- Marigold74Kokkola, Finland16 contributionsCutest little townWent on a day trip from Dubrovnik, and found the Old City of Kotor much more endearing and interesting than Dubrovnik itself! Loaded with history and interesting corners. Unfortunately we had too little time there to go around the city walls on the mountain side, it could have been spectacular. Next time with more time (and less heat!)Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- BerthakiArequipa, Peru280 contributionsNice castle, good environmentThe walled city is a very beautiful construction in the medieval style. Although it's a very touristic place, it doesn't look too crowded. The shops are well organized and the prices are not expensive. However, as the parkings are full all the time, you have to walk a lot to reach the city center.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 October 2023

It sits at the end of a dramatic bay with steep mountains around it. For hikers and fitness, you can climb the stone walls for an aerial view. Kotor is best experienced on a boat through the Bay where you can see Our Lady of the Rocks and other sites.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 November 2023

- starlightShanghaiVictoria, Canada4,611 contributionsLoved the Old Town from within!Viewing the Old Town from the mountain top or from the sea certainly has its own appeal. For me, however, it was the back lanes! I love these old cobblestoned lanes. What’s even nicer is that in low season, one can enjoy these narrow back lanes without the endless clutter of dawdling tour groups! Cruise-ship visitors can also be avoided by simply checking the local port schedule. Absolutely loved the Old Town ‘from within’.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 December 2023

The old stone-paved streets full of cafes with national drinks and restaurants with excellent seafood and service bring you back to the past. Whenever I come to Kotor, I have the feeling that I want to stay there forever next to the walls that are washed by the sea waves. - johnwoolmer79Church Stretton, United Kingdom32 contributionsFull of interst...and people. At the head of the stunning Bay of Kotor, the Old Town within the imposingly high & thick limrstone walls is a fairly small atea that is very walkable. The four gates give access but the key thing to remember is to keep the towering backdrop mountains behind you when you wsnt to leave. The many squares are full of history, polished flagstones and old buildings. Many have long iron stays on their walls to signify they have survived previous earthquakes. Many of the squares are homes to sunbathing cats but there are few benches to rest on as local eateries vie for your custom. Cuisine is international...from fast food to classy fish restaurants. The imposing old walls built to protect Kotor cling on to the steep mountains and zig-zag their way to the summit. The 'ladder' presents a challenging climb & descent! Well worrh spending hours here.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 March 2024

Our stop in historic Kotor, Montenegro was quite memorable. The road trip from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Kotor took us past the beautiful town of Perast and Bay of Kotor. Although teeming with visitors off a cruise ship, Kotor Old City was worth putting on a face mask now and then while with masses of people inside the numerous churches. Otherwise, exploring the Old City fortifications, streets and shops was delightful. The prices charged by businesses within the Old City were outrageous and obviously geared towards the tourist traffic. However, don't let that warning stop you from experiencing an incredible step back into history.

Old Kotor is a beautiful and very well preserved city. I would recommend arriving early as the traffic can be heavy and the queue for parking builds quickly. Parking was cheap considering how close it was to the location. There was a Cruise Ship in port so it was quite busy but not to the same level as Dubrovnik! We wondered the narrow streets and shops for hours before heading out to the waterfront and the shops. There are some incredible buildings and little boutique shops with a small Bazaar. If you are an animal lover then the Cat Park is also worth a visit and a donation.

One of the better cruise ports on the Med. The walled city is the highlight but my other reviews cover some great places to go just a few miles from the city, AND if you arrive by cruise during the day or leave in daylight, the passage is fantastic with close in Mountains on either side. Give yourself at least 2 hours to walk the walled city once, then hit the shops, restaurants next. Like many places in the med, there are cats everywhere so bring some cat snacks with you! They have awesome Cat ceramic statues that go on a shelf or fireplace mantle that are really unique. One other aspect of this being a cruise port...it's a very short walk to the walled city from the ship...5 min. max.

First of all, Kotor is worth traveling to see. It is preserved because it sits on a small patch of land at the head of a fjord and up the steep surrounding rock mountains and could not grow. Second, some modern army did not destroy it.
Kotor is a 600 year old, hardscrabble fortified city, the likes of which most of us have never see. The pavement is very uneven, but the old town is flat. HOWEVER, there are plenty of opportunities to impersonate a mountain goat and visit the chapel and defensive walls and towers up the mountain. Oh, yes, have a local beer.

Ambiance:
Loved the city, super safe, clean and it does not feel like a tourist trap.
Parking:
We drove there and parking is very simple and not expensive.
Food:
Lots of restaurants, ice cream places, and small bars.
Extra:
Outside the city walls, there is the Mariana where you can see all the different types of yats including the big cruisers!

We visited the old city area in Kotor whilst on a one day stop in the city on a Thursday in June. Arriving on a cruise ship, having never been here before, we had opted to explore the port on our own due to its close proximity to the ships berth.
The town of Kotor sits at the foot of a mountain range and is protected by its impressive Venetian fortified walls which give it an almost fantasy stronghold appearance. The Old town sits within these walls and the visitor exploring them will find themselves in a labyrinth of narrow streets and passages occasionally opening out into small squares. In these streets you will find all manner of interesting churches, cafes and bars, shopping outlets and some photogenic architecture.
One bonus if you are a cat lover is the colony of feral cats that inhabit the streets and there is a sanctuary in the centre of the town where cats are fed and watered by a local charity.
The visitor is also advised to visit the fortifications for the outside of the walls if only to marvel at the imposing gateways built to give protected access to the town. If you are feeling athletic, the walk up the stairs to the castle high up on a mountain may be if interest though we did not attempt this because of the heat.

Disclaimer: I love a medieval city inside an old city wall and Kotor is as fine as an old medieval city gets. The old city features an extensive network of Main and narrow alleys that wind and connect in no discernible pattern. There are western shops, local shops, numerous places to eat and several historic buildings including several churches. Kotor old city and the adjacent Kotor bay, just by themselves, or sufficient reason to visit Montenegro.

This is a lovely, old, walled city. Take a circular route around the streets and squares - the town is small and the tour will not take long. While checking out the neighborhoods, visitors can see old villas, take in the scents of street eateries, and peek in the many small shops. The old and new Orthodox churches are important places to visit. Other buildings, such as the cathedral, are closed as they are still being repaired after the last earthquake.
With little effort, the partial walls of the city can be walked. If one has a lot of energy, the wider bounds of the area are also walled. An energetic person can scale the side of the mountain and visit the cliffside church.
This is a small, pleasant, quaint medieval city. We arrived via transport boat which was a leisurely way to see the scenic surroundings and also gave us a wonderful view of the waters. The city and the inlet are both world heritage sites. We left via bus which is a more direct way of accessing the city.

I came to Kotor via a tour company in Dubrovnik (Croatia). Whilst I was only here for a few hours, I felt I needed more time. To reach the top of Kotor's fortifications I needed another hour (at least). I made it 1/3 way of the mountain and stopped at the Church called "Our Lady of Remedy". The 30c heat did not help :)
The name for the Church came from its legacy to be able to heal people from the plague, though I suspect the plague finished off many before they reached it.
The design of the town was in a way to confuse those who invade it, as a tourist, I was certainly confused and lost my direction more than once.
Due to time limits I wish I could have stayed longer, I would certainly visit the town again.
Price wise in the town, I didn't feel it was "cheap" despite the Country having a low cost of living. The prices I paid for food were the same as if I was back home.

Kotor is one of the most popular places to visit in Montenegro. Every year thousand of foreigners come here on a vacation, so I can say that Kotor is very important for Montenegro`s economy. Kotor old city is a very cool place with a lot of old buildings, narrow streets and, it can, probably, sound funny, cats. When I was walking by the streets of Old city I was feeling like I`m back in time in 20th or 19th century and this experience was great and I can say I have never felt something like this before. Another great thing about Kotor is mountains, here I tried hiking for the first time in my life, it was quite difficult to climb to the mountain and i took probably 3 or 4 hours, but it worth it because the view from here was beautiful and it gave me memories for the rest of my life. So, I would highly recommend this place to everyone

Can you get a bus from Budva old town to Kotor. If so which one and how long does it take?
Written 18 June 2024
Bis station is located near the Old Town of Kotor, and the bus station in Budva is 2-3 km from the Old Town of Budva. The bus will usually run for 30 minutes, but it depends on the traffic, it can take 1 hour in the crowd in front of the Budva or Kotor tunnel.

If anyone is visiting Kotor old town, I’m looking for details of some of the street performers/musicians to play at my wedding in Perast. When I visited Kotor there were a few people playing violins ect but I didn’t think to get any contact details and I’m struggling to find any Info online

Peggy - Do you think a "tour" or "excursion" is necessary? Or is going off on your own feasible and safe?

Hi Is there a cost to enter Old Towne? Several tours mention that their fee includes entrance fee to old town, but am wondering if there's a fee if I want to wander the town on my own? Thanks!
Written 7 February 2019
HI
You do not need to pay to walk round the town .
If you want to walk /hike up to the ruined castle on the top then there is a fee of 5 or 7 euros. BUT ::: if you start hiking up before 7.30 am you could avoid the fee ...as the the guys on the gate are not there so early.
Fantastic walk / take plenty of water / great view from the top .
Enjoy
