About
Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo is his only work in Latin America and the tropics. The building was designed to tell the story of how the isthmus of Panama rose from the sea, uniting two continents, separating a vast ocean in two, and changing the planet's biodiversity forever.

- Sue MWilliamsburg, Virginia1,535 contributionsHard to Miss!We admired the exterior of the museum as we headed towards the causeway to get to the Fuerte Amador Puerto and as part of our tour of Panama City. You cannot miss this structure since it is so colorful. According to our tour guide, Panamanians are very proud of this museum since Frank Gehry designed the building and the different colors are suppose to represent the diverse population of Panama.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 January 2024
- PhillyjaniePhiladelphia, Pennsylvania219 contributionsMUST SEEBeautiful museum with detailed and informative exhibits in both English and Spanish. It was incredibly well done but I’d expect no less from the only building in Latin America designed by Frank Gehry. The gardens are also a must!Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 January 2024
- uclatraveler9Santa Barbara, California1,316 contributionsFantastic!Absolutely fantastic! The museum was incredible. We took our 4 and 1 year olds and they loved it. It's a little pricy but totally worth it. Be warned that they close fairly early in the afternoon! The aquarium section was awesome. We also loved the room that was all about prehistoric animals. The 360 video was also very cool. Their docents were wonderful! They all appeared to be university students, and were clearly passionate about their topics. They were all friendly and did a great job of approaching us to guide us through their section. There is a nice little cafe on site that has pastries, coffee, smoothies, and juice. The bathrooms were well maintained. The museum is stroller accessible.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 January 2024
- marylandtraveler60 contributionsFantastic museumThe Biomuseo is fantastic. Exhibits in the museum explain the natural history of the formation of the isthmus and the impact of eons of geological change on plants and animals in the region. The explanations are lucid and well illustrated with clever and informative displays. Other exhibits show the human history of the settlement of Panama beginning with the first human arrivals and continuing to the present The building itself is beautiful and surrounding gardens are worth their own visit.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 February 2024
- Aer5 contributionsIncredibly welcoming service! The location of the building and the building itself are impressive. The theme of the museum and the various ways it is presented was really very interesting. The gardens around the museum are very rich; the immense fig tree is, well, immense. We saw so many beautiful birds and heard even more. It is almost difficult not to witness a colibri in action. They even serve good espresso! But what made this 5/5 for us, was the service all staff members provided. In each room we were welcomed by somebody that then gave us a short introduction of the room and explained us how things worked. Never experienced that in any other museum.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 July 2024

Remember when opened some years ago, I refused to go because found it excessively expensive the fee of over $25,00 for an adult (almost the same cost for museums in Europe and much more extensive) but now after a few years and out with some friends saying that they dropped the entry costs, we decided have a go, OK let’s contribute to the local economy. But still I think that “discriminating” entry fees for foreigners and locals is not a thing to do if the country “wannabe” at the level of a 1st world nation.
The colourful structure is eye-catching, better from a distance but under the roof, looking at all those concrete and steel (modern jungle resemblance?) well, they will have to keep a close maintenance program because here metals get oxidized pretty fast and some humidity stains are already in some areas...
If have little time (and not into science/history) better don’t go, stay outside, have a picture of this architectural marvel and leave…. If have time and into science/history OK… at the beginning when saw those (probably life size) white plastic animal sculptures I said to myself oh no plastic, but those are depictions of extincted fauna that probably crossed the isthmus… prepare to read, read and read (because lots of information boards), it’s interesting but as wrote at the beginning, depends the visitor…
The flora area outside is nice (direct interaction is always better) small; the aquarium is just OK (can’t be compare to the Georgia or the European ones).
This building is now iconic among others works representing Panama (F&F tower, the Cathedral and the tower of Old Panama because of its historical importance, BBVA now stayed small)

I was interested in the architectural exterior and spent time and walked around the ground floor where there is a free exhibition. I was less inclined to pay an entrance fee for what appeared to be a “climate change” tongue lashing only to have seen some of the most appalling trash heaps and garbage throughout the city. When the tide is out, what washes up is an epic failure. Just wondering how much this museum cost to construct vs utilizing the “moneys” for cleanup crew at the waters edges? The hypocrisy is painful.

The museum was designed by world renowned architect Frank Gehry. Its located in Amador Causeway, Panama city. The Biomuseo highlights Panama's natural and cultural history. A one point you can view aa three-level projection with 10 screens featuring Panama's natural wonders.

We visited the Biomuseo on our visit to Panama and loved it. The building is a Gehry design and really cool. The museum was also really interesting. If you like to take photos the building offers some great opportunities.

Very nice museum to visit when you have about two hrs to spare. Regular price, without any discounts, is $18 for an adult. Includes a panoramic movie presentation, and guides are available in each exhibit to answer questions in English and Spanish. Includes a smaller, but very nice aquarium. Very informative cultural experience also with info on the early native population and early settlements by the Spanish. Small café with good coffee and pastries available at the end as you watch the ships enter and leave the Canal.

We arrived at 11 a.m. on a Saturday and it was quite quiet. You will not need a guide as all the staff of the museum prefer to explain in English or Spanish. Very interactive museum, several totens with explanations, you will be surprised by the history of Panama and its biodiversity. The souvenir shop is pretty weak, a pity.

There are serious reasons for the location and design of this museum and you learn a lot about the animals, plants and peoples of Panama. Enjoyable and informative. The gardens were in need of some care and attention, but overall a meaningful way to spend a couple hours.

This is one of the best natural history museums you'll find anywhere in the world. It's filled with English language speaking guides to help you interpret the various displays.
If you want to know how the isthmus of Panama was formed, geologically speaking, you'll get the best lesson imaginable at this museum.
There's even a room with life-size recreations of virtually every animal, bird, and reptile in Panama along with a touch screen system to identify and describe each one.
The building is multicolored, and stands out from tens of miles away. The gardens around the building are beautiful. There is plenty of free parking with guards.
And to my surprise, and Joy, there's a coffee shop with a fantastic view of the bay.

Interesting building houses displays of plant, animal and marine diversity. Displays are interesting and informative. Outside the building itself, there are gardens and ponds that continue the story. A small cafe provides refreshments and a place to rest your feet.

Do you have to buy a ticket online the day you plan to visit? Or can you buy online in advance and go when you want?
Written 4 July 2022
I simply bought a ticket at the museum on the Sunday morning that I visited. I do see "general admission" tickets are available on-line at their website, but it's not clear if they are for a specific day.

Panama City, Panama
Saludos.
Saludos y esperamos verte pronto.
