Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Dongguan, an industrial city in the Guangdong province, is a pivotal place in modern Chinese history. It was one of the main battlefields of the Opium War and genuinely changed the course of Qing China. This informative museum, situated at the place where Qing official Lin Zexu destroyed British opium, tells the Chinese narrative. English illustration is available. Free admission but prior registration is mandatory.

China has suffered much from the crimes of foreigners, in this case, the British. In many ways, the roots of the Hong Kong problems of today are those planted by the British. Very informative museum. Well worth a visit.

I enjoy history and have read Clavell's Tai-Pan several times which brings the history of this area of Southern China and HongKong to life so visiting the Opium War Museum was a real treat. It's perhaps a half day visit for the museum and the grounds. Loved it.

It is an informative museum on the opium trade, prohibition, Chinese public opposition to opium, exhibit of opium smoking tools and pipes, and history of the opium wars. It has an exhibition area of approximately 5,000 square metres and houses more than 1,500 cultural relics, including paintings and other artistic works. It takes the visitor through the history of the first (1839 to 1842) and second opium war (1856 to 1860).Yes, the British and other foreign opium peddlers were the bad guys.

Admission is free, as it is in many museums in China.

We really enjoyed the Opium Museum. At first we thought it was so-so by looking from outside but do yourself a favour and venture inside and then into each of the buildings. In the main museum hall get the audio headset which just needs to be secured with a refundable deposit. It is in English and takes you through the whole museum. We found it fascinating to learn about the Opium Wars and the hardships and challenges The locals and leaders faced due to the Opium addiction which swept the country. We spent 3 hours in this part of the museum. Overall it was an excellent day out and thoroughly recommended.

A must see attraction providing a full account of the history on how China got bullied by the foreign forces by implanyting the toxic opium kinto China while pretending a legitmate trade. A mirro reflection of how corrupted the AngloSaxon was then and perhaps even now

Very interesting museum and it gives some background into the crimes committed against the Chinese people by the British. I visited the museum during the HongKong protests against Chinese rule. I can say that after visiting the museum I have no sympathy for the HK protesters once they start waving US and British flags asking for "liberation". The Chinese Century of Humiliation started with the Opium Wars and the crimes against the Chinese people resulted in the loss of HK to the British.

Having heard about the Opium wars and not thought about them too much. It was a real eye-opener. Although the information boards were partisan the extent and volume of information were damning. Another black mark for `The British Empire`
