- dyhx6,184 contributionsYou've not been to Chengdu if you didn't go hereStarted with the Kindergarden zone where the famous 花花 (荷花) and her less famous bro 荷叶 lives. 花花 shot to fame after a video of her went viral on Douyin and since then hoards of citizens / local tourists queue for hours to take photos/videos of her. Apparently any video of her is guaranteed viewership/interactions on social media. The queue on a non-peak day like today was 2.5 hrs, crazy. Follow the path to see the baby pandas at the Sun and Moon Delivery Houses (太阳/月亮产房). End the walk at the Red Panda (小熊猫) enclosure. These are not pandas per se, their faces look a little like them, with black patches round the eyes, but they are smaller in size, with long tails and move faster than a normal panda. They live together with pandas in the wild, a distant cousin of sorts. Fall-Winter are the best seasons to visit. Being the preferred weather by the pandas, they are more active, hence we have more to see too. Go in the morning too, as they tend to laze around after they've had their fill of bamboo.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 October 2023
- Narendra GChengdu, China114 contributionsAn amazing panda experience. This is an awesome experience visiting the panda sanctuary. Being a week day, it was packed with tons of people. The queues were crazy at some places. If you spend an additional 30 Yuan and visit the new section, it's absolutely awesome. Less crowded and better for viewing the pandabears. Loads of family fun when visiting. A must visit when in Chengdu.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 November 2023
- ClaireLouiseDerbyshire, United Kingdom327 contributionsHuge place, very well organised and well cared for Pandas. 100% recommendWe visited on an overnight stop over in Chengdu. The place was easy to get to by metro (getting off at panda ave) then caught a tourist bus for 2CNY to the entrance . Very well organised. Reasonable entrance fee (ticket brought in advance online). Although busy we did get to see many Pandas and took many photos. The place was huge. We walked through from the south to west entrance. I 100% recommend.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023

I do highly recommend you go straight to the new Sun Hills Area because there are around 8 panda in each enclosure and you can view them from the cafe as well. Away from the crowd.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 November 2023

I am a big fan of the small Pandas and they run around everywhere. Not sure if it is still possible, but like 15 years ago you even could do an internship here Pandas are just amazing! - NatzLondon, United Kingdom70 contributionsAmazing placeAbsolutely recommend a visit and a must do while in China. The Panda's are well cared for, obviously very happy and have a huge amount of space to wonder around, play and eat. 1000% better than the panda's in Beijing zoo. Have to visit in the morning as this is when they are most active. We were told by our guide it is better when cooler as the panda's prefer it to heat.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2024

- Pioneer545726Coventry, United Kingdom38 contributionsA fantastic experienceThis was a great morning out! We saw so many pandas!!! We arrived by taxi from our hotel just after 8am. We booked our tickets through Travel China - we just needed our passports to get in. There were no queues - we went straight in. The research base is wonderful - it is huge and you can soon find space away from larger groups! The panda enclosures are spacious and well managed. We saw lots of giant pandas and red pandas too! It is best to go in the morning when the pandas are eating and active. There are lots of places to eat and some lovely souvenirs to purchase. Overall, a fantastic experience! It is easy to travel back into the city by bus and subway.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2024
- Christian MCopenhagen, Denmark5,962 contributionsYou Cannot Beat the Crowds - But Here’s a Tip That Can Save You Almost 1 HourThe Panda Park opens at 7:30 am, and we were ready, hoping to avoid the massive queue when the big tourist buses unload their hordes. In vain. Ahead of us, at least 1000 people had already been waiting in line for a long time, so we had to patiently wait to get in. There was so much pressure at the entrance that the staff didn't even bother to check our passports, which served as our tickets. We could have entered for free if we hadn’t bought tickets in advance. Once inside, you can choose to stand in another huge queue called something like 'single cycle loop.' Don’t do it!! The line moves incredibly slowly past some so-called ‘villas’ with a few pandas. It takes about an hour to get through, and our photos were not worth keeping. Instead, go on your own and follow the signs pointing to ‘villa 1,’ ‘villa 2’… ‘villa 7.’ Each of these outdoor ‘villas’ has an adorable panda that you can take great photos of. You’re in for a treat!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024

We had only two hours to spend at the breeding centre which was really not enough time. The area is huge and beautiful to walk around. The enclosures for the pandas are divided into an adult area, a juvenile section and then the breeding centre with the tiny babies.
We were told that the adults were not very active, and for the most part this was true. However on adult male spent quite a bit of time walking about his enclosure, and climbing up onto the 'sleeping rock', then down and once more around the enclosure, passing by all the delighted onlookers. I have some amazing photos of this panda.
We next visited the juvenile area where the pandas were indeed more active, and it was lots of fun to watch them interact with each other and their environment.
As we walked to the building where the tiny babies were kept, we saw some out door enclosures were all the pandas were hight up in the tree branches. This was fun as they looked so natural climbing about in the trees - and more great photos.
Our last formal visit was to the breeding centre building. There was a great deal of information on the breeding program and many photos of the baby pandas, but we didn't get to see any of the babies. We then had free time to wander about the whole sight. The grounds are wonderful, and included paths, fountains, trees and many flowers about the outdoor enclosures. We saw some of the smaller brown and black and white relatives to the Giant Pandas. They are much more active and moved about their enclosure quite quickly.
My husband and I love to learn about history and geography and nature so we read every sign and information board that we found. This means that it took us longer to get around the centre so perhaps two hours, while short for us, is enough time for more casual observers. We really enjoyed our tour to the Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre, which would have been perfect if we could have seen some baby pandas.

We went on this tour today and had a great experience. Our tour guide, Hayley, was very knowledgeable and fun to talk to. She expertly guided us through the park and helped us get the best pictures possible all while sharing a lot of information about the pandas and expertly answering all our questions. Highly recommend!

Go early we arrived at 7:10am, start queuing until 7:30am when the gates open, foreigners need their passport, foreigners buy the ticket onsite just outside the gate (queue first) once in take the golf kart to the first stop 10(rmb) To see the pandas outside temp needs to be below 20° so try and choose a colder day if possible. The baby pandas are viable at 10:30am there was only one on the day we are there, born 1.5 months ago, in my opinion not worth waiting. On the day we went there are lot of pandas to be seen out eating, moving slowly and sleeping. I recommend it, allow 2-3 hours

We went in June, after the Dragon Boat Festival. While our expectation first was lowered when we saw the outside of the location and expected it to less urban, we quickly understood that in the beginning, Chengdu city was of course far away but with the growth the urban dwelling grew closer. Anyway, after quickly buying the tickets at the counter without a queue we entered the center and walked up following the good signage. We loved it. Various sites, no too many people (when in China, there are always people) and a lot of pandas. The several big pits with lots of trees, plants and constructions for the animals to play and be entertained were in good condition and all had signage to state name, age and personality of the panda shown. The area for the red pandas (smaller) was more a walk-through with many animals running around or sleeping in the trees. We were lucky enough to be there at feeding times for both species. Plus the weather was very agreeable for both, animals and humans. A little rain did not matter. Overall, for the little entrance fee of 55 RMB per person, we couldn't expect more. A great 4 hours with lots of walking (!) and active giant and red pandas. It is recommended to
1. Come early and avoid weekends and holidays if possible, 2. Chinese citizens can book tickets online, foreigners cannot. 3. Foreigners need to show passport and at best the entrance date to China, or at least have it memorised. 4. Have good shoes for walking and rather a rain jacket than an umbrella. We got there with a private driver. Since I speak Chinese, all communication was easy and very polite. The venue has lots of restrooms and you can buy snacks and water but can bring it as well on your own. Not sure if you still can book to get close to a panda or even touch it. But was not of importance to us.
We went the next day to another giant panda station, at Wulong. Different experience but can there ever be sufficient panda? I liked the Chengdu-one a bit better for the environment as the pits are bigger and appear more natural.

Huge area and beautiful calm park. You have to go in early at 7h30 to get a chance having some moments alone facing some pandas or you will face the classic Chinese crowd. I suggest you get a look at the map before going there in order not to be a bit "lost" and confused while walking through. At the end lets enjoy a coffee at Panda Coffee (near the exit) to relax the legs and enjoy a nice design (even in the coffee cup)

A MUST DO in Chengdu and one of my top 2 reasons for visiting this city (second to eating). As it is summer, going in morning is better suited weather wise for both humans and pandas. You can spend all day walking among the different areas and watch pandas feast on bamboo, climb around and we even got to see a 3 day old panda in the nursery. Make sure to visit the donation center, donate to the research base and take home a stuffed panda among other smaller donation gifts. Better way for your dollars to go than the gift shop.

If you want to experience more people in one spot than you ever have before then this is the place. We visited here as part of a day spent with a local guide who was very helpful in navigating the grounds, especially with prams and kids in tow. There was a very large crowd waiting outside to get in, fortunately our guide got us in quickly. Once inside the crowds were just as hectic. Although there was plenty of space for people to get a view of many of the pandas, there was still constant jostling for positions. We were recommended to go early to be able to see the pandas when they are most active, everyone else must have got the same advice. For all the negatives of a big crowd, the park was nice to see, there were plenty of active pandas, and although the whole of Chengdu visited when we were there, the crowds were reasonably orderly. I would deffinately recommend this spot to visit in Chengdu

What a wonderful experience it is to visit the Giant Panda Research and Breeding base in Chengdu. It's located just outside the city and is easily served by taxis or busses. Being able to see Pandas in this wonderful park like reserve is a life altering experience and one you'll remember for a lifetime.
The park itself is really beautiful with so many comfortable rest areas and walking trails. Its very scenic and extremely well maintained by the park staff. There are lots of eating venues and drink stands, so there's no need to bring anything with you. The park is huge and it takes at least half a day of more to cover all areas. Its best to start very early, we got there at 8am, as the Pandas are active in the mornings but sleep in afternoon.
Seeing Pandas like this is a moving experience. You can get quite close to these wonderful animals and they seem very happy coping with the enormous crowds who flock to the park each day.
This is a lifetime experience and one you can only have in Chengdu in China. If you are planning to visit China at anytime this is a must see, equal to if not more important that the Great Wall etc.
Importantly, you need to go early, and be prepared for large crowds, this is one of Chinas most popular attractions. We visited during the pandemic and it was very crowded but luckily most people are fully masked.

It is a must do when visiting Chengdu! We caught a 'DiDi' straight from our hotel in the morning. From reviews we got there about 8:30am. We bought tickets at the ticket office out the front. Upon entering we did not realise how large it was. We walked all the way to the back of the 'zoo' and made our way through looking at all of the different enclosures. We saw Giant Pandas of all ages, babies, cubs and adults. They were quite active as they were being fed. As it was winter there were not as many people, however at the main enclosures you had to wait to get a good photo.

Hello
Will be visiting in March and would like to know if the Panda Base Volunteer panda keeper is available be and suitable for children. We are excited to have close encounters with pandas. Also does the panda base offer the Panda photo opportunity ?
Thank you

You will see pandas in the grounds. The babies, in the nursery are behind glass and keepers keep the crowds moving on through. Get your camera ready and get a quick photo. There are so many people to get through, you don't have long. You will probably get better photos of the red pandas. They come up close. There are no special photo opportunities, you just have to snap what you see.

Thank you!

I did not see any place that has luggage service that you want, however I really wasn't looking for it. I would suggest that you call or email the research center in order to get a definite answer. The research website should offer the contact info that you need.

Hi. I am in China from 7th September and this is one of the places we will be visiting - I am so excited. I just want to know how expensive the gift shop is? I have 6 grandchildren and would love to take something home from here for them. Thanks
Written 29 August 2019
If you see gift selling outside the park already, pls buy there, for sure cheaper than the gift shop inside. Panda toys are everywhere in Chengdu on the street, you don’t have to only target in the gift shop in the Zoo. Get up really early and enjoy the trip.
