For a Buddhist this is a must see place to visit. I spent about 4 hours there in the morning. Plenty of worshippers will visit this place, mostly locals and a few "lost" tourists. Tour guides seem to try to explain the importance of the Buddha image to the tourists but in my mind most where not really interested. Men... More

This enormous fascinating pagoda is slightly different in that only men can place the gold leaf on it. Lots of devout people around and I felt a little uncomfortable as if I was prying in some places but the locals seem to accept all the tourists with good grace and in fact are happy to explain things. Usual camera fees.... More

Definitely worth going to. Very interesting ceremony with applying the gold leaf to the Buddha. This temple is very busy but not so busy that you are prevented from getting good photos. The staff is very friendly. Parking is available for your private car. Bring something to clean off your feet after you walk through this temple. No socks or... More

This golden Buddha has grown over the years as gold leaves have been placed on it. Only men are allowed to place the gold leaves or get up close to the Buddha; IMHO, old tradition that may need updating. There are other things to see besides the big golden Buddha, so it is good to walk around. Foreigners/tourists pay more... More

I had very short time while visiting this temple. The main attraction for every one is gold covered Buddha.

We went on a Saturday and it was bustling with families and locals. Plenty to see with many stalls in the grounds of the pagoda selling good and drinks as well as trinkets to buy. Inside the pagoda men were able yo apply golg leaf to the Buddha, women not allowed. Well worth a visit with lots of photo opportunities.

Once you are in Myanmar, there are hundreds of pagoda to see and each one has its own features. The Mahamuni Pagoda is special for its gold plated Buddha statue. But only men can enter to plate gold on the statue. Women can give their offers in one of many offering boxes around the pagoda. Like other pagodas in Myanmar... More

The sheer scale of the place both for religious significance and as a market place makes this a worthwhile visit. The well covered Buddha shows the devotion and there are interesting statues other exhibits to admire. Expect lots of locals as well as tourists. The former add a great deal of atmosphere to visiting.

There is a lot of gold leaf but that's the tradition. The place has other beauties if you just look around at both the floor tiles and the column tiles of the place. They are just fabulous as to is the activity of the people. It is amazing that women aren't allowed to place or go too close to the... More
