Wow. Hard to imagine how the decision to build this was made. We were amazed to see this truly spectacular site. Also you can see remnants of the Great Wall from tbis site.

We weren't sure if taking a 4 hour car ride (one way) from Beijing to see this would be worth it, but it was. We had an excellent time seeing a very unique place that you are unlikely to duplicate anywhere else in the world....More

An amazing place with 45 caves of various ages and sizes filled with an astonishing array and variety of carvings - most, if not all, Buddhist. From walls of identical figures to friezes depicting the story of his life. Some of the more ornate caves...More

It's worth spending a couple of days in Datong to visit these World Heritage Grottoes, the Hanging Monastery, and other sites. This site is not as extensive as the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, but still provide insight into Chinese Buddhist history, art, and culture.

The Grattoes are, of course, amazing. What I didn't expect was that there was a coal mine directly across the river from them. So, you're trying to view these ancient carvings and the smoke and stink of the mine follow you the whole way! I...More

I've been to a lot of Buddhist temples in china and SE Asia, but seeing carving of statues in the caves was something most unique. Definitely a great day trip.

The Yungang grottoes are truly amazing and the carvings are spectacular - it's well worth spending at least a couple of hours here. Take your time and browse through the caves, then turn back and re-visit your favourites. The tour groups can be a bit...More

It snowed the day before we went to Datong. When we arrived from Beijing early in the morning in the train station, we decided to eat breakfast first at a nearby shop. After eating we took a bus going directly to the place. The ticket...More

it's a long way to travel but there are only 2 things worth seeing in Datong - these and the hanging temple. these are very impressive and well worth the trip out of town

You will need to take an hour plane ride from Beiijing to reach Datong. Most hôtels (even taxi drivers that service the Airport) propose excursions to the grottoes and other monasteries in the province.

Hey Susy, Datong is definitely a good place to visit. You have Yungang Grottoes that are accessible by public bus so no need to spend money on a driver (they try to rip off foreigners as much as they can). Not far from... More
Hi I am to decide if the trip to Datong is a do not miss stop. I really want to see the grottoes and hanging monastery but the travel from Beijing and then moving along to Pingyao seems very complicated. Can anyone speak about this. Beijing - Datong - Pingyao - Xian - Shanghai. I have to figure out how best to travel from Beijing to Datong and then onto Pingyao. Can I really do the grottoes and monastery in a day if I book a guide and car? and then spend the night in Datong? Please share with your thoughts on these two sights being do not miss sights. Thank you for your time. Carol
