Overlooks the town, ominous

On clear days, get the best views from the tops of buildings. Volcano is impressive, and spookily close to the town.

Yesterday, January 26, 2017 I hiked to the top of Vulcan de Agua and back. My trip started from Guatemala City. I left at 5:20 in the morning. I reached Santa Maria De Jesus together with daybreak. I think there is no special parking or tourist center, no registration book or even information board. I parked my car in the... More

I climbed Agua from Santa Maria de Jesus, starting at 6AM. The climb took 3:15 (this is a fast pace) going up. The summit is, unfortunately, completely messed up with various antennas and small buildings. The descent took 2:10.

We were lucky enough to see Volcan de Agua erupting from a distance. I never thought I would ever see a volcano eruption in person. Maybe the coolest event I have ever witnessed!

This is quite a sight from just about anywhere in Antigua. Many years ago, the capital on Guatemala was located on the side of Agua. That predated the move of the capital to Antigua. This perfectly shaped cone is awesome to see!

I had heard that this was an "easy hike" that the view was worthwhile. And indeed, it is! The view of Acatenango and Fuego Volcanoes is awesome! But five hours walking up on winding foot path was way more than I had expected. Plus, getting to the top, it was a disappointment to find endless antennas, cinder block constructions, even... More

My husband and I stayed at a hotel beneath this majestic volcano. My son was married on a terrace within full view of the volcano. The views are spectacular!

Volcan Agua is a good hike, but not altogether easy. You will want to hike with a guide or police, as there have been some robberies.
