We have been to quite a few of these types of ancient streets, but this one is by far our favorite. The buildings were very well maintained and there wasn't a lot of people. You wouldn't see the big crowds in the big cities here, which made the stroll down the street a lot more pleasant. It took us a while to find the actual street, but walking around the entire area is a nice experience anyways.
The entire area is divided into two main sections, the older and more authentic section on the mountain (requires some stair climbing) and the newer part that was converted from old factory buildings. We entered through the newer area via Chang Jiang Rd. This area has quite a few options for restaurant food, including several western food options, cafes, and bars. We had dinner at the Paulaner, which had live music and outdoor seating. The atmosphere there was very nice.
Climbing up the hill, there is a street that is the authentic old street with many shops for souvenirs, local food, and clothes. The view from the hill allows you to see the entire old town laid out. It's quite a cool sight. Continue down the hill as you follow the path and you will reach the more commercial area with the stores and restaurants. Along the way there is a glass floor that allows you to see the staircases built throughout the different dynasties (Qing, Ming, Yuan, Song, Tang).

Once you visit the beautiful Zhenjiang, this is the first place to be. Once, this area was actually wharfs for the ferries and other boats but with the changes of the river it became land. Full of restored buildings, shops, tea houses, cafés, restaurants, clubs (of Chinese and Western Type) the pedestrian streets of this place are indeed tourist magnets. The visitor, even if there is no time or will to sit down and enjoy a meal or coffee, he/she will for sure enjoy his/her walk and be mesmerized by the beautiful classical Chinese Architecture of the buildings, the decoration of the stores and shops and the view of the people who enjoy their free time there. Indeed this place gives you a sense of old China. It will be better to start your walk from the Museum of Zhenjiang and wander around the scenic area at least for a couple of hours. The authorities of Zhenjiang paid much attention to a project that would make every corner of this area beautiful.

The street is very nice and seems to be maintained as original. It is really what you imagine when you think of ancient Chinese shopping streets. There are good restaurants, including some western ones. Also you can go up the hill to the temple for a great view of the city. However, avoid the outskirts of the area where there are a lot of newly-built (grey brick) but empty buildings- the area is abandoned, so it could be a little dangerous.

This was the ferry where Marco Polo went ashore when he arrived in Zhenjiang from Yangzhou. Walking along the blue flagstone is really of great comfort. This is such a suitable and relaxing place with plenty of western-style architectures. I really appreciate the sight when sunset falls and the street is covered with glow. At night, lounge bars open up and the street wakes. And I enjoy taking a drop there.

This is such a beautiful place.. I heard from a Chinese friend that this place about a love story.. if you visit Zhenjiang going there is a must.

For Westerners like me the idea of the Tourist Walking Street from many Chinese City can be both a bit fascinating and a bit strange. In the end the assortment of shops, streetfood and other attractions can be a bit repetetive. All this is also valid for this steet. Still it has some things that deserve a honorable mention. You feel that it used to be a "real" place, next to the old river location. It is nice that the road is on a slope giving some nice views. And it is not spoiled by shopkeepers who feel their advertisments should be a bit bigger than the others or do not need maintenance. Looks like the local government got good control. You find steetfood in the road directly and more restaurants, also one western "paulaner" in the road that runs parallel to the north

We spent two weeks here, staying at the Yazz hotel. The area has been transformed since we were here eight years ago and is now a big tourist destination. Steps from the bottom of the Ferry led to the Xinjindu sightseeing area, Yun Tai Hill and the Yun Tai Pavilion that can be seen from many spots down below. The displays in the pavilion were wonderful and depicted scenes of Zhenjiang from each century. This site was not on trip advisor, but will hopefully be added. From the top, in the opposite direction, a path leads down into the beautiful Boxian Park. Lower down, towards Xijin Ferry is the Lifesaving Museum and the entry includes access to a few areas that I found fascinating. We ate dinner at a different restaurant every night and still didn't get to all of them. None of them were on Trip Advisor. Our favorite was Meiweijiayao. Another nice spot with good food and an interesting atmosphere was Woaixihuanli. The one called The Ferry was horrible. It was always empty and we found out why. The service and food were poor. There were shops that had a nice range of gift items from higher quality to inexpensive.There were seemingly endless alleys with restaurants, tea rooms, a spa, a hostel and more shops. The tourist information office also had a few gift items available for sale and the ladies were helpful. A translation app was needed to interact. There was an ATM located outside of the office. The people watching opportunities in the evening was fantastic. All ages of folks were having fun. There was a pavilion surrounded by water and an evening film was shown a few times a night along with effects over the water. There was a live performance on the weekend. There were statues depicting life in the area in the past. There were several sections with beautiful gardens and a fish pond. The morning was the best time to walk the area and see people engaged in activities that we don't see in the US. One morning, there were people practicing something with ribbons and when they saw my interest and the fact that I was videoing them, 12 of them got into formation and told me to go stand in front to get a video. It took them three attempts before they were happy enough with their performance to let me leave. This was just one example of the exceptional the friendliness and fun we experienced throughout the two weeks in the area.

I wondered whether the detour up to Zhenjiang en route from Nanjing to Wuxi was worth it, but when I came to 西津渡, I knew I made the right choice. This place is full of friendly people, beautiful sights and awesome food! Do spend a whole day here! The 锅盖面 is a must-try. There is a stall that has pictures of Chinese celebrities pasted at the entrance of the shop. That seems to be the most popular stall.

This is a pier for the boat in ancient China, the scale of this village is surprisingly big, it consists of a few streets, and an old British Embassy. It gave me an impression that the village is a bit like Lijiang, but it is good here that there are still not much commercial activities here.
