Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This museum was very interesting and had printed guides in English, Spanish and German. It was a little difficult to get to from Arica, but look for the yellow collectivos that say Azapa and ask to go to the Museo. It should cost about 1000 pesos. I thought the displays were interesting and well designed. Definitely worth the trip. I wish there would have been a map of the town at the museum, so we could have seen what else the town had to offer.

If you are interested in history you should come here. There are shared taxis (colectivos), coloured completely in yellow that say Azapa and they depart from a "parada mixta" at the corner of Patricio Lynch with Chacabuco. The taxi leaves you in front of the museum, the drive costs 1,200 pesos per person, takes 15 minutes. The main attraction at the museum is the Sala Chinchorro with the mummies but they also show other artefacts of the Chinchorro culture. For being the main museum, I found the explanations were a bit scarce. The "Museum In Situ" in Arica has a great audio guide, maybe do that one first before coming here. Both visits can easily be done in one morning or afternoon.

This museum is a twenty minute drive from Arica. You can catch a yellow taxi colectivo at the corner of General Lagos and Chacabuco for 1000 pesos. It leaves once the taxi is full. (To return is a little more tricky...if you're in luck, another colectivo will catch site of you walking along the dusty road to the museum and stop for you or you can turn left at the museo sign and walk a little further to catch one.) The older part of the museum has a twenty page booklet describing each glass exhibit in detail, available in various languages. The simple display of the mummified man, woman, and two infants is affecting. The newer section is a beautiful structure but it helps to read Spanish. Very peaceful courtyard outside, hot and calm with cooing doves.

I knew my trip to Arica could not be complete without a trip to this Museum. It was an easy taxi ride out, but not one back. I had to walk back to the hiway and wait for a "colectiva" to ride back to town.
The museum was very interesting and gave an excellent view of life in pre-Inca time to present day.
The newer section held the many very old mummies that have been excavated. My only problem was that everything was in Spanish and there was no translation booklet like the one given in the older section. I was expecting to be able to view the mummies closer over glass cases as one does in the Museum in Cairo. That was not the case here.
All in all, it was an interesting display. Also, the grounds are very nice.

Oldest mummies in the world. Taxi from Arica costs 18,000 pesos including 1 hour wait and return trip. Entrance 2,000 pesos. All in Spanish but incredible to see. Takes an hour to view. Also petroglyphs (stone carvings) and incredible intricate artefacts including fish hooks made from cacti thorns.

This museum is placed 15 kilometers outside Arica in the middle of nowhere.
The surroundings are nice and you can spend 10-15 minutes aprreciating the place.
The exhibition consist of the description of how olive oil is produced, a small collection of geoglyphs and a exhibitions of very old mummies.
The exhibition is well made and looks very nice, but content wise it is not that interesting. The mummi part is cool, but the exhibition in the city center (Colon 10) is better and much more accessible. All imformation in the museum is only.in Spanish.
It is easy and cheap to get to the exhibition from the center if you take a collectivo.

This museum is situated 12 kilometres from Arica. You can either rent a bike and go there yourselve (1,5 hours) or take a taxi (4 euros).
The museum has two buildings, and you will get a leaflet with a lot of information about the artifacts in the museum. Worth a visit if you are interested in these older cultures. Apart from the textiles and usual shards, they also have several mummies on display, which is very interesting.

I note that one reviewer seems to have missed that the mummies are housed in a separate building. Be sure to see these and keep your tickets to allow you to go in.
The main museum is very well laid out and is a tribute to the Universidad de Tarapaca who are responsible for it. Often display values are not of the best in museums, but here everything is very well displayed.
Many will come to see the mummies, now only ten yerars after their excavation. These are very well displayed and the associated artefacts are fascinating. Don't just buy some of the local olives (but do this also) - see this museum.

I don’t think they do, but in any case it is inexpensive: $2.000 pesos.
There are ATM machines close to the harbor.
I’ll go again tomorrow and will ask if it still interests you.
