This pagoda is quite unique in Mongolia. The style is from Indian Buddhism. Although it is called the "1000-Buddha Pagoda", there are actually some 1563 carvings of Buddha on its exterior walls. Inside the Pagoda there is, sadly, nothing at all - it was all stripped-out and destroyed in the Cultural Revolution. However, the empty interior has been used to display an ancient stone-carved Mongolian Map of the Cosmos - on Buddhist principles. Another copy of it is outside, set in the walls of the Pagoda grounds.

The old town of Hohhot. Fantastic streets around the temple with a large number of stalls selling allsorts. Another street has a number of small cafe type shops. The temple was very very impressive and free. A genuine taste of China culture.

Interesting tower for a short visit. Do not need to spend a lot of time here as there's nothing much to see except the pagoda.

It was just an okay temple, the architecture was okay and the pagoda in the back was a little underwhelming. Not worth paying for a ticket to see.

The urban sprawl of Hohhot has few real attractions to offer, so the Five-Pagoda Temple may very well be one of the top attractions inside the city. Having said that, the temple pales in comparison to other grander and more historic temples dotted all over...More

This is a calm and peaceful little temple quite similar to other Buddhist temples all over China, except that you can see influences of Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism and the Mongol script all coexisting. Quite a nice vibe, but not a must see. Entrance is free...More

Nice little temple, very unique in architecture compared to typical Chinese temple buildings. Loved the detailed work and hundreds of statues of Budha carved on the pagodas.

Could only see the top of the pagodas from outside. The cab driver was also not sure of the location of the pagodas themselves so expect a bit of walking around

This is a must see for those who won't have a chance to visit other places in Asia, it's a beautiful blend of Chinese, Tibetan and Hindu in one surprisingly small parcel! It's all wonderfully preserved, and you are allowed to climb the very steep...More
