Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

The Mukden Palace is not as large as the Forbidden City, of Beijing, but still an Emperor’s magnificent residence and the place from where he governed. With over 110 buildings, it was home to many who served the royal dynasties and some were used by the Emperor’s ministers who assisted in running the state.

We went there on 1st of may and there were so many people. It is very beautiful palace although it cannot be compared with the Beijing forbidden city. It is a lot smaller but the palace is great with the history of the first two emperors.

Shenyang Palace Museum is one of the only two imperial buildings in China, also known as the Shengjing Palace, which was the imperial palace in the early Qing Dynasty, Nearly 400 years ago, before the Qing Dynasty entered the customs, its imperial palace was located in Shenyang. After the move to Beijing, the palace was called the Palace of Companionship, and later it was called the Palace of the Imperial Palace of Shenyang.
Today, it is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, under the name “The Imperial Palace of the Qing Dynasty in Shenyang.”
The palace grounds are large (measuring about 60,000 square metres) and one can easily spend one to 1.5 to 3 hours sightseeing here. The grounds are not as large (i.e., at about one-twelfth the size) as those of Beijing’s Forbidden City. It has in excess of 300 rooms and about 20 courtyards. Unlike The Forbidden City, greater access is allowed to see the interior of the rooms and thus get a better understanding of the accommodations the people lived in.
To better understand the palace buildings and grounds, having a knowledgeable tour guide is best.

The Imperial Place in Shenyang I thought was more interesting than the Forbidden City. More buildings could be accessed and the weapons were interesting. Being winter there were fewer visitors on the day I visited. The toilet block was large in comparison to the complex. Follow the circuit as per the guide. Entry 60 Yuan and its a plastic card which you don't get to keep.

The Shenyang palace was the royal palace for the Manchurian emperors before they took over the entire China and moved the capital to Beijing. It is a much smaller palace than the Beijing palace, maybe less than 1/10. However, it is more Manchurian original, especially the first-built eastern corridor.
Although much smaller and less well maintained, it is still interesting to visit. I like the palaces for the queen and concubines. They are very basic, and showing the original Manchurian customs. Unlike in the Beijing palace, where the emperor called one of his wives to spend the night with him in his palace, in Shenyang, the emperor had no his own palace, and spent the night at the palace of one of the wives'. Quite an upgrade for the emperor after moving to Beijing!

This is an outdoor attraction that I visited early spring. It was very easy to see as there aren't as many tourists as the Beijing palaces. It isn't as large albeit by no means small. Great architecture, nice courtyard, easy walk. What else do you want? I heard that summers are hot and winters bitter cold; spring was marvelous!

Fantastic place to go, another classic. Take your time, no English language is used in the descriptions. But the fore most it’s not that difficult to understand.

There were a lot to see in this palace of the last empire of China. While it was much smaller than the one in Beijing, it still displayed the once powerful empire development. It would be a very busy tourist city in the summer.

What days and times is the procession or culture show? Wikitravel (alot of old info) mentions a procession just on Summer Saturdays while Youtube shows videos of a Manchu wedding reenactment or cultural show. There is no mention of anything in the English section of sypm org.cn site - Looking at visiting late June / early July....

i think you will not need any guide inside the imperial palace cause all halls and rooms are entitled by names in English plus to show rooms where all periods of the country are explained in details in English. all what you need is a good camera and good feet to continue exploring this place.

I plan to visit this Palace in late January when the weather will be very cold, is this likely to be practical? Is there any other historic sites in Shenyang that is recommended?

actually visiting china in winter is very hard to tolerate. i preferred i visited Shenyang in spring. it is a beautiful city but cold weather didn't let me investigate many places.
