We also took a one hour boat tour on the lake around some of the islands but you don't really appreciate how beautiful the place is at eye level. Also as the commentary was only in Spanish we struggled to understand it.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 February 2024
- Courtney Y1 contributionBEST tour experience!!!I strongly recommend this tour!! I recently visited Medellín with friends & this was a very special day for our group. It’s hard to believe we only paid $35 USD for this incredible experience.. Our tour guide was Marlin, and he was attentive, fun & eager to share interesting facts about Guatape. Transportation was great. It’s about a two hour drive from Medellín, but we stopped for breakfast & lunch along our journey, which gave us plenty of time to relax and fully enjoy the experience. The places we stopped at for food were also excellent. The meals were delicious and overall, the environment/hospitality are incredible!Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 May 2024

The hotel was clean the service was great. Breakfast was delicious included each morning, at the front desk Juan was Excellent, just outside the hotel you can shop there is a beauty salon, barber shop, food court Italian restaurant, souvenir shopping and also you can get one hour massage for $35. American dollars can’t beat that. The wedding was at Le Celeste event facility in Rio Negro Tres Puertas it was the most extravagant wedding I have ever been to from the decor to the food and the entertainment definitely Wowed. It was not to far away. Was a beautiful green valley scenic route. We traveled Jet Blue so many flight delays & cancelation. Would recommend a different airline !!!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 June 2024

We truly loved every minute of our day trip to Guatape! The views from the top of the Giant rock are just breathtaking! Now, I highly recommend at least spending one night there, as our drive there took almost 3 hours there, and 3 hours back. The travel companies and locals might tell you 1 to 1h30, but that's impossible! There's only one road in, and one road out. Its almost impossible to pass, as the road is very winding, and up and down. We got held behind a large truck going around 20 miles and hour, which cost us a lot.
Now, once we reached Guatape, it was all worth it. The entrance to the Rock is roughly $5.50 (20,000COP), and they only accept cash. The hike takes roughly 20 minutes if you take your time, as the steps are steep and water runs through them. Once up there though, you quickly forget all about the ride and the hike, as the views are absolutely breathtaking!

From Medellin I hired a taxi to take me to Guatpe. It is normally about a two hour ride, but because this was on Sunday, there was a lot of traffic and it took almost 3 hours. The driver was very accommodating and for a small hourly fee waited in Guatape while I toured around.
I took a boat tour, and the scenery is amazing. The lagoon is truly a beautiful place, dotted with lovely homes, and few remnants of Pablo Escorbar.
The hour long excursion is well worth it.

This is a beautiful area. Take a boat ride on the man-made lake and learn some history of the area. Definitely climb the rock. It's only $7 (usd) and you go at your own pace. the view from the top is breaktaking. There are several good restaurants there too. It will be very crowded! The town of Guatape is really quaint and makes for a lovely walk. There isn't much else to do unless you are a shopper or want to get a bite to eat.

A great place!
Climbing the stone is a must when visiting Medellin.
I recommend staying one night so you can get to know the town and do one or two more activities that involve the town and/or the lake.
The views from the stones are spectacular.
I took a boat tour in the lagoon and they took us to see the flooded town of what was Perol, as well as famous houses and properties that belonged to Escobar.

About 90 minutes to 2 hours outside Medellin, these lakes are simply gorgeous. They are best seen frommon top of El Penol, the huge granite monolith just outside Guatape. They take the breath away.

This is a must! The best way to do it is a day tour from Medellin. Most tours do the same combining the Rock of Guatapé, El Peñol, or El Peñón de Guatapé, a visit to the town of Guatapé and a boat ride on Laguna Guatapé. Such a great day. The Rock is not that difficult to climb. Just take your time. I did it in twenty minutes at a reasonable pace stopping to rest and take in the views along the way up. Coming down was easier. The town of Guatapé is so colourful and pretty. Yes it is touristy but still nice. The boat ride on Laguna Guatapé is around fifty minutes and very relaxing with the scenery. It can get hot if you sit on the top deck. Our boat had music and you could purchase drinks too. We left Medellin around 07:00 in the morning and were back by 17:30. If you can, go on a Sunday as a lot of things are closed in Medellin on a Sunday and the town is pretty dead. Guatapé was buzzing!

My partner and I recently did guatape and La powers as a day trip from Medellin.
So basically what’s happened here is that around 3 months ago there was a landslide on the main road between marinilla and guatape. In traditional Colombian style they’ve ripped up the entire road and are trying to fix it. But this means the road is closed in both directions.
To get around the road block buses are either doing a giant detour through santuario and it’s adjacent muddy single lane mountain roads or are getting people to jump out, walk through the road block and get in a bus on the other side.
The wash up of all this is that it causes significant delays.
When we did it on the 6/12/2022 we left our hostel at 0800 and didn’t get to La piedra until 1315, with the bus trip taking 4 hours. Similar story back. In the end we lost so much time we were only able to hike La piedra and not continue onto guatape. We spent 9 hours travelling (including transfers to and from the bus station and waiting times for often late buses) and only 2 hours at the site itself.
I think until they fix the road don’t bother trying to attempt this independently. It might be better as a tour given that they sort out logistics and you don’t waste your time waiting on buses but be ready to spend a lot of time on the road.
