This one is right next to the entrance of Datong City Wall, literally across the street. This place has rich history but I still would visit Datong's other interests first in the following order before visiting this one: 1) Yungang Grottoes 2) Hanging Temple 3)...More

A place of calm. Wonderful architecture. The bits that aren't ancient are those that were repaired400 years ago. Definitely worth the stroll around. Don't miss the 5 dragon screen near the entrance - in slightly better repair than the 9 dragon screen.

I don't know why it is ranked so low! It is better than Huayan monastery in my opinion. This one has a great gardens, secret places to relax. Great art works of buddhas and similar and it was fairly empty - great opportunity for photos!...More

A highlight of Datong. An amazing example of Tang architecture. The wood carvings are top rate, especially the dozen heavenly kings. The entrance carvings are also well preserved. Don't miss this 1,000 year old or so monastery in Datong

I highly recommend to someone who love Chinese Architecture! It is really great temple. I also recommend to hire a guide for brief introduction. It will highlight the visit.
