Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It was a normal day, I was my doing my weekly hike with my family in Dales forest when suddenly a giant red crab picked us up with his thick, strong arms. I can't lie that was the hottest red crab I have ever seen, I was blushing. He brought us back to his secret lair where he revealed he was actually planning to launch several nukes to Australia so he can do take the L on all those noob skins emu's.

Be prepared for a very long hike. But be prepared for your breath to be taken away at the end. We took a packed lunch and had a picnic at the end. Be sure to wear good walking shoes with good soles as very rocky very sharp and muddy in places. The Hugh’s falls were the best thing after the long walk. So refreshing.

Living on the island I have visited ‘the dales’ many times. It’s such a beautiful walk and there are many hidden gems that are only known to locals. The waterfalls are lovely and great for a cool dip after a nice walk, when you travel further to the 5th dale be mindful of your track, there are many tagged tracks set up by the HHH running group and the rangers that can sometimes confuse visitors. The area is magical and take your time when you visit 😊..... oh and take mozzie spray/cream

My family joined the Indian Ocean Experiences Tour for the Dales Hiking Trail. We had a wonderful time of exploring the forestry and looking for the different types of crabs, particularly the Robber Crabs. It was a nice hike ending at the waterfall to cool off.
I highly recommend joining Indian Ocean Experiences Tour as they make the hike much more interesting with what they can share with their knowledge. We would have walked passed many insects, trees etc had they not pointed them out.

This was a surprising and special discovery for me. Just 18km from the settlement, but right on the other side of the Island, down an easy 4WD track for the last couple of km, there is a clearly marked entrance to a walking trail to Dale's Waterfall. All along the well maintained trail, a mix of tracks and board walks, are excellent information boards encouraging the explorer to look closer and get informed.
The poster time was 30 mins each way but we were so distracted by blue crabs, sprouting Tahitian chestnuts, robber crabs and so, so many birds that it actually took us about 45 mins to reach the falls. Every minute was a treat but do make sure you press on to the end. It is worth the final uphill slog to stand under the freshwater falls. Perfection!

You really need to hire at car ta the airport when you arrive on Christmas Island. that way you can get to most of the scenic spots. Currently the road to Tain Jen Temple is closed until 2017 while they stabilise a rock fall. We drove out to the Dales as far as road signs would allow. The red crabs are migrating, probably a lunar month earlier than usual.. maybe because of the unseasonably high rainfall?
The hour long hike to the waterfall is well worth it. Much of it on boardwalk. Interpretive signs along the way. The falls themselves are deliciously cool and offer a good massage on your back as you stand under them. The landscape is different to any other limestone formations I've seen. The Tahitian chestnut trees are eerily exotic. Check out their root system
Take plenty of water and a camera.

The Dales have been designated by the Australian Govt for inclusion in the list of wetlands of international importance. We walked to Hugh Dale only and it was a fabulous walk through some really interesting terrain. See photos. The locals told us that we were bound to see Robber crabs and we did. Most of the walk is along a boardwalk but there are a lot of stairs. Don't expect a waterfall when you arrive at the end. Despite going to the Hugh Dales in the wet season there was only a trickle of water. Nevertheless it was a great walk. Take good walking shoes because despite it not having rained for a couple of days, the ground was still slippery.

Medium walk on Boardwalk and some small part of rougher terrain, many steps to take so not suitable for wheelchairs. The waterfall was pretty. Was able the stand underneath it. A range of crabs crossed my path..

The road to there is bumpy and narrow at some parts (only 4wd). But then a lovely walking tracks up to the waterfall. My fav part was encountering all crab types you can find there, the blue crap, the majestic Robber crap and of course the red crab. I’m glad and checked out the place.
