Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The train is super slow and very bumpy. It's fairly cheap if you buy the cheaper class tickets. Nice views until it gets dark, but we could see the nice paved road and buses passing the train the whole time. The train also gets in rather late if you take the 2.30 departure

I have already finished trip in Uyumi.
Train and toilets was clean and staffs are nice.
Buffet in restaurant car delicious and not to much expensive.
I have only two remarks:
- to loudly movies!
- the train departure time is too late and in Uyumi arrive at 21:20
Around 18 starting be dark!
But my average experience is good.

We decided to take FCA train to get to Uyuni and back to Oruro as a safer and more comfortable option and we don't regret it. The service exceeded our expectations. The train goes from Oruro to Villazón (Argentina) departing everyday in two options: Expresso del Sur and Wara Wara del Sur, the more popular one. We traveled in the executive wagons of Expresso del Sur. It's really worth it. It's not expensive. The seats are super confy, reclinable, whereas the other train does not have this option. There's a good space between seats. There's air conditioning and fans, tv (playing for the most part latin music videoclips but also movies and local tv programs), blankets and pillows at night and a dining cart. The cars are very clean and well maintained. The staff is absolutely gentle. They make everything to make you feel comfortable. Most of them are middle aged man. Besides the dining car, they sell coffee, cookies, juices, etc in each car. So you dont have to go to the dining car to have a small snack.By the way, the dining car is always crowded, its hard to find an empty table. People linger there for hours. The menu is excellent but expensive. Cheapest dishes at about 60bs and beverages at 20bs. The taste though, makes up for the price. The food is delicious. As for the trip itself, it's peaceful, since the train slowly crosses the altiplano and small villages until its first stop in Uyuni. The landscape is very beautiful and unique. The train crosses lake Uru Uru right in the middle of it. You can see loads of flamingoes and other birds. But, seven hours can tire even the thoughtest ones. I spent most of the time walking between cars and taking pictures. Unfortunately, because of the dust, it is advised not to open the windows in many parts. So the air can get thick, specially at night. It's advisable to take something to watch if you can, take games too, anything to help kill the time. Also, get ready for the cold at night. It does get cold.

Taken as purely a means of transportation, this train loses to an intercity bus. A train journey took 15 hours. A bus makes the trip in a bit more than five. Seating on a bus is luxurious with plenty of legroom. While seats on the train look quite promising, they are not comfortable at all. I developed a back ache five hours into the journey and suffered miserably until the end. In addition, for a man my size (XXL), legroom was a bit scarce. On-board toilet was a blessing. Throughout the journey attendants kept it in an immaculate condition. Here is a significant advantage over buses that make a single pit-stop on an overnight run.
The one unique reward offered by the train is the amazing scenery. The dull and boring portion of the journey across the altiplano is completed during the night, and by sunrise the tracks start descending through a maze of canyons. The vistas are truly breathtaking. There are volcanoes as a backdrop, abysmal gorges right below the tracks and exciting wild-west type rock formations later on the way. And there is no other way of seeing it all than by train. For me it was definitely worth the suffering. But I went back by bus. The trip took place in 2013.

One of the most beautiful train trips of my life.

The landscape is impressive and changes radically during the journey.
It's not just a train trip, it's also a time trip. A trip to Bolivia's past, when the railroad was the main means of transportation and many places were only accessible by train.

The train also has a bathroom. Unlike many buses, it is very clean and runs!

If you have the opportunity, definitely do it!!!

Trains leave Villazón every Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
