Quite a few of the reviews I saw for this location actually do not relate to the cathedral ruins but the Iglesia de la Merced, which is still in use and very well maintained. This site hasn’t been in use since being destroyed by an earthquake in (I believe) the 18th century. Only Q 20 entrance fee so worth a few minutes of your time.

The Cathedral of Santiago is just a 30 second walk over the road from the Central Park. It stands high above anything else in the immediate area and seems to be the real centrepiece of the city. It is beautifully illuminated at night and is festively decorated during the month of December. The interior is stunning also.

The cathedral is on the main square and is beautiful, but of even more interest are the ruins of the original grand cathedral. Upon leaving by the side door, there is an entrance to the ruins and there is a small fee. People are free to walk around the ruins and take pictures. There are state licensed guides, for a fee.

At night it lights up so beautifully! Photos just don't do it justice. During the day, the façade is still beautiful but the ruins on the other side are far superior. The sky is so blue that the white stone in contrast seems larger than life. it is amazing. There is a catacomb type thing that when you take a photo, legend has it, you can seen the spirits of the dead in little white circles. It was pretty cool.
Inside, the church is beautiful and they have a sculpture of Jesus Chist. It is constructed in such a way that when standing right in his line of vision, you can feel all the emotion and see his tears. i al a small person and choose to believe that I wasn't in the correct line of vision.
Regardless, it is very much worth going!

Loved the history of the church. We were able to visit inside and pray. Much to learn and the architecture was awesome

This church is not to be missed if visiting the city of Antigua. The ruins of the old church are immense and interesting to see. Bring your camera.

The existing cathedral is OK -- but it is only the antechamber of the original that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1776. The ruins still there suggest the glory that is now gone.

We have seen so many cathedrals all over the world. Italy, Germany, Vienna, Slovakia, Budapest, France. All were beautiful but this one was different. Damage from years of natural events have left it in need of repair. At least the part we was before entering. Inside was like a museum, with statues and artwork throughout. Fortunately the local vendors won’t bother you while you’re inside but as soon as you exit, watch out.

We visited the cathedral and the ruins on two visits. The first was on a tour of Mayan sites in the three contiguous countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. The second visit was on our most recent trip to Antigua in April of 2019.
The part of the cathedral that is in great repair is wonderful, but the real hit is around the back. You enter the earthquake damaged ruins from outside and have to use a bit of imagination to envision how they appeared before 1733. It was a huge building with spectacular plaster work. It truly shows the impressive level of craftsmanship that went into its construction. A guided tour is probably the best if you want to get the most out of your visit. Antigua is filled with ruined buildings from that 18th C earthquake, but this one allows you to walk around and view it from many angles. It’s probably geared more toward people that are lovers of historical buildings, or that can imagine the difficulty in construction of such a place without modern methods.
Pleased give it a visit. I think you’ll be amazed.
