- Jo RWirral, United Kingdom269 contributionsGreat Old TownKotor old town is lovely , steeped in history with great views over the harbour . All the squares and alleyway are packed with bars, shops , restaurants, icecream parlours which are unreal and lovely gift shops and a mini bazaar. You can walk around the walls of the town or just outside you book all kinds of tours on and off the water. It can be very busy when the cruise ships are in and i would imagine in high season too as its quite compact. Very pretty with great views.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California17,533 contributionsLovely Old Town, but Full of Tourists and SouvenirsYou will want to spend some time wandering the old city, the narrow streets and the open plazas. You will find a lot of places to eat and drink, and you will find a lot of souvenir stands that sell the same junk. And you will find a lot of tourists as this city has been discovered. Worth the trouble. Lovely.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024
- Wei Bing LIpoh, Malaysia454 contributionsA Smaller Version of Dubrovnik Old Town, but just as Fascinating! My Uncle & I visited Kotor for the first time in June 2024. We had visited Dubrovnik and the Old Town there just a few days prior to arriving in Kotor, as we were on a cruise holiday. On the day we were here, there were 4 cruise ships in the harbour, including ours! The Kotor Old Town is a smaller version of Dubrovnik's Old town: full of eateries and souvenir shops, but Kotor has walls that run up the mountains behind the Old Town, which look a bit like the Great Wall of China! We didn't have time to walk up those walls on the mountains but it looked very challenging. Kotor seems to be a magnet for tourists nowadays, which is good for the local economy.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 July 2024

Cruise ships deposit people in the Old Town and it becomes overcrowded. Already a knock on effect on prices of food and drink. Get there soon before it's one long queue!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 August 2024

We visited Kotor Old Town twice. First we arrived by ship with a group and we had very little time to explore this rich historical town. We returned in two days by bus and spent more time there. It’s located in the corner of the bay of Kotor. The Old Town has preserved its typical 12th-14th century Mediterranean architectural style. I like its narrow streets, small squares and nice churches. It is a UNESCO World Heritage sight, I think a must-see place.

The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. It is located on the Bay of Kotor, one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. Some have called it the southern-most fjord in Europe, but it is a ria, a submerged river canyon. Together with the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovćen, Kotor and its surrounding area form an impressive landscape. Absolutely majestic scenery in every direction. The town gates were built in the 16th century and fortification still stand looping through the old town and mountains. Lovely small town to walk around, shop and stop for a snack.

A medieval old town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovćen.
Its charm is winding streets and squares in the old town, also has several Romanesque churches, including Kotor Cathedral. The surrounding views of the fjords and fortress are beautiful.
It's probably not worth staying overnight (being located in the Gulf of Kotor there are only about 5 hours of sunshine a day), and to be honest, the shops are all selling fake designer fashion, bags, and shoes. This was disappointing and really lowered our experience of the old town. We visited just after tourist season and a majority of the hotels and restaurants were closed, also due to the pandemic.
After travelling Croatia and being spoilt by Rovinj, the most magical old town, pristinely clean and maintained, full of life, a strong community, fantastic food and views of the Adriatic Sea, you would be better to enjoy the other delights of Montenegro.
Just feels a bit soulless, unfortunately, the current times have impacted Kotor Old town dramatically.

In search of history, that was us, and our goal was seeking the Medieval relics of Old Town Kotor. The Old Town is triangular-shaped, not terribly large, and the squares are repositories of some mighty fine old structures.
The coats of arms (or family emblems) probably could tell a tale or two about the people who lived here, what they lived through, and the hiccups along the way. But for us tourists, out on a stroll, all we can do is marvel at the legacy these people and their dwellings lift behind.
Kotor is a delightful Old Town with so many reminders of the past.

As part of a tour we wandered around Old Town, getting a potted history of the area. We were then able to wander around at our leisure and able to explore the alleys a bit better.
The only things that may be a problem for some are a) the amount of stray cats around and b) the smell coming from the drains which is pretty pungent.
That said, it's a fascinating area with lots of history.

So much beauty in this coastal town. Very busy but gorgeous 17th and 18th century palaces around the square. Cute shops and I spent a week here visiting family. Good eats around the area and the views are priceless.
