Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Must-visit for people interested in history and culture to see remaining unrestored sections of the Great Wall and China’s largest fort cluster (see picture). The original layout contained two forts, a wool and horse market, tax office, temples etc. You can still see the 得胜堡 (Deshengbao) fort, 德胜口 (Deshengkou) gate to Inner Mongolia and remaining parts of the wall of the Datong section around 1km beyond 得胜堡village. The elderly villagers in the little town are friendly and helpful.

A smattering of historic forts, scenic ruins and occasional hikes through the countryside-tempting fare for the intrepid. The village is part of the Great Wall, just for the Army, The city wall is made of earth, it is 500 meters in width and 550 meters in length. Now there are some old people lived there.
Out the train station of Datong, you can find a mini Bus to Fengzhen(丰镇), every 30mins each one, 16RMB. When you get on the bus, you just tell the driver you want to go DeShengBao(得胜堡)。About 1hour you should get down, and see the village name, after walking 1.5km, you will find the village.
If you want take a taxi, go and back is 200RMB.
You can stay Green Island Youth Hostel in Datong(大同绿岛青年旅舍), it is 100 meters far from the train station, in 5th Floor of a very high building on opposite of train station.

It is just an hour drive from Datong. Terrain changes to flat grassy land and my driver pointed out an Inner Mongolia town in the distance. Along the way, you could see signages of other forts at various turnoffs from the main road. Hongci, Buziwan, then Desheng. They form a string of forts just inside the greatwall. These forts were troops/supply holding areas so you may see settlements in them.
Desheng has beacons which have staircase to go up. Breathtaking views up there on the surrounding landscape. Get the guide to point out the greatwall line (dilapidated not easy to spot) that runs through the landscape.
If you could just drive up the main road by another few hundred metres, it is the border into inner mongolia. An interesting stopover if you are not visiting further in.
