Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Everyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the REAL Cartagena should take a tour on Bazurto!
The matket is a most vibrant and absolutely fascinating place of local culture.
Go with @eldannystark („Mercado, la veradera Cartagena“ on AirBnB): Danny will show you its hidden treasures, take you to his favorite places and catch your attention with his very personal storytelling. I recommend this tour 100% - music, art, culture and fantastic good, what else could you wish for!

No words can describe one's first time experience at the Market. The bottom line is that it was eye opening and all that has been written about it is really true. If you are in the snob category, this ain't the place for you. It you are in the somewhat curious to see a lot category, go there. Recommend to go with a guide who knows how to traverse the market and how to communicate with the vendors. We found it safe throughout our personal tour. Take plenty of pictures on the mood, as that will be the only way to describe it to your friends. What an experience!!!!!

My husband and I booked a tour of the market with Daniel through AirBnB experiences. Truly an impactful experience, and something that wouldn’t have been as meaningful (or easy) without a guide. Daniel has a passion for the real Cartagena. A highlight was receiving a custom poster made by Runner, a Cartagena icon famous for creating posters for champeta events around the city. Highly recommend going but book with someone who knows the area!

Yes, it is smelly, crowded and dirty. It is also a great experience. We went with a guide who helped us figure out the kinds of fish, the dishes, and to navigate the maze. There were a few dark alleys i wouldn't have taken without him. We felt very safe, nobody tried to aggressively sell us anything, or approached us in some threatening way. I personally wouldn't eat there, but lots of people were. I think you need to be resistant to the local bacteria to do it safely. Very crowded in the morning, much less happening in the afternoon, but you see the locals relaxing with their friends and drinking a beer and dancing after a hard day of work.

We simply cannot say enough about our fabulous experience with Kate as our guide today. She was extremely knowledgeable about the history and important facts about the market. We had a lot of laughs learning to dance to champeta music. Kate knows so many people and everyone wants to give her a hug. We met artisans, a DJ, metal workers and fruit vendors. This is truly a memorable experience as well as an amazing way to learn about a culture.

Avoid this place!!!! This is an extremely dangerous and filthy place. It is clogged with locals selling products, food, and produce. I've been to local markets around the world, but this is the worst. It smells terrible -- like a sewer pit. I would not buy anything food here whatsoever for fear of contamination. There was even a dog hit by a motorbike, laying by a booth dripping in blood out of his mouth with no concern by others.

I usually love local markets, however this is one you can skip. If you really want to go, grab a taxi for 8000-10000 peso. Do not pay 50 dollars for a tour. This market is a total disappointment. Don't wear open toed shoes, bring a mask as the smell is bad.

Its a maze of mostly what you can find in a dollar store.

This is an aggressive Latin American market. Nothing tourist about. Amazing sights and smells. Wear good shoes because it’s a mess and leave jewelry at home. Never felt in danger but it is crowded in some places and you don’t want to lose something important to a pick pocket. People are so nice, posing for pictures and offering tastes.

We visited the mercado on our own and enjoyed a lot. Its busy, lively and sometimes a bit smelly. Its huge, but getting (a bit) lost is part of the fun. We felt perfectly safe. Friendly atmosphere and no harassment at all. Watch your belongings though. Having been an many markets in Asia, Africa and South America, we were not surprised at all and enjoyed our "self guided" tour. Came out with plenty fresh fruits.

This market is chaotic, vibrant and fantastic. It’s an authentic local market, not the choreographed tourist experience that the old city is. Well worth exploring, especially if you suspend your judgement at the door. Plenty to see, experience and buy. It’s helpful to have somebody show you the routes; but the market if very accessible and we found vendors engaging and easy to engage with. It’s a great way to try a load of local fruits too.
