The Dominican Monastery (Croatian: Dominikanski samostan) is a religious complex from the 13th century which today houses a museum with works of art and artifacts, among other things. For those with a Dubrovnik Pass, admission costs "only" €4, otherwise it is significantly more expensive. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
If we had to choose between visiting the Dominican Monastery and the Franciscan Monastery, we would choose the Franciscan Monastery because we thought it was more beautiful and worth seeing.

The monastery and its rooms are fairly small, especially since the church portion was closed for renovations when we visited. However, the entrance fee was low (€3) and it was not crowded inside. We enjoyed the garden-like cloisters with their cool and quiet corridors, and were able to explore several rooms of off them with paintings, especially several of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. We only stayed for about 30 minutes but enjoyed our visit.

Start the Citadel Walk from the entrance in front of the Proche Gate and the roof of the monastery approaches immediately below. It had a bell tower so it looked somewhat like a religious institution, but its simple stone structure and unadorned exterior made it look like part of a city wall. Incidentally, the bell tower is called St. Luke's Tower and is said to be one of the oldest fortified towers protecting Dubrovnik since the 13th century. It is said to have been integrated with the walls due to its strategic position near the port. There seems to be much to see in the monastery, including a huge Gothic cross, but there was no time to visit.

We enjoyed our visit here. The staff is friendly and helpful. The cloisters are nice and the museum has a few nice paintings and relics. Entry fee is very affordable at 3 euros per person and credit cards or cash are accepted. Unfortunately the church is closed for renovation.

The church is closed for renovations which meant it was a much smaller area to visit.
We approached the ticket sales area and were sorting out the correct money when the lady selling tickets barked at us that she didn’t accept euros. I explained that we weren’t planning to pay in euros we were just getting the correct money ready. She then said she didn’t accept anything smaller than 5 krunas. We had a one kruna coin together with two two kruna coins which she refused to accept. I asked if they were legal tender but she ignored me and snatched two five kruna coins out of my hand, An altogether incredibly rude and bad tempered response to us. Our visit to a place of Christian worship was spoilt by her attitude.
The cloisters are beautiful and the paintings really lovely but given the church was shut it wasn’t good value for money.

This is a beautiful building with a lovely peaceful courtyard, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the old town for a break. We visited with the Dubrovnik pass and it only cost €4. The architecture is fantastic and there are a couple of small exhibits with items on show to view as well.

The Dominican Monastery is a small museum containing historical roman catholic artefacts.
There are some beautiful old items but i think they could have done a lot more to explain the context or history of the exhibits.
Worth having a look at the building alone.
Included in the Dubrovnik card so worth a 30 minute visit if you have the card.

The monastery built between 1301 and 1315 in Gothic style. The building was damaged during an earthquake in 1667 and was rebuilt. Romanesque parts have been preserved but the mixture of Gothic and southern Renaissance styles that dominates.
Many works are preserved like the booklet of St. Thomas Aquinas. The museum of sacred arts exhibits a collection of ancient works, paintings, sculptures and many manuscripts.

This monastery bell tower is a major landmark in the Old City it took two centuries to complete. Building first began on the monastery back in 1301 and is part of the citys outer wall leading to the Ploce Gate.
Like so many buildings in the city, the monastery was partly rebuilt after the earthquake of 1667. The monastery’s Gothic cloister (1456-83) was designed by the Florentine architect Maso di Bartolomeo, its cloister has a Mediterranean garden and well, that during the 1991 war, provided water to 50 percent of the city’s bombarded population.
Today, the monastery is a museum, and unfortunately we were not able to visit due to it being closed for renovation, but it is said that it holds many religious paintings, artifacts, jewelry and other items from Dubrovnik’s history.
TIP: When the Museum is open check the painted crucifixes it is said to be one of the largest in Europe, at 500 cm tall.

A former Dominican monastery, now open to all visitors. There is not much to see. You can walk through the cloister and the small inner courtyard and visit the small museum. There are many cult objects and gold jewelry, some old books, paintings. It is beautiful, but not out of the ordinary. The air is cooler under the arches of the cloister. You need about 30 minutes for the visit.

what days & times is Dominican Monastery open in August 2017?
Written 10 May 2017
I did not go inside the monastery last time I visited because I only got half a day so I was not aware of their opening hours. I checked on the net for you and apparently it is open from 9am to 6pm (5pm in the winter). I suppose august is not considered winter. But do try to check with your travel agent if any as I believe most of these attractions do not open everyday of the week and besides, it is prudent to check if they would be under any renovation around your time of visit. Wish you a good time in the old town. It is definitely worth a visit!

Dear Sir;
Is there a staff at the Dominican Monastery, or anyone around that knows any of the late 1800's early 1900's history of the monastery. Specifically, we are looking for information about a young boy who was taken in by the monks in a monastery in Dubrovnik and became a very capable translator for them around this aforementioned time period. He left around the age of 18 and came to America. My Grandson is his Great, Great Grandson and is looking for information about his Great, Great Grandfather. Any information that can be provided is greatly appreciated. We will be traveling to Dubrovnik in late June and would like to visit and tour the monastery where my Grandson's Great, Great Grandfather lived during the formative period of his life.

Hello,
There were staff there who might be able to answer some of your questions although I'm not sure how much they offer in terms of tours etc.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
