We had a really interesting visit to this well maintained concentration camp museum located on the outskirts of Nis city centre. The displays were bilingual and told the stories of some of the people that passed through this transit camp. The lady who was selling the tickets spoke really good English and was helpful and eager to please. This is worth a visit if you have some time to kill in Nis!

Until I planned my trip here to Serbia, I was not aware of the large concentration camp located here. The “Red Cross” has nothing to do with what we know of the Red Cross. Seeing the writing in the walls, bullet holes where people were killed... Very somber @. Everyone needs to visit here.

If you are in Nis, the Red Cross Nazi Concentration camp is worth a visit. There are lots of artefacts that you can see and get close to. A lot of sad history that you can feel when you visit the building. I really enjoyed and would recommend.

Most of the exhibits have English text. The rooms are presented in chronological order to give an overview of the history of the camp. Yes, some exhibits are confronting but the people who suffered here deserve to have their stories preserved and remembered. Relatively small exhibition over three floors that can be covered in an hour. Only stairs and no wheelchair access. We highly recommend a visit.

I visited this place while on a private day trip from Skopje. And eventhough this wasn’t on the itinerary, but the tour guide was more than happy to take me there.
The place was closed for maintenance and so on, but the lady working there was extremely helpful. She let us in and went along with us as the guide was explaining everything to me.
The tour was amazing, but sad. We were in the place where thousands of innocent victims were killed. We saw their names, clothes, letters…. Truly heartbreaking.
Most tourists ignore this place, but it’s a must visit!

The concentration camp located in the district of Crveni Krst (Red Cross) is one of the few fully preserved fascist camps in Europe. Even today, it provides authentic testimony to the perils of the Serbian, Romani, and Jewish population, communists, numerous supporters of the liberation movement and partisans, who were incarcerated here during the German occupation of Serbia (1941-1945). Setting aside this camp from others is the fact that on 12 February 1942 there was a massive escape of prisoners here. Out of 147 inmates who attempted to flee, 105 managed to escape, while 42 died along the way. After this successful escape, and another in December 1942, the camp became a real venue of death.

This is worth the visit for a better understanding of how the Nazi transit camps operated and how Jews, Roma and Serb Partisans suffered. Upper floor solitary confinement rooms with barbed wire are disturbing reminders of the horrors here.

Really interesting place. I was lucky to have a friend from Nis to provide translation and explanation as little was posted in English, but even without this it would've have been well worth it. Also highly recommended is the simple little pub right next door to the camp (same side of the street, on the right if you are facing the camp), where the German soldiers would go during the war and where one of the patrons of the bar shared with us the story of his Serbian grandfather having been one who of the ones who was shot while attempting to escape.

September 2013 is not correct, WE visited this camp years ago, when it was still Yugoslavia. Stayed with friends in their home at Nis. Their mother was in the resistance and had been in that camp. It is very impressing, especial when you visit it with the daughters of a former prisoner. Special when you hear the story of the last days. At the last few days, the prisoners found out that they all will be executed e few days later. One night they start running to the barber wire and the machineguns. The first were killed but they continue with running. In the end there where about 250 people killed, but about 500 escaped.
