We went in December when the snow was prevalent. What a magical place to experience in the snow. No tourists so we had the whole place to ourselves pretty much. And this heightened the experience. beautiful surroundings. magical atmosphere. the Temple was one of the best places we have ever visited. Such brilliant engineering.

We went to see Mt. Hengshan and on our way to the mountain are Hanging monasteries. Such an amazing view to look at. We were just amazed to see it from outside and we were just contented and we did not want to go inside the temple. It was still unbelievable.

Most hôtels in Datong propose visits to the monasteries. They are quite far (almost two hours to get there). Unfortunately, the guides only speak chinese.

We went in the winter when it was relatively less crowded, so we could explore the temple at our own pace without getting jostled around. The whole place has a really serene atmosphere and it isn't as scary as it seems. In fact, the structure is extremely sturdy and stable so not to worry :) There are lots of rooms... More

I spend my new years day here it was breathtaking scenery, frozen and snow at the foot of the mountain and warm weather at the top of the mountain. This mountain is in the North west of china near the city of Datong and 4 hours long distance bus to Taiyuan Shanxi.

The Hanging Temple is quite magnificent. Pls go real early. Not just to beat the crowd but also you get the morning sun shining on the Temple. I was there around 9 plus. Wished I had gone earlier. Once there, grab a few photos of the Temple then suggest quickly get to the Temple proper. The walkway at the temple... More

These temples are very impressive and visiting th was a great thrill. Climbing the stairs and visiting the different rooms of these temples made it a great visit.

How was it even possible as one walk toward this hanging temple will think, all the supports looked as if they were long thin chopsticks. 60 and over pay half price if you bring your passport. If you had gone to the top of St. Peter's Basilica, you can easily get around the steps of this one. Don't miss this... More

We were not allowed on the Hanging Temple when we visited in 2015 due to falling rocks but this time round we were granted full access to the Hanging Temple. A 'must see' when you are travelling between Taiyuen and Datong. Never lean on the flimsy railings when you are walking on the narrow corridors.

I didn’t know what to expect and only arranged to go here to appease my aunt. Let me just say how pleased I am that we went – this was definitely one of the highlights of our entire China holiday! The monastery is about a 1.5 – 2 hour drive from Datong city and it’s well worth it. After driving... More
