Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful mansion right in the center of town. It was built by a local magnate Sara Braun and today it belongs to a club which opened it to the public as a museum, and it also houses a small hotel and a restaurant. If you go to see the museum ask the attendant to show you the restaurant part of the building as they have a Shackleton room there with a series of interesting prints on the wall. Entry fee is 2000 CLP.

This is a quick visit, in which we see some rooms in an interesting mansion. There are not many rooms to visit and the price is very affordable. An explanatory pamphlet is given and the visit is at your own expense. Next door, there is a cafe and in the other part of the building there is a hotel.

You can enjoy this exhibit of the home and lifestyle of Sarah Braun. The furnishings, wall decor, carpentry all show the opulence and level of living she attained. Some areas are in need of a little TLC. make sure you visit the Braun-Menendez museum too.

We visited as part of a tour group, unfortunately many other tour groups were present and with little crowd control it was difficult to hear our guide speak.
Nevertheless the building and contents are impressive, opulent in their era and giving a glimpse of Punta Arenas’ high society residents during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The building dates to 1895 and was declared a National monument in 1973.
Take time to admire the European-style façade, the elegant balconies, portico windows and spires. Notice the winter garden, crowned by a roof made of iron and glass. Sara Braun was reputed to be the richest woman in Patagonia.

Admission is so cheap ($1?) you need to go to understand the history of the region, but the tiny English brochure is so poorly translated and so brief that you don't grasp as much of the history as you could if they would put more effort into it. You walk through a few rooms and upstairs, on your own, and that is it. Takes 10 min.

The Sara Braun mansion and attached restaurant dominates the NW corner of the the town's main square and something you cannot miss. The mansion has a very descreet entrance that is not marked but is actually the main street entrance to the former home of socialite Sara Braun. The rooms open to the public on the tour are furnished and this alone is worth the small price of admission. It is two levels so it is not a tour for the physically challenged.

I absolutely love this place! It takes me back in time. In visiting, I can see in my mind E.Shackelton climbing those same marble steps to request aid in rescuing his men off of elephant island.
I just loved the original art, stairs, high ceilings, dark wood etc...
Call me a romantic, Yes, this is a cool place to visit!

Awesome! At one corner of this main plaza you will find the Club de la Union building which was this remarkable womaon's home. Open the gate press the bell, and for 2000 CLP (less than £2.50) you can walk around this quite fabulous and fascinating building. Also, don't miss the Shackelton Bar and restauarnt in the fine building attached.

1) What hours is this musuem open?
2) do they have an audio guide?
Written 19 November 2016
Not really sure about their hours, but it should be open at 10 am. It's not a fancy museum, a pretty house well decorated. I'm sure they don't have an audio guide.
