Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I happened upon this gem of a museum while wandering around the Deira neighborhood of Dubai. I was more interested in learning about the history and culture of Dubai rather than seeing the glitz and glamour of it. This is a self-guided museum that gives one an account of the school in the early 1900s. It's not a must-see attraction, but if one wants to learn more about the history of the area, it is a nice way to pass an hour or so.

We came across this restored school purely by accident, when looking for the gold souk. It is right next to the heritage house in Deira, both of which are worth a visit if you are in the area or are at interested in old Dubai, before the boom.It was a school from 1912 to 1963 and it has been set up to show the history of the school. Wander around the courtyard and look behind the small wooden doors to find out a bit about what school life would have been like. Entrance is free.

This is a nice museum in the heart of Deira in Old Dubai. Hard to find, but worth the effort. Interesting exhibits on the history of Dubai and life in the old city.

An interesting historical site in old part of the town. The two story building is a well preserved arab school from the beginning of the 20th century. The entrance is free and there are self explanatory placards all around. Don't miss to visit the museum after the touristy gold and spice souks, enjoy the silence and try to feel the atmosphere of the century old very authentic school.

I visited the Al Ahmadiya school, which is located in the heart of Deira not too far from the more famous Gold and Spice Souks. The school was converted into a heritage building, showing how traditional schools used to be.

A central courtyard was surrounded by a two-storey building, with classrooms on both floors. The place was rather simple and unassuming in its layout. It is worth a visit only if one is deeply interested in the traditional education system (now not visible), else q visit to the Dubai Museum and the Bastakiya area are sufficient. This place is currently closed for renovations and hopefully, its new avatar will be worth it.

Easy to get to by the Dubai metro at Al Ras station! Friendly gate guard offered a simple welcome and orientation. It's a two story building with self explanatory placards and well captioned displays. Can't help to feel the honor of being part of the initial institution. Well worth the short time it takes to visit. Afterwards proceed on to the nearby Poet's House, souk and then to the wharf to catch an abra ( water taxi) to continue visiting that side of the creek!

This is next door to Heritage House which (if you need an address) is on Sikka Street. There's not as much to see as the house with much more information than exhibits. Again there's loads of info available with a leaflet, signs, videos.
There's a gentlemen's toilet here (women's are in Heritage House) and a water fountain.

I'm not a big museum fan. But I only went to check it out because it was literally next door to where I was staying at. Since I'm not into museums, I found it quite boring. The school was restored nicely, so it may be of interest to those who are into museums or history.

Just like the heritage house, the entrance of this oldest school is also free. They are also a short distance apart. Because it is free and shows a bit of the history, this is a must visit when you are in the area.

It may only be small, but at least it is the start for getting a feel for the country and the history of the people in it. It has been well done and there are interesting information boards in English. Quite remarkable to think that it is in my life time that the first schools for girls were established and only a few years before my birth that proper boys schools were built. Now they are paying top wages for teachers from all of the world in rapidly developing schools!
Some genuine local architecture.
It is hard to find- behind the gold souk - off the creek- but persevere as it is also next to the heritage house- which is an even more extensive excellent museum and a great restaurant with authentic Arabic food- (which you can read about in the interactive displays in the museum). Quite simply these three places were the only saving grace for me in Dubai- great if interested culture and history and want to escape the crowds and the bling! WE were the only people there when we arrived about 6.30pm at night. They shut at 7.30pm I think.
If I had children with me I definitely would have taken them as this would be a good contrast to the water parks and other exciting features- so maybe they could learn some of the true past of the people.
