Sighted from cruise ship

Reaching the Panama Canal via cruise ship and learning the "Hows and Whys" of the project was very interesting..."Seeing is truly believing!"

Well it's a train ride. Nice scenery whizzes by. Attendants talked to each other - very loud and in Spanish. We got a good seat, not everyone did. Dirty windows prevent any really good photos. Train rides are always fun. Take a car for the return trip, hopefully you get a driver that isn't in a hurry like Antonio, our... More

The low-down: early start (7.15am), expensive ($50 return), takes an hour to get up to Colon but offers fabulous views of the canal and surrounding rainforrest on both sides from within the (ice-cold airconditioned) carriages or better still from the out-in-the-air viewing platforms/carriages. It would have got another star but for one thing: the return journey is not until 5.15pm.... More

The windows on the canal side were so fogged over -for most of the trip. The regular windows in the other cars likely were fine. WAY TOO COLD in the observation car. Bring warm fleece!

We were in a "viewing car" which is elevated and with big windows on both sides. Unfortunately, it leaves quite early that the windows remain foggy for a while before you can see anything. Further, you better carry a jacket or sweater because it is very cold with the air conditioner. I know that being in Panama, a warm outfit is... More

The train passes thru the jungle of Panama and its lake, very little to see with regards to the canal. It's an hour ride and it is very expensive at $25 one way. And once you get to Colon you have to wait until 5pm to get back to Panama city if you intend to ride back the train. There... More

This is a supremely comfortable train. The journey takes only an hour and travels through scenic countryside, including over lakes. Drinks are available on the train. The one-way fare is $25 per person, payable on board. The train leaves Panama City at 7.15 in the morning and returns from Colon at 5.15 in the afternoon. It's probably not a good... More

To be honest, the bus ride to Colon was far more interesting than the train journey back to Panama City. We certainly would not entertain the idea of taking the train both ways - it leaves far too early in the morning, gives you far too long in Colon, where even the local people warn against walking anywhere - far... Although the schedule for the Panama Canal Railroad is very inconvenient (only a few times a day since they carry freight most of the time), it is an interesting ride through some rainforest, Gatun Lake area, etc. Very comfortable seating and viewing from the upper level of the main coach which is the best place to sit.

PanamaRoadRunners thought we would like the train ride. Neil took us on a great tour before dropping us at the rail station in Colon for the evening trip back to Panama City. The train trip was an outstanding view of the canal and country side. Our next trip to Panama we will more than likely ride the train again, with... More
