When you visit Filibe, you'll find many recommended houses to visit. You might wonder which one to choose. Among them, you can easily opt to visit these three: (1) Hindliyan House, (2) Balabanov House, and (3) Nedkovich House. Among these, Hindliyan stands out more because on the ground floor, there is a unique feature to this house – an old bathroom, one of very few in Plovdiv that had hot running water at the time.

Of all the mansions open to the public in old Plovdiv four are included in the 'Combined Ticket': Hindliyan, Nedkovich, Stambolyan and Balabanov. From the point of view of architecture they all belong to the 19th century Bulgarian Revival style, but in fact they are not too different from the way grand houses were built at that time in all the Ottoman Empire.
Often in great contrast though is the furniture, which shows that people's taste was heavily oriented towards Western Europe, especially towards Paris and Vienna. Thus one will find tables, chairs, cupboards and more done in late Baroque, Rococo or Empire style.
The Balabanov Kashta is one of the larger houses, built at the beginning of the 19th century by a weatlhy merchant. The house though doesn't bear his name, but that of the third and last owner. Completely torn down in the 1930's it was reconstructed in the 1970's - with the help of photos and drawings - according to the original plan.
Today one can get an idea of the 19th century lifestyle of Plovdiv's wealthy merchant class in the upper floor with the carved ceilings, the painted walls, the expensive furniture, the piano, while the rooms in the ground floor are reserved for exhibitions, mainly of modern art.

The house is not the original one from the beginning of the 19th century, since it was demolished, but a faithful reconstruction from 1935 based on every detail of the original plans. This probably explains the great shape of the house is in. Typical for the Revival Period in Bulgaria, my personal favorites were the wooden ceilings, fine Ottoman style. The only thing I didn't like is that the house is now used to host temporary art galleries in an attempt to mix the old with the new with mixed results in my opinion

Hé Muséum is OK/ average. But the lady who is selling tickets is a total disaster - arrogant and rude, calling people "fools" in their faces. She's more suitable for a prison guard, lacking any cultural attitude!

Fortunately plans and photographs from its initial construction were available for its faithful rebuilding in the 1970s. Finished around the start of the 20th century for a wealthy merchant, it subsequently fell into decay and was demolished in the 1930s.
Today it’s a gorgeous exemplar of the National Revival style. Quite expansive it has delightful elegant rooms, comfortably furnished.
Numerous works of art are spread throughout, with the splendid backdrop of the gorgeous home.

This house is located in the hilly part of the Old Town near the Roman Theatre and the Ethnographic Museum. It is set in a lovely nineteenth-century house in Bulgarian Revival style with a nice courtyard garden. However, there really isn't very much to detain you at the Balabanov House.
The interior has been turned into an art gallery for 20th century modernist art from local painters. None of them did much for us, but we are certainly not experts. However, we did think that period Bulgarian furniture might have been better suited to the building than a collection of modern oil paintings with no explanatory captions whatsoever. In short, this place is far from unmissable.

Amazingly reconstructed house of original owner, Hadji Panayot Lampsha (tailor merchant and usury businessman) and at the end of a wood products merchant Balabanov, whose name it bears.
This one has always been opened and easy to get in.

The house is impressive. I would advise putting signs in separate rooms to describe what we are seeing anyway

Very predisposing atmosphere for literary readings, book presentations, lectures, chamber concerts and performances. Spacious garden. Rich history. The staff is courteous and helpful in every way. No food or drink other than water is brought into the house itself in order to protect the house museum from pests.
