About
The Small Basilica is part of the serial site The Bishop’s Basilica and the Late Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace (on the Tentative List of the Republic of Bulgaria for UNESCO since 2018). It consists of The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis, the Small Basilica and the Late Antique Irene Building. They were built and functioned during the 4th–6th centuries and showcase the peculiar mosaic heritage of Philippopolis. The Small Basilica is a three-aisled basilica with an apse at the east end, a chapel added to the south end, and floors decorated with polychrome mosaics with a total area of approximately 200 sq.m. With its cross-shaped piscina and picturesque figural representations, the baptistery is the only monument of its kind in Bulgaria that has so far been conserved and displayed.

Interesting object discovered by accident while digging the basics for cooperation. Many beautiful mosaics, there is a well-preserved baptismal font / Baptistery in the Cross Forum /. On the second floor, be sure to sit down to watch the two films about Plovdiv and the region. extra for photos .. 5 more BGN

When we went there, we were told that the museum was called the museum. It was very nice. At one time we went on glass, there was a cross in which children were baptized. After we climbed the stairs of glass and then we gathered around a TV to watch what sights were in Plovdiv. It was nice.

Fabulous small early Chritian baptistery, with beautiful mosaics, a charming baptismal basin and some lovingly displayed artefacts. Has an intimate feel which induces a sense of contact with the past people for whom this structure and its purpose was so special. Well worth the minor trek alongside a busy road to get there.

A real jewel, wonderful antique mosaics, very well preserved and displayed.
Accessible on foot from the center (10-15 min) or by car; there's a free parking lot (6-8 cars) for the visitors. Otherwise there's a paid parking zone on the boulevard in front.

A must visit with good Roman mosaics. As the name suggests it is smaller than the Bishops Basilica but well worth a 45 minute visit. I approached from the bottom of Old Town down the road immediately behind the East Gate Roman remains but the road stops short of the red museum building and one has to take a path around the end of a block of flats. An easier way is to follow the main road from the Bishops Basilica.

It is located near Knyaginya Maria Luiza boulevard at the East from the Old Town. There are wonderful mosaics inside. You can also watch movies about Plovdiv and its history at the balcon inside the museum.
Hosts are very kind and helpful.

NOT THE SMALL BASILICA; The NEW, HUGE BISHOP”S BASILICA of PHILIPOPPOLIS. This is the most wonderful example of mosaics I have ever seen. I think people are mixing the small basilica with this one. This one is in a large, blue building and costs 12 lev to get in. One can wander around at will, walking on glass walkways over and around the most amazing mosaics I have ever seen. It is truly breathtaking. All information is in Bulgarian and English and is incredibly informative….as are the staff. There is a small, unimaginative shop at the end, selling a few items, but so much more could be made of the shop, and so many more things sold. However, it was a fabulous experience even though it was difficult to find. It was not signposted anywhere and many locals didn’t seem to know where it was. But do go. You’ll not regret it.

Visited today as part of the 19 leva ticket for 5 venues. Easily located, well preserved mosaics, friendly staff, very informative videos at the end. Left via the "gypsy" area, no issues, felt safe at all times, quick short cut back to old town.

Very cute little basillica remnants where the little deer and two pigeons with a Christian symbolism attract the most attention.
