Not having time to prepare a list of must-see sites before arriving in Dubrovnik for a 16-day guided tour of four Balkan countries, I came across a metal grid encasing a stone carving. Since it’s in the middle of Luža (Luca) Square near the end of the main street, Stradun, in the medieval Walled City. Extreme age was obvious. Erected in 1418, it features Knight Orlando. Legend has it that Orlando assisted denizens of Ragusa (the Roman name for Dubrovnik) defeat invaders of the Middle Ages and helped Dubrovnik remain a free trade city-state. I learned that much damage was caused by Serbian bombardments in the early 1990s following the breakup of Yugoslavia, which included Croatia and Serbia. Orlando Column (Stup) earns my high rating in that citizens of Dubrovnik have sacrificed much to restore the UNESCO walled city and significant features of its past. Living near Orlando, Florida, the guide asked if the central Florida city was named for Knight Orlando. Who knows?

The Orlando Column (Croatian: Orlandov stup) stands on Luza Square in the heart of Dubrovnik's old town. It shows the Dubrovnik Roland as a symbol that Dubrovnik was a free city with corresponding city rights. Unfortunately, extensive renovation work is currently taking place, so you can't see much.

This is a modest column and statue at the end of the main street in the old town. There was work being done on it while we visited, a restoration. So we could not get a good look at it. I'm sure it will be lovely after the work is completed.

This iconic Column located at Luza Square in front of Sponza Palace in now celebrating special 600th year anniversary as symbol of freedom. The beautiful stone Column with image of a medieval knight is a source of inspiration for many ages. This was the area where festivities, official ceremonies like announcing edicts, folk performance were held. The forearm of the Knight was the official linear measure of the earlier Republic. As I was staying in one of the hotels on the bylane of Old Town, I could enjoy the grandeur of this place in late evening and early morning.

The iconic Orlando’s Column in the very heart of the Old City of Dubrovnik is currently under reconstruction. You can hardly see it as the stone pillar is enclosed with protective scaffolds.
However, you can get to know more info about Orlando’s column in one of the areas inside the Sponza Palace as there’s an exhibition being held.

Located in Luca Square, in front of St Blaine Church is Orlando’s Column. Erected in 1418, this centrepiece of the old city is under going some significant restoration works. Still a very important piece to the history of this city.

We like this Column very much. Unfortunately it is cracking and now it is being refurbished and not clearly visible due to scaffolding around it.

The 2nd of July , and still under cover (and renovations ?) . A bit disappointing , but the Luza square , St. Blaise Church , the Little Onoforio 's Fountain , the Bell/Clock Tower and Sponza Palace - do compensate .
Maybe on our next visit .
