About
Often called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar", this hilltop medieval fortress sits perched outside the city walls, on a promontory overhanging the Adriatic Sea. Game of Thrones fans will recognize this as the Red Keep in King's Landing. Catch your breath after the steep climb up, enjoy the breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town and West Harbor, and wander the imposing stone corridors and patios. Take a tour to dive deep into the rich history, or a Game of Thrones-themed one for an extra dose of fantasy. Save by getting a city pass that includes entry to Fort Lovrijenac and other sites in Dubrovnik. – Tripadvisor

- Zoe B3 contributionsStunning ViewsThe views from the top of the fort were stunning, and well worth the steep climb up to get them. Be sure to take a camera as there are plenty of photo opportunities! We visited whilst on a walking tour, and therefore had talks from the guide which gave us lots of information about the fort. However, if you visit this on your own, I don't think there is a guide to give you this information (but you can probably buy a guide book, which I chose not to do). It's definitely worth combining a visit here with a walk around the city walls as you can get a ticket which grants you entry to both.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- SteveS1970Coventry, United Kingdom8,935 contributionsBeautiful fortThere is a steep climb to get to the entrance to the fort and we hadn’t realised that the ticket for the Old Town walls included this, but paid anyway. There were a lot of GoT yours going on and although I can’t remember specific scenes, you could see how this setting would need little alteration to fit into the storyline. Well worth looking back at the Old Town, fascinating building.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2023
- WanderingOttersonsDenver, Colorado1,475 contributionsI'm only here for the viewsThe fort itself is nothing special. Pretty basic and there's really nothing inside to see. If you're smart and you got your Dubrovnik card, then it didn't cost you anything to get in here. We came on a GOT tour so we got to add the discussion and photos from the series that made the fort a little more interesting. The best part though is definitely the views. The best views of old town from the top of the fort for sure. Worth the trip up all the stairs to go inside.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 December 2023
- Stavrialena GontzouPiraeus, Greece18 contributionsA window to the past!I had an amazing time exploring Fort Lovrijenac in Dubrovnik. The fort's rich history and the stunning views it offers are truly captivating. As a fan of 'Game of Thrones,' walking through the same spaces where the series was filmed felt surreal. I could almost picture the scenes unfolding around me. Also, a great tip for fellow travelers: with the Dubrovnik Pass, you get free entry to the fort, but remember, it's a one-time deal. Make sure to plan your visit carefully to fully enjoy this incredible place. For me, Fort Lovrijenac was more than just a historical site; it was a journey through a beloved series and a window into the past.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 January 2024
- tinaNtravelSan Jose, California2,123 contributionsBeautiful views of the walled cityThis is included in the Dubrovnik Pass and well worth a visit after walking the wall. Yes, it is more stairs, but you get fantastic views of the Dubrovnik walled city. There are several levels. The lowest levels can be accessed for free. The higher levels require the pass. Be sure to check for the staircases, as one level seemed like the highest, but actually there were more stairs, not directly in view, that you can take to the very top.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 January 2024
- PThomas1985Stourbridge, United Kingdom405 contributionsAmazing viewsWe'd visited the fort, as entry was included in the city walls ticket. If I'm honest, there's not a great deal here, but well worth spending half an hour or so wandering around and taking in the views. Aside from the walls, this is one of the best spots for views of the old town. It's worth noting that, as you walk over from the old town, there's a relatively quiet bay to enjoy!Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 May 2024
- babykongLondon, United Kingdom1,291 contributionsStunning Views.Being a massive Game of Thrones fan, Fort Lovrijenac was high on my list of places to visit whilst in Dubrovnik. I visited here as part of a GoT tour, and didn’t need to pay for entrance as I already had the Dubrovnik Pass. On that note, one of the previous reviewers marked down Fort Lovrijenac because they overheard other visitors being offered variable entrance fees. But if you’ve already bought a ticket for entry to another site, you can then pay a reduced entrance fee into selected other sites - as long as you retain your original ticket (and it’s within so many days). I know this for a fact as several people on my walking tour purchased tickets for the Fort and were told this by our tour guide. Whether or not you’re a GoT fan, the Fort is steeped in history and certainly worth visiting. The views are pretty spectacular too.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 May 2024
- T DPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania4,500 contributionsNice View from the FortWe bought the City Walls ticket and the entrance ticket to Fort Lovrijenac was included. If you don’t, the entrance fee to Fort Lovrijenac is 15 Euro by itself. Be prepared to walk up steps to get to it. Once you’re there, you get a delightful view of the Old Town. The Fort itself is not that big - probably don’t need to spend more than 30 min there.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024
- TravelBrianCOPearland, Texas950 contributionsGreat view of the cityThough you have to walk up some stairs, the view of old town make it worth it. A city pass allows access here if you purchase (in addition to the city walls and various museums). Great history presented here, as well as some Game of Thrones filming locations. Note that it is hot hot hot during the summer.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 July 2024

Fort Lovrijenac is definitely worth a walk through. It's included in the price of the city wall walk (most recently, 200 kn/$30 USD), and if you have the time, I recommend visiting it. The views of Old Town from the fort are pretty great, and the fort itself is cool. Also, at least when we were there (at the beginning of May), we had the fort practically to ourselves.
Lovely views out the old windows with wooden shutters on...the ground floor? The second floor? Anyway, you'll see what I'm talking about it you go.

For me this was the second attraction that Dubrovnik has to offer after The City Walls. Be sure that you visit The City Walls and The Fort on the same day because the ticket for The City Walls offers you free entry here. This is one of the settings where GOT was filmed so it is very likely to meet some GOT fans during the visit. The fort offers 360* views over Adriatic Sea, Old Town and the setting where King’s Landing Harbour is. The Venetians tried to build a fort on the same spot where the locals have built it but the locals did not agree with them. It is a great attraction 7 mins walk away from Pile’s Gate.

Fort Lovrijenac or St. Lawrence Fortress, is built on top of a 121-foot sheer rock that overlooks the sea in around 1038, offten called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar”.
Be warned there is no wheelchair access and the steps are pretty steep, not for the faint hearted.
The Fort is triangular shape with three terraces and two draw bridges, the walls facing the sea are 39 feet thick while the walls facing the city are 2 feet thick, and has been upgraded a couple of times due to earthquakes. Above the main entrance gate it the Latin inscription "Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro" which translates to, Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world
The fort protected the western part of Dubrovnik, against attack from land and the sea with its 20 large cannons, the largest being “Gušter” (the Lizard), which never fired a single shot, and fell into the sea when it was being moved.
When the fort was in service it had a 25-man garrison and a Commander, who was always elected from the nobility and replaced each month.
Unfortunately after a step breath taking climb, we found the entrance closed, but the view made up for it. On the way down we ran into a tour group with their guides explaining about the Game of Thrones film locations.
TIP: Fantastic place to take sunset photos of the Old City of Dubrovnik.

One of the first 'eyeful' views before heading into the walled city at Pile Gate.
Game Of Thrones site. A guide will show you many features but there is a steep climb & then stairs - but it is worth it!
If coach loads of site seers are emptying out at Pile Gate, walking up to Fort Lovrijenac will take 30 or so minutes & allow the hordes to disperse inside the walls (hopefully).

The views from the fort are simply divine. To get to the top there are approx. 300 steps but if you do it the views are worth it. You can enter free if you have a Walls of Dubrovnik pass and the fort is a lot quieter than seeing the walls. We went at around 9am - 10am in April.

The views from this Fort are impressive. There are a few locations here and nearby that were used in Game of Thrones and you will recognise them as soon as you see them.
Again the history attached to this Fort and area is fascinating and the views out to the sea and down on the Old Town are fantastic. A photographers dream.
If you have a City Wall ticket then your entrance to this landmark is free so definitely good value and worth the experience.

The Venetians already tried to build a Fort on this spot in the 11th Century to keep Dubrovnik under their power but the citizens where able to beat them to it.
It was built in just three months time and from then on constantly reconstructed.
When the Venetians returned with their ships full of materials to build the fort, they were told to return to Venice.

We had intended to do the walls of Dubrovnik but felt the 250kn entry per person was just too steep, so we thought the Fort was a good alternative. Entry here is not cheap either, 100kn per person and there is literally no information anywhere in the fort. Some A4 description pages around the place would have made a big difference and would be inexpensive. The views throughout the Fort were stunning, with some wonderful views over Dubrovnik. An enjoyable way to spend time

Fort Lovrijenac is a stunning and imposing cliff-top fort located outside the medieval walls of the Old Town. It was built to guard the western entrance to the city from the Adriatic Sea.
Steeped in legend and dubbed Dubrovnik's Gibraltar, Lovrijenac Fortress (aka the Red Keep in King’s Landing) is built on a very prominent rock outcropping, a 37m high cliff, to protect the city from a Venetian attack.
Folklore states that early in the 11th century, the Venetians attempted to build a fort on the same spot where Fort Lovrijenac currently stands. If they had succeeded, they would have kept Dubrovnik under their power, but the people of the city beat them to it.
The “Chronicles of Ragusa” revealed how the fort was built within just three months and from then on constantly reconstructed and fortified. When the Venetian ships arrived, full of materials for the construction of the fort, they were told to return to Venice.
We visited the fortress as it was included in our Dubrovnik city pass, but a ticket for the Old Town walls also includes a visit to this fort but only valid for the same day. The reviews on this site are very mixed and I agree, that although the views are amazing, I would not pay an extra entrance fee.
There was a slight climb up to the fortress entrance. As I have knee issues, I was a bit concerned whether I could make it – but I took my time while dodging those running down and I was glad that I made the effort as the views were so beautiful. There was more climbing inside the fortress as we explored the area, although there really was not much to see.
Fort Lovrijenac has a triangular shape with three terraces with parapets overlooking the sea. The sea-facing side of the fortress has walls 12 meters thick but on the land facing side, the walls are only 60 centimeters thick. This was done so that if the fort was ever taken into enemy hands, the city’s cannons could break the walls.
It was defended by ten large cannons, including the beautifully carved ‘Gušter’ (‘Lizard’) made by Ivan Rabljanin. Above the door leading into the fort is the famous inscription ‘Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro’ – ‘freedom is not to be sold for all the gold in the world.’ There are two movable bridges leading to a door to access the fortress.
Game of Thrones fans will recognise Lovrijenac Fortress as the Red Keep in King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Scenes filmed here include the tournament thrown in honour of King Joffrey’s name day in the second series. The interiors of the fortress were used as the halls of the Red Keep and the exteriors are seen in shots of Blackwater Bay, were Myrcella Baratheon is shipped off to Dorne.

This is a very easy walk compared to the walls. It is very high up but actually doesn't feel like a very look walk as there are many stop points on the way with things or see so it didn't feel like a really look walk overall.
It does have some steep steps so important to be careful climbing up.
At most I think it was an hour long activity. If your into game of thrones there maybe a bit more interest to stay longer but essentially it is a fort with views.
If you do the city walls then the price is included in that which is quite fair.
The fort itself doesn't have a lot of things to see within it as it is an empty fort with not many artefacts or things from its history.
What it does have is some fantastic sea views and also views of the town and the fort. It's worth pointing out a fair few game of thrones scenes were filmed here so if you have seen the show it is more interesting
Highly recommend it and it's easily done in an hour or so.

I just want to confirm is the hours of operation is from 8:00am-7:30pm all year or does it close early during the off season? We are heading there in late October and would like to know if that changes since nighttime goes a little early as oppose to summer.
