- Lamaar A2 contributionsCartagena, mi amor! All of Cartagena was simply amazing. I'm already trying to decide when I want to return. The people are friendly, the views are scenic and Cartagena boasts some of the best food in the world! My friends and I stayed about a 7 minute drive away from Old City in a condo airbnb but made our way to Old City every day for sightseeing, dinner and nightlife activities. I love Cartagena and will be back!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 October 2023

- Sushi N ScottSouth Riding, Virginia872 contributionsWonderfulThe walled city of Cartagena is filled with interesting tourist shops, historic statues and building and wonderful restaurants. It reminded me of a Spanish city. Great place to wander around and we felt very safe especially during the day. .Visited November 2023Written 27 November 2023
- rainylorCalgary, Canada30 contributionsAmazing neighborhood with great architecture and history. Amazing art work all throughout.I would recommend a walking tour first so you know a little about the history and places you would like to revisit. Great place to see during the day and night. If you go early in the morning there are not as many people. At night it is a very vibrant neighborhood with music and people everywhere.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 December 2023
- Sholas007New Orleans, Louisiana146 contributionsI was in New Orleans Dubbed in SpanishThere are tons of reasons I love the Walled City of Cartagena. The buildings are brightly colored and vibrant. There are fascinating squares full of art and history. The street art, sculptures and architecture are stunning and accessible. There are many catholic churches that host mass. And, there are tons or street vendors, street performers and enchantments to see. The restaurants are very tasty and many have live music. There is ample local shopping for clothes, jewelry, gifts and souvenirs. Because the city is old, the sidewalks are narrow and the streets are narrow. If one is a wheelchair user, navigating the city is possible but one would need to be intentional. There is also some episodic back ups in the drainage system at some intersections during high tide. The local officials clean them up quickly and sanitize if needed, but do not wade in that water! I am not a carriage rider, but there are dozens of mule-drawn carriages to tour the city. There are also bike and walking tours for those that want a guided experience. However, with a good smart phone and a city map/attractions listing, one can do it on their own.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2024
- baggiemickStourbridge, United Kingdom91 contributionsClassical Spanish architectureA very beautiful city with fantastic old Spanish architecture. Excellent choice of bars and shops all be it touristic. It felt very safe. A must if your cruise docks there. Plenty of venders in the port so save yourself the costly cruise company prices.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 January 2024
- JetSetterSteveWest Chester, Pennsylvania347 contributionsAn authentic Colombian experience coupled with reasonable safety, highly recommendDefinitely a foodie and festival place. There are so many nooks and crannies to be investigated. Every restaurant has its own theme and the people are welcoming. Avoid the groups of boys who may be aggressive wanting to perform for you, nothing is for free, if you engage them then they will expect something from you. It is very safe inside the walls but pickpocket must be a thing here. We didn't personally experience it but we were warned.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 February 2024
- MJCH_englandLondon, United Kingdom12 contributionsBeautiful and Romantic CityTry and stay within the city walls as it makes getting around so much easier. Although there are lots of yellow cabs they are not metered so you will need to negotiate a rate. They will often hoot as they go by you so if needed they can be flagged down. If staying in Bocagrande it is a bit of a trek to the walled city so you will probably need a taxi. If visiting the beach at Bocagrande make sure you agree a price for a beer before sitting down at a beach bar as they will try and rip you off and charge you up to COP 25,000 a bottle. Also be aware that on that public beach you will be approached by women offering massages. In the walled city visit the very interesting Naval Museum (across the road from the Charleston Hotel) although like most of the museums, most of the descriptions on exhibits are in Spanish. The Gold museum is worth a visit - though very small compared to the one in Bogota.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 February 2024
- Jake TOntario, Canada27 contributionsGreatIt's a pleasant walk across the tops of the walls surrounding the city. It's flat with mild incline. Would make a great place for an early morning run! There will be hawkers at night trying to sell you trinkets or booze.Visited January 2024Written 4 February 2024
- Travelaround59London, United Kingdom2,032 contributionsA wonderful place indeedNow I was blown away from the Walled City…amazing doesn’t describe enough! Starting from the buildings and the churches (all very imposing) and the terraced gardens (full of flowers and greenery) but then is the shops and restaurants (all very chic indeed) but more than anything else I would say the music and the life that appear behind any corner and the buskers and anything else that makes Cartagena so vibrant! I will come back no matter whatVisited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 February 2024

The walled city of Cartagena is a nonnegotiable place to explore and spend quality time when visiting the city as a whole. It’s iconic, colorful, rich, and full of the most fascinating history you could imagine. See my pictures to understand how truly beautiful this quarter of the city is.
Note: you’ll find plenty of salespeople in the area, especially by the clock tower entrance into the walled city, who will strongly urge and beg you to let them give you tours and sell you souvenirs. I must say two things here: as far as tours go, there are actually free tour options in the walled city. Hear me out: some tours require no payment. So basically anyone who offers you a guided tour for any price, even for 100 pesos or whatever, is ripping you off. Try the free tours and at least see how you like them! Secondly, as far as the souvenirs, feel free to firmly decline their sale offers. I am still very inexperienced with price negotiating, so I decided to just refuse all the offers without arguing any lower prices. Your choice either way, depending on your comfort levels.
I hope this review encourages you further to visit the walled city! It is, again, a MUST in Cartagena. Enjoy your time!!!

We came here by boat on a cruise ship stop. The streets have many historic Spanish style buildings with little parks and large squares. It is a bit hard to find things. Even with a map, it was a maze and difficult to find what you wanted, even though the area wasn’t that large. Every inch of the way, we were hounded by vendors trying to relentlessly sell us things. It did take away from the experience. Sadly we missed the church of St Catherine as it closed early for Mass. Near St Pedro Claver church, you can climb the city walls for a view of the harbor. There are a number of very interesting museums here and a noticeable Spanish influence. We can’t speak any Spanish but managed to find our way with our map. We brought the local currency but vendors seemed to prefer American dollars. I didn’t feel threatened or unsafe as the vendors were extremely annoying but not scary, just trying to make a buck. Ladies with fruit on their heads were everywhere. I was warned by someone who lived there not to eat any of the fruit being sold on the streets.

Must see destination. My son and I went to Cartagena in December. It was hot so during the day wear sunscreen, a hat and comfortable clothes. We did a free walking tour which is recommended as it is possible to see all of the walled city on foot if you have a reasonable level of fitness. Take lots of water, fluids because the sun is HOT. We also hired bikes and did a self guided cycling tour but I would not recommend Cartagena as a cycling destination. The footpaths on the waterfront are full of gaps and liable to have holes or objects whjch are cycling hazards. In other words, you have to stop often and haul your bike over gaps, h and hazards on the footpath. The road on the waterfront is very busy with traffic and not a safe place to be riding a bike (as opposed to inside the walled city where everyone walks around all day and night without problem) . That said, it is possible to ride a bike a few kilometers around inside the walled city because pedestrians have free reign. At night, try any of the many excellent restuarants and bars. Cuba 1940 is great if you like latin music but get there after 9 pm.

We were just in town for a short day on the Celebrity Reflection. Shared a cab with another couple for $20 total. Got into town around 8:00 and found most everything closed. However, early morning is a great time to explore the city and it’s colorful colonial architecture. Many of the nicer shops open between 9:00-10:00. It’s only a $10 cab ride back to ship

This walking tour was our Princess cruise excursion for Cartagena. Our tour guide Ezra gave us an excellent tour. He was very knowledgeable of the area and its history. We saw much of the old or colonial part of Cartagena. The streets are very narrow and crowded with tourist and local traffic. There were two cruise ships on the day that we visited. The colonial homes were quite beautiful with the upper balconies festooned with colorful flowers and plants. Most home entrance doors are quite elaborate. It all makes for a photographers paradise. Even if you are not a photographer it is beautiful to see. We toured in early March and it was a hot and humid day. This was a morning tour too. The one thing we did not like was the many, many vendors getting right in your face and pushing their wares. I realize these people need to make a living but it would have been a much nicer experience without all the hustlers.

Been to Cartagena a couple of times, each time is never enough.
Touring the City with the kids during the day is best and having someone to watch them so you can enjoy the night time fun is better. As expected things will be pricey because it is a tourist destination, very cultural.

We took a taxi from the cruise ship port to the Old City and our taxi driver stayed with us and acted as a tour “guide” for us for about 3 hours as we walked around the Old City streets. His English was pretty limited so we didn’t get too much information but enough to get by. Be prepared to be inundated by street vendors as you walk around the Old City streets so you have to have a strategy to avoid buying too much.Basically say no thanks and keep on walking. Wonderful history in this part of town and we visited several old cathedrals and churches. It is a very picturesque part of the city and lots to see if you have the time.

Arrived via cruise ship. Asked the taxi driver to take us to the Clock Tower main entrance but he took us to the opposite side to "Ava's Emerald Jewelry" store. He insisted we could get a "deal" there and they would also arrange for him to return us to our ship. Needless to say, we didn't return there. We should have insisted on being dropped off where we asked in the first place. Don't pay more than $10 for a Panama hat. Everything is negotiable. We didn't encounter any begging but vendors wanting to sell items. A firm "no, gracias" is all that was needed. I was not tempted to buy emerald jewelry. It was very expensive even in silver settings. I only looked at a few pieces out of curiosity. You really need to do your homework first if you are interested in emeralds. The walled city is beautiful but be cautious about being manipulated by taxi drivers and others. Wish we had had more time to spend in museums, etc.

You only need a couple of days in the walled city. You will be inundated with people and will be walking among the throngs in 95 degree weather. So drink plenty of water all day and bring shoes that can navigate very old streets that are in need of fixing. There are lots of luxury hotels but we stayed at a wonderful small boutique hotel called Casa del Arzobispado. It only has ten rooms and is in the heart of Cartagena. It's worth visiting the walled city but it's also a cacophony of vendors, horse drawn carriages, musicians, taxis and others trying to share some very small streets. So plan to visit the sites and maybe get out to one of the beaches, if possible.

Fascinating place to explore. The parks are nice to sit and rest. Narrow streets, buildings with balconies and large wooden doors with ornate handles shaped like various animals. Went to the chocolate museum, which was small, but interesting. Stopped by the cevicheria, but waited for 45 minutes and still wasn't seated, so left. The waits at the restaurants were all long (over an hour) . There were some aggressive street vendors and also a group of teenagers who surrounded me and started rapping, expecting payment. As a solo traveler, I noticed someone following me and that person eventually tried to sell me drugs. When I wanted to leave, I asked for directions and this local told me he didn't know where St. Teresa's Convent was- a major landmark. However, most people I met were friendly and helpful. A fascinating place to explore. If you're traveling solo, be aware of your surroundings, of who approaches you and comes within close proximity of you.

Is it easy to get a taxi or uber from the walled city? How are the mosquitoes in November?
Written 10 November 2019
Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive, but you must negotiate a price before getting in. There are no meters and they will charge you twice as much if you don’t negotiate. Ubers are illegal. Few mosquitoes because of the sea breeze.

Hi, my wife and I are arriving at Cartagena in November via Princess cruise. The ship docks from 7am to 3pm. We plan to visit Old City, Fortress, and La Popa by taking local taxi. A couple of questions:
1) Which place we should head out first then next?
2) Does taxi takes USD? I assume they will speak English? How much is a typical taxi fare?
3) I believe La Popa and Fortress I need to pay admission fees. Do they take USD?
Thanks

I don't know the cost of taxis from the cruise ship dock, but I was able to use Uber in Cartagena. The rides were affordable and efficient. And, with Uber, language isn't an issue! I didn't visit La Popa, but did go to the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas Fortess. There is a fee payable by credit card or local currency. Frankly, unless you have a strong interest in seeing it, you may want to skip it. The views are nice, but there isn’t much to see at the site, there’s no shade and it's quite a climb. Instead, consider spending your limited time seeing all parts of the gorgeous walled city, allowing time to take a few drink breaks from the heat.
