Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hindliyan house has the best interior and also the. Biggest of the houses with the painted alafranga in most of the upper rooms.
The steam room was also impressive and different to the other house. It also had old furniture.
The 1st living was absolutely huge with lovely rose water fountain aromatising the floor.
This did not have an art gallery inside it closed for lunch between 123-1300. And open Tuesday to Sunday 0930-1800.

Only a garden separates (or connects) the Balabanov House with the Hindliyan House, the only mansion open to the public in old Plovdiv, whose outer walls are painted in blue. Otherwise it looks like a typical Ottoman and Bulgarian Revival style house with the protruding upper floor.
The house was built in the 1830's for the Armenian trader Stepan Hindlyan, who had connections to India, thus his second name, deducted from 'Hindi'. The interior though is very European in its decoration and style. There are typical alcoves to be seen, here called 'Alafranga' (Frankish, thus European style) and also beautifully decorated ceilings. In my view this is the most attractive of all the mansions I have seen here. All the rooms have their own character. A special feature is the marble bathroom, with floor heating and cold and hot running water (quite advanced for its time).

It's a dazzlingly beautiful house, perhaps the prettiest of them all in the old city. But, as with the others houses, once you're inside its a case of wander and wonder. Why can't they simply put a little information discreetly on display for poor peasants like us to digest. There was so much I wanted to know. Perhaps if we'd been on an official tour we'd have learnt more. I saw no offer of a guide there, though I suspect it may be possible, having read some of the other reviews.
Overall, a rather frustrating experience.

Hindlian is a beautiful example of a house from the Bulgarian Revival period. As one of the few houses the preservation was quite good, so it's not completely new (as many are). It is the only house with a bathroom, that resembles a Turkish hamam. The garden is great to relax in and just have a rest.

Saw it on a tour and wow! So beautiful, I really advise to pay at the door for a tour if you are not with an organized tour because you are not going to appreciate it otherwise. Hindlian was a baller

We arrived at 17h50 and the lady in charge did not let us in as she had "already closed the register"... even though the museum was supposed to officially close at 18h00 (as said on the main door) and we had the exact change to go inside.

The House of Hindliyan is one of the most representative sample of Renaissance in Balkans in Bulgaria. It mixes a lot of different cultural elements (Ottoman, Greek, Bulgarian, Occidental, and Balkan in general) and because of this reason, the visitor here can have a first impression of the inner Balkan spirit. The stuff that impressed me most of all was the Turkish style old bath at the first floor of the house, the painting of Rialto bridge of Venice, and the sitting room with the unique furniture.

This house is kept authentic and original as the day it was built with all furniture and decorations preserved perfectly. A perfect house to step back in time and admire the beauty of the 1830’s

Always open when walking around, very beautiful interior of an originally Armenian merchant Stepan Hindliyan, making nice fortune during the Ottoman empire, in particular with Indian.
Worth to see, in particular the upstairs decorated rooms.

Great colours outside, little worn out from the inside. House size and commodities are impresive considering the time of building it.
