Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The big question: will the RAV4 make the trip back up the steep road?
We were told to not try that one, and left the RAV4 at the 2WD car park.
We were lucky to hitch a ride back with locals in a 4x4 ute with low range gearbox and difflock, i.e. no problem with the steep incline.
However, we heard of another party of 4 taking a Rav4 down the steep slope (no problem). On the way up, the RAV4 was did not have enough grunt to make it up, 3 passengers got off, and helped push the RAV4 back up...
If you were to catch a downpour while on the beach, the RAV4 might struggle on a wet road even with passengers pushing...
(as alternative, the RAV4 had no problem with the track to Winifred beach)

Dolly is a beautiful beach, its about the only beach on the Island that has some shade in which you can lay under and spend some time. It is also the beach where the sea turtles come and lay their eggs. It is sadly also the beach that gets dumped with indonesia's plastic garbage through out the year. the locas arrange clean ups to keep the beach in it's natural state. The beach is only accessible by car 4WD only. you then have to treck about 1k. its mostly shady but always carry water and sunblock with you.

Even though its 30 or so minutes from Settlement by 4WD and then a 45 minute walk on an amazing board walk, it's worth the effort. The last little descent onto the beach is a sight, looking out over the white sandy bay, coconut trees on the edge of the beach, it's great.
The beach is nice, not for swimming but at low tide there is a small rocky pool that you can sit in.
The tropical feel of the dense jungle by the beach is fantastic with the added bonus of red crabs, blue crabs and really big robber crabs coming out to say hi.
Take a picnic hamper and really enjoy the afternoon.
One tip though, if there hasn't been anyone there for a couple of days, when you walk down the board walk, carry a stick to wave in front of you, the spiders gang up and puts webs about face high along the way. Not a nice thing to walk into.

Had a 2WD and had to park the car at 4km lenght from the beach. It Was a hot and long walk. Mozzies were not too bad. Spent about 10 min on the beach to take pics and browse a little through the rubbish washed up there. I agree with other reviewers that I have seen more beautiful beaches in different parts of the world. The waters edge has sharp and slippery rocks not suitable to cool down in the water. The 2 hills up to get to my car are killers.

Wouldn't recommend this place to go in the water
Sharp reef and dangerous rocks
There are signs advising the same.

remote, clean, robber crabs galore and a great taste of eco tourism - untouched by the traumas of too many people in one place at a time - a real rain forrest experience just to get to the beach - you can hear the roar of the ocean before you even see a wave. Impressive, rough be careful.

As in most places on CI it is a bit of a hike to get to, but is worth it! The fact that you are in a beat up 4wd rental car makes the driving part that bit more fun!
This place lets you feel a little like Robinson Crusoe...bring food and water and chill out :)
And perhaps some insect repellant.

It's a 4 km walk from the the 2WD car park. On the way down there are two steep hills that seem to be mainly sand and gravel on the 4WD track. Once you get past the two steep hills it's a long walk to Dolly beach. The first half of the walk is along the 4WD track until you get to the 4WD car park from that car park there is in some parts a boardwalk through the rain forest that seems to stop and start quite randomly. The board walk itself is broken in parts with slats missing and broken slats. It also has a metal mesh covering that is loose and coming away in parts which is a definite trip hazard. We found that the direction to walk in was not always clear in between the different parts of the boardwalk.
Dolly beach was rather a disappointment as it was more a rocky outcrop than a beach.
Throughout the 4 km walk there was very little opportunity to sit and rest. When we got to Dolly beach there was nothing but the sand or a few sharp rocks to sit on. It was not a beach as such that you could go swimming in or even just walk in the water to cool down. There was nothing to make you want to linger there so we started making our way back to the car walking another 4 km to get there. The mosquito's were out in numbers and we had to keep moving to stop the mosquito's biting. The two steep hills we had come down at the start of the journey that had a lot of loose rock and gravel proved very Difficult for us to get back up to our car again. It took a lot out of us and made us very wary of the difficulties of some of the walks on the island

At the beginning of the walk to Dolly beach there is a sign that among other things warns of the possibility of large waves , it is a good idea to take heed of this . We recently did the walk , which took around 45 minutes, is very pretty as it goes through the rainforest with ferns and crabs and palms all along the way. Only thing missing is a place or two to sit to have a rest !!. The beach was very beautiful but the only place to swim was in a rockpool which looked so safe!!! It was close to the shore, behind some rocks and about waist deep. 5 of our group got in and had been enjoying themselves in it for several minutes when out of the blue a larger than usual wave came in ..and ..in an instant the whole scenario changed . the extra water rushing in between the rocks raised the water level rapidly and washed 4 of them onto the rocks closer to the beach , one was lucky to realise what was about to happen and ducked under the water and hung on but the rest were washed onto the rock and received abrasions on arms legs and back. They were lucky, it could have been a lot worse. .I think the sign really needs to be at the beach not at the beginning of the walk.
You do also need to watch carefully where you are walking on the boardwalk as some of the mesh has worn and bent back and is easy to trip on if you don't watch where you are putting your feet. ...

The views are beautiful, and the walk to get there is littered with many crabs of all varieties. Robber crabs galore in the palm trees on Dolly. It is a shame that lots of rubbish washes up here and the parks and wildlife ask if you can fill a bag to take back with you. A great initiative to preserve this small piece of paradise.
