- William HurlOntario, CanadaExtremely detailed and informativeAlthough this museum is not huge it is jam packed with displays and provides an abundance of detailed information about the Inuit and life in the Arctic region. Being born and raised in Canada a lot of the information and displays were very familiar from my high school history classes. One thing that surprised me was the similarities and cross over of our Inuit and Greenland’s Inuit population. Makes sense when you think of it, but the museum lays it out in great detail through videos and artifacts. Very well done. They do a good job explaining the settling of Greenland by the Europeans and the meshing of two completely different cultures. The museum is located right on the waterfront with very scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The morning we were there a couple of whales put on a show for us. Quite the sight. There are a couple of cafes/ restaurants near by and the museum has a nice little gift shop. Well worth the two hours we spent there.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 August 2024

We spent a couple of hours in this relatively small but very informative and detailed museum. It covered the history of the people living in this challenging part of the world from the first inhabitants, to the Vikings, to the current inhabitants. Lots of informative displays. Both exhibit items and signage. The museum occupies multiple buildings. Make sure you visit all of them. We almost missed one building. - RogerDeanDCWashington DC, District of ColumbiaWonderful Museum Highlighting the Incredible Culture of Greenland!Don't miss this amazing museum in Nuuk. For a very small country (population of 59,000), this museum is a treasure trove of this history of customs of the native Inuit people and also covers the time under Danish colonialism. The museum if flush with colorful costumes, recreation of living quarters throughout the centuries, kayaks, sled, hunting equipment, etc. It even has the mummified remains of an ancient tribe from about a century ago. This is a must do when you are in Nuuk!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 August 2024

I was fascinated with the Indigenous skin boats, including the really petite ones intended for children to practice. We were so lucky to have a guided tour, which offered an educating and exciting insight into the history of Greenland. The exhibitions are well arranged and if you are into history you (even without the a guide) easily could spend an hour or two exploring the museum. The museum is an absolute must if you are visiting Nuuk.

This is a great little museum about the history of Greenland. The majority of the artifacts are Inuit from about 1400 ad to 1900 ad. There is some information about the earlier Dorset (pre-Norse settlement) culture and the Norwegian/Danish inhabitants. The information is in English and Greenlandic (Kalaallisut). It only takes an hour or so to see everything and the museum is located next to the old colonial dock where many of the boat sightseeing tours depart Nuuk. I definitely recommend a quick visit. It is limited opening hours so check to see when it is open.

Wonderful collection of items and displays related to Greenland's history. Succinctly captured the sweep of human changes over 4,000 years -- including some of the groups that perished or disappeared. Items on display from different periods help visualize life at different times and places in the country. [I loved the magnificent ancient kayak that was found buried on a beach and carefully dug out and preserved.] Also very knowledgeable staff if you have questions or want a little deeper info about a display.

Very thoughtfully curated with artifacts from many different time periods, this museum was one of the highlights of Greenland. One could spend hours here pouring over the vast collection, laid out and presented in a way that invites exploration and further research. And of course, the mummies are a powerful sight that is not to be missed. If you are in Nuuk, make sure you give yourself at least an hour here.

Well curated exhibits, the museum also contains well preserved bodies from the 1460s which were discovered by a few young men in 1973. The kayaks and clothing and general home life exhibits were very interesting. There is a little gift shop.

This museum houses an extensive exhibition of the history of the people of Greenland from the Saqqaq people to the present day, 1000s of years. The display cases are filled with artifacts and there are brochures in English describing each piece. There is also a separate building showcasing different forms of transportation. The exhibit covers farming practices and clothing and hunting and culture. It is definitely worth a long visit.
