SERVICE: I don´t know why so many people complain about the service.... I was very satisfied with the staff, especially David from reception is a super helpful, patient and polite guy who helped with every question I had (speaks very good english)
FOOD: Not high class, but absolutely ok. I am vegetarian and for each meal I got a veggie soup and an extra little side dish like cooked eggplants, fried zuccinis, mushrooms, etc. Plus they have a really great variety of salads (one of the bests I have seen in Colombia) and you can go to the buffet a second time and get more :-)
ROOMS: I was super happy with my room. I stayed in the El refugio, which I can absolutely recommand to people who don`t mind having a few little animals like insects or bugs in the room. After dinner, I loved sitting at the "open" = no window and listening to the sounds of the nature, reading a book at candle light and then falling asleep. I had no towels in the room, I asked the housekeeping ladies and I got them. At the entrance I was able to pick my room (I didn`t have a reservation), the lady showed me a map and all possibilities including rates. I chose a room at the very end (casa 1, room 9). I wanted to be as far away as possible from the restaurant and acitvity area. I didn't mind the 10 minute walk from the restaurant and the stairs at all. I paid 140.000 COP, which after all, is an acceptable price for a room with a very great view, private bathroom, all meals included.
ACTIVITIES (in my opinion, rates are quite cheap for what you get): I did the cave, which was very intersting and exciting. Be prepared to get wet. You will have to swim at some parts. And bring a flashlight, it is dark!
I skipped the rafting, it looked quiet boring, the river is slow and not very deep. I did rafting and canyoning in Europe (I think this can not be compared).
Instead I rented a tube and walked up the river for about an hour and then I enjoyed a quiet and relaxing 1,5 hour ride with sounds of birds :-), I absolutely loved it!
--> I went directly after breakfast before the day visitors arrive and my 2 companions and I had the river almost to ourselves.
I skipped Ziplining as well. Much better and longer lines f.ex. in Costa Rica
WHAT ELSE: I took the bus from Guatape to Rio Claro. You don't have to go back all the way to Medellin. Take the bus direction Medellin (leaves Guatape at least every hour) and change to one of the big buses in Marinilla. On the road from Medellin to Bogota (road 60) there is a small bus terminal with 3 offices (one is Coonorte) where you can buy your ticket (20.000 COP). From there it takes about 2 hours. Tell the driver to stop at reserva natural rio claro. Do not forget to mention the complete name, otherwise they might let you out further on the street and you have to walk back....
I left my big backpack at the check-in office at the entrance and just took my small one with things for 2 nights (you don't need much, its warm all the time. In case you have forgotten something you can always go back, its only 15 minutes from the restaurant). In total it is about half an hour to walk to the rooms of El Refugio, so I wouldn't want to carry all my stuff there....
AVOID weekends and puentes! I think it can get really crowded with Colombians from Medellin with kids. I was there Monday to Wednesday and there were not many people.
The bus to Bogota took a lot more than 5 hours.... 7,5 hour...the road is ok, but only one lane and a lot of big and slow trucks plus some road construction....usual colombian problem....
AFTER ALL: I loved this place! It is great to have a few days very close to nature, birds, swim (the river has just the right temperature), relax, read, walk along the river (the further you go the less people you meet, at the end we were all by ourselves, sooo peaceful), enjoy the sounds of the woods, no WIFI....

We went to "Reserva Natural Canon de Rio Claro" (Rio Claro Canyon Natural Reserve) last month. It was a last minute decision but we were glad we did.
To be honest, this is only recommended for adventurous people who love nature and are looking for something off the beaten track.
It is a 3-4hr trip from Medellin's North terminal or Terminal del Norte. The bus ticket cost $22.000 COP. Before we went we were told it was a 3 hour journey but the truth is that we left 10 mins delayed and the bus stopped many times, including a snack/toilet stop the driver made half way. So it was a 4hour journey for us.
You have to tell the driver you are going to Rio Claro and they will drop you off at the main entrance.
Keep in mind that this is a natural reserve and you will have to walk 1km (about 15 to 20 mins) from the entrance to get to the main building, where the reception and activities desk and the restaurant are located.
They offer you 5 different accommodation options. We decided to stay at "Cabanas La Mulata" which are located about 5-10 mins before getting to the main building. We still have to do the check in there though (accommodation fee includes 3 meals).
This is tropical rain forest so it is pretty hot and humid during the day and cool at night and there are some seasons when it rains a lot.
Torch, towel, insect repellent, trekking shoes and water shoes (or trainers that can get wet) are a must!
They offer different activities (water rafting, canopi, jungle trekking, cave exploring).
We really enjoyed our stay even when the food wasn't great but was it was acceptable.
If you stay somewhere different to the rooms located in the main building, you will have to walk three times a day to get your meals at the restaurant located in the main building and remember it might be raining and there are no lights on the road and at night is pitch black!
Also, as it is in the middle of the jungle, it was difficult for me to fall asleep the first couple of nights because there are so many sounds in the jungle that it scared me a little bit.
But it was a unique experience.
We absolutely recommend it.

This is a stunning natural reservation and a must see if you are in town and of course if you are looking to spend some time in the middle of nature and out of the city and its normal rhythm. The facilities are simple but very well kept, the river is absolutely beautiful but gotta be careful since its really strong. This is Colombia so everything is under your risk.. there are no life guards or anything, if you drown you drown..so don't be stupid! We went to the cave and it is absolutely amazing!! just make sure you are in shape to hike through the forest for 1 hr, cross the river fully dressed (shoes and pants strongly recommended) and then walk though the cave for 40 min.. the cave has a stream of water that goes back to the river.. you gotta swim and jump into wells.. slide through the rocks etc... they don't speak English and don't do a good job describing the adventure with all it takes.. so make sure you are in shape and are willing to go for it, once you cross the river there's no going back!
If you prefer to be with small groups definitely avoid weekends!

the place is beautiful and activities are good. nevertheless, don't go there for bird watching activity it doesn't exist in the hotel. a SHAME , why don't they take it off their website ?!!!!!
the staff is very unpleasant starting from the booking in Medelin (incompetent) to the hotel . I don't think some staff should work in hospitality !!!
the cleaning ladies and security are nice and helpful .
Here nature is beautiful and it would really deserve a better service.

We were travelling in Colombia on a birding trip with Ecoturs. Rio Clara was included in our trip, because there is a cave on the opposite bank with Oilbirds, which fly out at dusk. In fact, there is a site close by where you can see Oilbirds in a large cave during the day, so there is no need to stay at Rio Claro from a birding point of view. When you enter the lodge, you drive some way to the main building where the restaurant is situated. The lodge is situated right next to to a fast running river, which did all look very beautiful. We were allocated a room in one of the new buildings, which was a 15 minute walk from the main building along an uneven path. At no time did the lodge advertise this. We could have packed a light backpack if we had known, but had no idea until we got there. We were told that we would get help with bags, but this did not materialise. I think it completely unacceptable for rooms to be 15 minutes walk away, without there being any help with bags. When we reached the room, we found it to be basic. Our building was one of a few buildings and looked like it had not been finished. There was a large window across the whole of the wall overlooking the river, but with no glass in it. The bathroom also had a large window, again with no glass. The bedroom and bathroom did not have a ceiling across them, so were exposed to the elements around the top of the room. This meant that as soon as it was dark (it was dark when we got to our room) and you put the light on, the room and bathroom filled with large flying objects. We were there with our 11 year old daughter, who was crying during her shower because of the number of large insects flying and hitting her. Even with the light off, there were very large insects sitting directly above you in bed. This did not make comfortable sleeping and in the end my daughter and I slept half way down the bed with a blanket over our heads, to avoid falling insects. When we went to have our evening meal, we had a young waitress who was more interested in chatting to the other young travellers than serving us. Due to this terrible service, our meal took a very long time to come and for us to leave. The food itself was ok. On the day we were leaving, we waited 30 minutes for help with our bags and eventually a couple of boys carried them back for us, but under duress. I am giving this place a 1* and would give them a -5* if I could. I think that the night we spent there was one of the most uncomfortable in my life. The rooms need to be completed with windows and ceilings with proper staff available to carry bags. They also need to sack their your transient staff and get in people who are actually interested in serving people.

This should be a tranquil experience, but walking in to the reserve centre there are cars and motorbikes racing by constantly. There appears to be no management supervision whole place is in absolute chaos. This place is simply a money making exercise with NO consideration for customer service or for providing a quality experience. The staff are just not interested.

We stayed here for 3 nights and to be honest wish we hadn’t bothered.
The price for Colombia is extortionist the food which is included is average at best. The activities are not worth your time or money.
The rafting is nothing more than a lazy drift along the river which virtually no wildlife to be seen. I have seen larger “rapids” in a bath.
The caving wasn’t great, the poor birds get very upset the entire time you are there. You spent the time in knee deep water banging your knees on unknown rocks and falling over.
The accommodation as mentioned is overpriced. The walls are paper thin meaning you can hear EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING. From couples enjoying intimate relations to bowel movements from your neighbours. Being woken up to loud music to being able to join in conversations with your neighbours.
The views are not worth the price you pay personally.
Don’t even think about staying in the Hotel across the road. We were kept up by jack hammering from 9pm to 6am. There is no mention of this on the website and to be honest the bookings information are pretty poor.
With the activities available at the reserve none of the staff have eve first aid training. My girlfriend feel on the caving and before even assessing her leg and ankle they proceeded to twist and turn her leg which may have suffered a break. Thankfully I was able to intervene before further damage was done with my first air training. So just hope you don’t get injured or they may do further damage.
I would highly recommend skipping this tourist trap. If you do want to go to crystal clear water dive under waterfalls and swim in clear lagoons I would highly highly recommend Piedra Montada it is a beautiful little oasis about 30 mins mototaxi from Guatape. It’s quiet and just gorgeous and not over priced.

Its one of the most beautiful places you will ever sleep. The View is brilliant. Sound is like jungle in its purest form and its romantic as hell. Moonshine and open view right into the djungle and nobody will see you up there. The river and the surrounding is inviting you to stay there for more days than you will have booked there. =)

To be honest, during my whole trip over Colombia the service of this place really sucks, i mean, you can find nice and helpful people in the majority places of Colombia, BUT THIS, is the WORST...
i spend one week trying to get and answer for a reservation, also called several times to land line and cell phone but NO Answer... one time they just said me that they were busy on a meeting ... ! WTF ???
Finally i receive the information to make the reservation, which consist in make a deposit of the 100% of the payment. THEY DONT RECEIVE CREDIT CARD - ONLY CASH, THEY LOVE CASH and dont get you any kind of receipt, THEY love No pay TAXES.. so if you dont like after you see what is real, sorry for you...
you are booking with no real pictures of the rooms...
i was booking about 10 rooms for my friends and me... but they just treat you like Mc donalds customer.... i just hate the manner of how they spoke to you... Diana is the name of her..!
finally we arrive there...
*FOOD is disgusting, they include in the price, YOU ARE TRAPPED, no options for decent food or Veggies
* No body speak a word of English...
* The facilities are manage by 3 women (teenagers) who dont care anything to help you with information or just make you easy the process of book the activities or get your keys for the rooms... and YOU have to give 15USD for deposit for each room... which make no sense.. almost pay with my girlfriend 100 USD per night...
* Activities just suck..Zip line ! no way, just boring.
* the guides really try to help you... and you can understand why... they are nice, but they just get paid for 10 hours 7 USD, meanwhile they receive TONS of cash, and treat their people like Slaves.
THE PLACE, is Awesome, IS PURE NATURE, the marble river, the rain forest....really deserve to visit, BUT DONT STAY THERE, DONT EAT THERE, there are some options close, with beautiful facilities and super SERVICE.
Go for the DAY, bring your own quality snacks and TIP the guides please :)
RIO CLARO owners, LOVE to enslave their Guides :(

I had read about the Río Claro El Refugio Nature Reserve and thought it would be a good place to experience some tropical rainforest while also breaking up the bus trip from Medellin to Bogota. It turned out to be all that and more.
In order to make a reservation, I had to telephone someone (I think in Bogota) and speak to them in Spanish; couldn't see a way to do it online. But the reservation worked.
It was also easy to find a bus in the Medellin bus station that supposedly would take us to Rio Claro. Tickets for two cost just 48,000 pesos (about $16). Before boarding, we pointed out to the assistant bus driver that we were going to Rio Claro. But he forgot, and so the bus drove right by our stop. Fortunately, when it stopped in Doradal (the next town up the road), I asked when we would arrive in Rio Claro. We were able to get off and hire a driver to take us back to where we should have gotten off. To avoid making a similar mistake, I would start banging on the driver's compartment and reminding him maybe 2 or 2.5 hours after leaving Medellin (it's about a 3-hour drive from there.)
We had Cabana #4 -- one of the highest corner rooms. It's a hike (almost a mile?) to the cabanas from the main road. But the room was splendid -- with views of the river far below and breathtaking vistas of the canyon. And we did have a working mosquito net, which was a comfort.
The food was decent, and the activities that we did (zip-lining and rafting) were a blast. Despite the challenge of getting there, we were delighted to have included this in our Colombian itinerary.

Does the bus that goes from medellin to bogota ( passing rio claro) go anywhere near the airport or do i have to go into medellin abd back out again?
Written 9 July 2023
Hi, this place looks amazing and I've gotten a lot of perspective from the reviews and Q+A.
My question is about gay tolerance. I've been with my Colombian boyfriend around Medellin before and felt comfortable. I'm returning to visit him and want to make Rio Claro part of the trip. We're not particularly "flamboyant" nor am I interested in special treatment and affirmation, but I think it would be obvious to observers that we are there as a couple, so I'd just need to know the environment is at least neutral/accepting to an openly gay couple.
The park looks like a laid back place for all kinds of people, I could just use some extra insight. Thanks!

Hey! planning an upcoming trip to colombia-- trying to fit in what I can.
looking at staying 2 nights in jardin then heading to rio claro reserva for a night then back to medellin.
does anyone know how long it would take to go from jardin to rio claro? is there a bus? or should we just plan on medellin to rio claro and cut out a night at jardin

¿Me dirás cómo es la Caverna? ¿Tengo la fuerza y la escalada? es muy exigente? ¿Estás caminando sobre los zapatos en el agua de neopreno o bien abierto con los pulgares? Esta es la cueva de trekking pesado? Gracias :)

Couples questions:
1) Do you need hiking boots for the trails - or are tennis shoes/sneakers ok?
2) How far is the walk from the bus stop to the lodge(s)?
3) Do they have guides or are all the trails self-guided? If self-guided, how early in the morning are the trails open?
4) With the open air rooms, do they have mosquito tents? Of do you just douse yourself with DEET?
Thank you
