- Harriet W7 contributionsBamboo WeavingSuch a wonderful place. The food is excellent and the gifts are beautiful. My partner and I did a bamboo weaving workshop and our teacher Oun was amazing. He spoke great English, was very patient, friendly and funny. We enjoyed his company and got to learn how to make bamboo placemats. It was a wonderful experience. We love reading how you all love Oun as much as we do! We'll make sure to share your kind words with him and we hope to welcome you again in the future. - SmithyontheroadBlackwood, Australia26 contributionsUnique Laos on showA thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in a gorgeous setting on the Mekong. My family took part in a silk weaving session led by Oun and the master weavers. Each phase of the process, we were walked through the different steps to create our own piece on a loom. On completion we were taken on a tour of the gardens to gain a better understanding of the dyes, history and motivation behind the organisation. Beautiful spot to spend time time with food and drinks available from the bar. A unique connection to Laos culture through textilesThank you so much for taking the time to review your experience at our Living Crafts Centre. We're delighted to read that you not only enjoyed your weaving class but also felt a unique connection to Laos through its textiles. We encourage you to share about it as we're always happy to welcome more visitors with whom we can share our love for Lao textiles! - Grace M1 contribution1/2 day silk weaving classI had an amazing time during my silk weaving class. I chose the half day option and it was perfect. My guide and teacher were really knowledgeable and kind. They showed me all the steps from winding the bobbin to changing the thread for the pattern. I was really pleased with my silk piece and I learnt so much in the process. The skill of the weavers is so impressive, I really appreciate the work that goes into making a woven fabric. I also had a great chat with my guide about his life and mine. I would definitely recommend this class for anyone who wishes to learn about the silk weaving process as well as the significance of textiles in the diverse Laos cultures.Thank you so much for the detailed review and for recommending our class to fellow travelers! We're delighted to read that trying weaving yourself and talking with our team gave you a better appreciation of all the work that goes into the art of weaving. - Isabel M6 contributionsAmazing experience and sweet souvenirs to take homeI loved this experience. My tour guide Oun was so funny and kind and was so helpful in teaching me, along with my master weaver Bee. They were very knowledgeable and I learned a lot by being there. The center looks out over a beautiful landscape eight by the river and when I was breaking from my weaving experience it was amazing to gaze out into. They half-day weaving class was just perfect since I (and my back) was very tired by the end of the day. It's tedious learning to weave but so worthwhile for the amazing souvenir you have afterwards. I loved this experience and would highly recommend it to others.Thank you so much for the detailed review and kind words, Isabel! It is truly appreciated. We're glad to read that you enjoyed your time with us and now have a beautiful souvenir of Laos to bring home. And we could not agree more about Oun, he is indeed very funny and kind! I only made purchases at the shop here & briefly saw the property - but what a hidden gem this place is. The shop at the craft centre is small but filled with amazing handicraft. The staff at the craft centre location shop are very helpful & provide such great customer service. They were able to place items on hold for me at their other location in city center where I also made several purchases. Can’t wait to display these items at home & share some items as gifts. Thank you!Thank you so much for your kind words (and 5-star review) Danielle! It is truly appreciated. - Daniel Y8 contributionsA great workshop!I attended the half-day weaving workshop with Oun as the guide (helping out with translation) and Lin as the teacher. They were both very friendly and helpful, and I enjoyed learning about the weaving process and getting to do it myself. Makes you respect the art that goes into it! We also had a tour of the facility and saw artists at work creating exceptionally complex weaving patterns. I attended on my own and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend!Thank you so much for the 5-star review Daniel and for pointing out that the activity can also be enjoyed as a solo traveler. - Sandra B134 contributionsA very educational trip to visit! A “must!”We never would have known about this incredible place, had it not been for a lady from Australia that lives in LP now. So educational to learn how the silk worms produce the silk, how it is dyed and watch the weavers make the fabric! We were both very impressed!Dear Sandra, thank you so much for your five-star review and kind words. It is truly appreciated. - Sarah SFife, United Kingdom19 contributionsParadise on the Mekong RiverWow, just wow! This place is paradise on the Mekong River. It's actually a social enterprise with the craft centre situated in the resort. We stayed in the Oma villa and it was perfect. We ate and drank at the restaurant which was the best food we had during our time in Laos. The staff speak very good English, are very knowledgeable and also helped us arrange transport. The resort runs a complimentary tuk tuk into the main streets of Luang Prabang as the resort is situated just outside the centre, so this tuk tuk service was very useful. They have a beautiful shop on site, selling the items which are made there, so I bought a little memento to remind ourselves of this wonderful place.Thank you so much for your five-star review! It is truly appreciated. We're glad to read that you made use of our free tuk tuk and we'll make sure to share your kind words with our team and the chef! We hope to welcome you again in the future. The room was so comfortable and colorful, like the rest of the establishment. The meals we had were delicious, particularly the dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the special views of the Mekong and the crafts store. The service was impeccable. It's slightly outside of the old city but the free pink tuk tuk makes up for it.Thank you so much for your five-star review! We're delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay with us! Ock Pop Tok living crafts centre was a short 2.5 Kms ride by a TukTuk costing 10,000 Kips.Visitors are given a "FREE TOUR" of the silk and textile manufacturing process of the centre which also conducts classes for women in the spinning and manufacturing of silk cloth. My guide Mr Steven took me through the large palatial estate beginning from the "Silk Worm Larvae", cocoons section to the section which employs women for manufacturing silk cloth. This locale is situated on the banks of the Mekong river and besides the 'Silk Manufacturing section" also has a plush cafe called the "OCK POP TOK Silk Road Cafe".A hotel also exists in the estate with the minimum rentals being U.S $ 65/day for a single room and Us $ 100 +/Day for a independent cottage style house facing the Mekong river. If you intend splurging at a good scenic locale in Luang Prabang then "OCK POP TOK" is the place to live in

My wife and I spent a late afternoon to early evening at this Crafts Centre. The staff and volunteers were quite knowledgeable, creative and helpful. Some of them were local craftspersons (women) who explained different aspects of the process of weaving, tye dyeing, making silk, and batik and the materials related. We did a tye dye silk scarf and some weaving. We had a great time and enjoyed the view during sunset and happy hour.

Whilst staying at the Ock Pop Tok Mekong Villa I took part in the combination day class, which included local natural dyeing in the morning, a wonderful lunch followed by weaving in the afternoon. We could choose our own colours and designs from the wide choice. Classes are small and well taught by an array of talented local artisans. Alongside the tutorial, you are able to explore the beautiful grounds and hear about the village weaving project and other projects linked the women weavers and the development of handicraft opportunities. If you are having any doubts about whether to include this experience in your itinerary, ponder no more! Do it, and enjoy one of the highlights of your travels.

I signed up for a traditional Hmong batik class. The teacher was a woman with a lifetime of experience and a master of her craft. Each person taking the workshop left with a full understanding of the technique and a beautifully finished piece. She showed us enough to get us going and we were able to follow her lead with ease. My friend took a basket-making class and left with a perfect basket! After our class, we had a bite to eat by the water. The shuttle to/ from the downtown area made the whole exerience easy and seamless.

Dear kbeckerartist,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our batik and bamboo basket class. We are glad that you enjoyed spending time and learning with Ms. Zuzong, our resident Hmong batik artist and one of the few artisans still practicing this craft in Luang Prabang.

We spent 2 afternoons of our few days in LP in their porch restaurant! Comfortable chairs, great view, and delicious & creative (with healthy choices) food and drinks. The spring rolls were a visual delight, with different colored fruit or veggie in each one. The chef obviously is concerned with beautiful display and freshness. We also toured through the weaving areas. Helpful displays telling about the history and the process. Well done. A shop is there as well as classes for those who want to learn how to weave.

I did 3 workshops over 2 days - half day weaving, dyeing and half day batik. They were not only fantastic fun but very informative and my family and friends have been super impressed with the products I made. I will treasure the experience forever! The half days were just right for me to get a taste but I would love to stay longer next time. Take some time out of your itinerary to absorb yourself in a workshop - honestly one of the highlights of my time in Laos!

Everything about this place is amazing. The restaurant is lovely with its view of the Mekong and excellent fresh food. But more importantly, the venue is home to an artisan textile social enterprise begun in 2000. It provides a fair trade opportunity for weavers to practice and enhance their craft. It’s an amazing opportunity to learn about Lao textiles in a beautiful location.

I really enjoyed my half day silk weaving course. They taught me the process of weaving a silk tablemat gradually, and were very patient with me.
My teacher, Na Lin, was very qttentive to what I was doing and was able to help me out when I was going slightly astray and also to help me understand what I needed to do to improve.
We were guven a choice of many colours of naturally dyed silk (selecting 2) and also taught how to spool the thread.
The class is by the Mekong in a beautiful setting with lovely views. It's also set back from the main road, so one gets no road noise.
The price (at time of writing) was $48, and I think it was really good value for such a fantastic and different experience.

I had an amazing time during my silk weaving class.
I would definitely recommend this class for anyone who wishes to learn about the silk weaving process as well as the significance of textiles in the diverse Laos cultures.

We loved visiting Ock Pop on several occasions during our stay. The complimentary tuk tuk from downtown is very handy, and we enjoyed having drinks by the river, watching the weaving and exploring the tree houses. A craft fair was taking place when we visited so it was probably busier than normal, and unfortunately the restaurant wasn’t open; instead food was available from various vendors. All the products are of beautiful quality but quite expensive.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, we appreciate it. During our annual fair (which usually happens between February and March), it is indeed a bit busier than normal and unfortunately given the increased traffic, we can't offer our regular menu to visitors. But as you mentioned, we do offer other food options. Regarding our products, they might seem at a higher price point than other places because we make sure to only use the finest raw materials and pay our artisans - who we consider artists - a fair wage. We hope you understand.
