Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

During our summer holiday we visited Pula as usual, as it is the largest city in Istria and very close to Medulin, where we stayed.
This time we hiked to Kastel, a lovely hilltop with an ancient fortress overlooking the city's harbor, giving you a 360-degree view of Pula.
The museum, which we once visited, is definitely worth your time and money, and describes the history of Pula from its ancient origins. Various weapons used to protect the city are also on display, as several pictures and inscriptions.
Overall a lovely attraction.

We decided to visit as we had a couple of hours before going to the airport.
We entered via the tunnels on the lower level, the tunnels are very long with pictures and information on the tram in the city and why the tunnels were formed. The best part of the tunnels is the amazing coolness which is a welcome break from the heat outside.
The next level is short and there is information on the war effort/prison.
The top level gives access to the city view, amphitheater and harbour.
The top can be accessed for free if you wish to walk up to the top. Otherwise for the fee of entering the museum (40 kunas) there is a lift.

The thing that I loved most about Pula was the contrast of an ancient Roman city mixed with the remains of communist Yugoslavia, and everything else in between. The Kastel would fall into the "everything else in between" category. This was built in the 17th century. There's a small museum inside that we didn't have the chance to go into. Instead we walked around the whole perimeter appreciating the 360 degree views of the city and admiring the architecture of the fort. On one hand, if you've seen one historic fort or castle, this place isn't overly impressive. But if you want a bird's eye view of Pula, then this is the place to go to for that. There are excellent views for photographers up here. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but if you're already there, and have the time, then the views are worth it.

We went there during golden hour, the view from the walls was amazing, the best in the whole town. Inside the Kastel are museum and its history, but there was an opening to the film festival so we couldn't see them but the entrance was free. Definitely see it on the sunset.

I entered through the bottom (one of the Zerostrasse tunnels) and enjoyed a wander of an hour or so up through the second set of tunnels and to the top. Lots of mostly small sets of displays (the early 20tg century tram; WW I history; life in the fort; 19th century naval history; football in Pula). None blew me away, though the sound and light related to WWI (in the upper tunnels) was quite neat. But cumulatively, combined with nice views, I thought it well worth the trip.

I would say it is a nice place but do not have high expectations. There are a few rooms with small exhbition telling the History of this fortress. A lot is related to Austro-Hungarian times. They have explanations in English Croatian German and Italian. Then you have some kind of view of the city but it's not completely unblocked. You should climb on top of the small tower. Still I was not so impressed by the view.

This place is huge and the view from the highest tower is amazing. When you first arrive here after your visit of the Arena, I'd suggest walking around it first before you go inside. Going around the fortress will take a few minutes longer than you'd think but it'll be worth it.
When you go inside make sure to get a ticket for the basement levels as well. It's no extra charge and you'll experience the military life in it a little bit more.

This is great place to get amazing 360 degree views of Pula and will be particularly good for those interested in these types of historic sites.
Our only negative comment would be the staff. The lady at the ticket counter was unfriendly and unhelpful. We were hoping to enjoy a drink inside and soak up the views but despite being literally around the corner from the onsite bar, she didnt know if there was even a bar, or whether it served alcohol.
The bar was cash only which meant they ended losing money from us.
Theres also a lack of seating around the areas to truly relax and enjoy your surroundings but still got some memorable pictures non-the-less.

Unfortunately, the people of Pula do not take care of their historic sites. This place was littered with broken glass from alcohol bottles - everywhere. It seems to be the place for drinking late at night. It's right behind the Archaelogical Museum, just walk around and up. When you get to the front of the fortress, there's another museum inside but we didn't go in. That's when I noticed that it's possible to drive up to the top as well.
