of the monuments in the cemetery that I saw today.
One thing that might interest you is another cemetery in Medellín. It’s near Comuna 13, where people go for the popular graffiti tour and electric stairs. This other cemetery is called Cementerio Parroquial La America and it’s located in the neighborhood of San Javier. What makes this other cemetery interestingly unique is that there is a lot of graffiti throughout the grounds, just as there is in nearby Comuna 13.

Easy location right across from "Hospital" metro stop. Fascinating to see the dates and ages on the graves and how they correspond to the events explained at Museo Casa de la Memoria. Fascinating to just wander around. We spent a little over an hour there.

Very cool! Walk among the monuments, and feel the respect for the dead. It appears that families spend a great deal of time there primping grave markers. The church is small compared to the grandeur of some of the dedications and tombs.

I suggest you go with a tour guide who can tell you all the stories there are to know about the many tumbs and sculptures. You sure will learn a lot about the history of both rich and poor people from Medellin. They often do some events at night which include stories and astronomy lessons.
