Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I am a native of Wuhan, and I often take some foreign guests to visit Wuhan. For me, Guiyuan Temple is: Founded in 1658, Guiyuan temple is one of the most important temples in Wuhan. It is a daily custom of many Wuhan citizens to come to Guiyuan temple to pray for blessings. On the fifth day of the lunar new year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims come here to "rob the head of incense" and worship the God of wealth. The most distinctive feature of Guiyuan temple is the 500 golden Arhats in arhat hall. You can try to count the Arhats and see how your luck is.

This sprawling temple complex is by far the most interesting sight in Wuhan and a must see stop. Although there is a nominal charge of 10CNY to enter, this was waived when I arrived as nobody had change of a 100CNY note!
Inside there are multiple temples and shrines, with a variety of architecture and interior design. Around every corner there seems to be something new to explore. The only disappointment is that photography is not allowed inside any shrine, which is a great shame as there are spectacular things to see; but it's a totally fair policy as this is a working religious sanctuary.
There is a very, very lard wooden pagoda in the north of the park, but sadly, you cannot enter or climb. You can however visit the shrines underneath, which provides a respite from the heat for sure and the darkness of the cave like shrine is very relaxing.
Make sure you see the Hall of Arhats and follow the directions posted at the entrance for counting the golden Buddhas. Definitely a must see in Wuhan and well worth a few hours exploration.

There are multiple temples in this complex. For a small fee you can ring the large bronze bell, and write on a prayer tablet to add to the large rack. After choosing the number of the Lohan which corresponds to your age, go around the corner to purchase a small metal souvenir which includes your fortune. The site's official gift shop offers excellent art objects, jewelry, and other items that make nice gifts.

At this temple, you are first greeted with someone selling items that appear to be a ticket process but are ribbons to give to Buddha. Then inside they tell you those are BAD luck ribbons. I think they are working together to get you to buy more. Inside is quiet, serene and peaceful. The turtle garden is neat. Aside from that, no photos are allowed. I understand the religious aspect of this but having been to the large temple in Hangzhou, where pictures and video are welcomed, this was sad. The point for so many to come here is to remember it long after you leave and share with others. I did sneak a couple of photos against the rules. Sorry. This was not the experience I was hoping for. I would not suggest this attraction.

I was originally going to give the temple 3 stars, but that was before I discovered the many different shrines and halls on the grounds. When I first arrived, I thought that the main tower was the entirety of the temple. It’s worth walking around there to see some paintings and if you talk, your voice will echo creepily off the walls. Unfortunately the stairs to go up were blocked off and I don’t know whether they are open at certain periods. Then, I checked out the halls on one side of the temple grounds. Don’t miss the hall with over 400 golden buddhas inside. There are also some giant buddhas in there and in other halls though I don’t think photography of the buddhas is allowed. Well worth à look if you have some time in Wuhan. It’s only a 15 minute walk from the subway station.

It is beautiful, don't get me wrong. There are wonderful things to see in this temple. It is one of the biggest temples in Wuhan and attracts lots of visitors, especially on certain festival days (I would highly discourage folks from going during those times if you can figure out when they will be as its simply packed.) I didn't feel this temple was as genuine as the other temples in Wuhan. I much prefer BaoTong Temple with its many old trees. Also, felt other temples had people who went there as their place of worship, not just to take pictures. Here, most people will have a camera in their hands.

The entire experience to Guiyuan was an extremely unpleasant one which began by the fact that this was a fee paying attraction. I am a Buddhist and it is totally against our principles to charge a fee to enter our temple. I think we should welcome all with open arms to have a chance to visit one of our temples!
The sound of Chinese spitting on the floor, arguments occurring etc, distracted from the serene environment that this temple should have provided. It felt like a scam. I will not return.

You pay to get into this small crowded place full of screaming children and people who love to spit. You'll find more people spitting on things than anything interesting about this place.

It is wonderful to see Chinese people paying homage to and practicing Buddhism. Also, mixed with a display of Taoist ministers. The sheer numbers of golden Bodhisattvas and amazingly beautiful protectors are dazzling together with practicing monks and lay people. A very human side of China!! Do go across the street to the Chinese vegetarian restaurant. It is the best vegetarian restaurant i have found.
