when you walk at Imam Ali square you can see a tall minaret which belongs to Ali mosque. this mosque is not an eye-catching building so just to see the minaret is enough.

The minaret dates to the end of the C11th and is one of rare surviving Seljuk monuments in the city. It is 160 feet tall and the crumbled top has been restored.

Esfahan has two great squares. Most of the people know Naqsh-e Jahan but this minaret is located on the Atigh or Kohneh (Old) square. It is also very big and beautiful.

After the number of mosques, palaces you have seen in Esfahan, the visit to Ali minaret and the shrine seems a little bit in excess. I had this feeling, but had no choice as the program was pre-established.
The minaret is very tall one of the tallest in Iran ( I do not remember where it is) and the shrine is very famous also.
You better decide wether you want to enter the shrine or not. I felt bored of removing my shoes, so I did not enter and then I am not able to comment the interior.

It is not as high as the Sarban minaret (two meters less), but as impressive and built for a similar purpose: to be like beacon for caravans that were heading for the oasis of Isfahan (a bit like a lighthouse for ships approaching the coast). Of course it has religious significance as well.
Take some time to look at the relief work in brick, quite advanced for an 11th century minaret. It is the oldest minaret in town.

You can stop by here after you visit Jame mosque. Bazaar starst from the south east of Jame mosque, you keep walking down and you'll eventually come to the sqaure at your left and you'll see tall minaret. The square was empty on Friday noon time. We didn't go inside but appreciated the tall minaret.
