Operating an Aquarium, Natural Science Museum, two Observatories and a Historic House, the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is a private non-profit organization located on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Aquarium: Locally-collected specimens are on exhibit. Displays are always changing and include anything from seahorses to octopuses to sharks! Get a “feel” for the local ecosystem at our touch tank, home to crabs, clams, baby horseshoe crabs, and more! Great for kids and adults alike! Natural Science Museum: A cross between a classic natural history museum, a zoo, and a science center, the Maria Mitchell Natural Science Museum is a great place to learn about the plants, animals, and birds of Nantucket. See live turtles and snakes! Loines Observatory: See distant planets, stars, galaxies and more through a telescope! Stargazing nights with our expert astronomers are a unique way to spend an evening enjoying Nantucket's clear and dark skies! Check our website for specific information about Stargazing dates and times. Historic Mitchell House: Take a trip back in time to 1800s Nantucket! Built in 1790, this typical Quaker house was acquired by the Mitchell family in 1818. The home became a museum in 1903 when the Maria Mitchell Association’s founders acquired the house to preserve the legacy of Maria Mitchell herself.

We prevailed upon Mitchell home curator Jascin Finger to open the home closed for the season. She was willing to do this so I could walk where my great, great grandmother walked two hundred years ago. The Mitchells and she were Quakers and the home attests to the challenges and accomplishments of the times. The assn. also care for other... More

The Mitchell house tour is wonderful, the aquarium has a terrific touch tank, the open nights at the observatory is a must see. Great view of Saturn's rings and the craters on the moon. I learned about the constellations and what a globular cluster was as I observed M13.

I would give this a higher rating, but the camps are $500 a week for a 1/2 day, which is prohibitively expensive for an average family. And yes, average families visit Nantucket. They do a great job on marine walks and other excursions, but it's pricey. If you get a year-long membership it runs from January to December, so you... More

Hi, thank you for your review! For ages 5-9, our half day camp programs this year were $390 for Members. Membership is a great way to get involved with the organization and offers benefits year-round. Some great benefits are unlimited free admission to all of our properties, free open nights at Loines Observatory, and discounts on programs. More

The Maria Mitchell Association has grown in its offerings. They offer 2 Observatories, an Historic House, an Aquarium, a Natural Science Museum, various nature and bird walks, lectures on scientific subjects and on-going scientific studies. It's a great organization we are proud to have joined in supporting during our latest visit.

Even on a full moon the staff made for an amazing and informative evening! We spotted a star 87 light years away...Saturn, its rings, and Titan... and an amazing close up of the moon and the sea of tranquility on the 47th anniversary of the first moon landing! And we learned what a cataclysmic variable pulsar is. Open Monday Wednesday... More

My husband's great aunt Marnie was the first Director of the MMO, so this was a must see. We arranged ahead of time for a quick visit as we were there before it officially opened for the season. The curator could not have been more accommodating, and she really knows her stuff, since she started out as a volunteer at... More
