- 405kerryanneGreenfield Center, New York11 contributionsGreat ViewsFirst, we walked up early in the day to avoid the heat which is important with the heat index in January. There was a really nice gentleman half way up selling water. A plus because we did not bring any. The views were amazing from both sides of the Mtn., and the air was fairly pretty clear, so the photo ops were good. Did not see any wildlife except birds and a couple of butterflies, but still really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend, and if you’re not the hiking type there are chairs along the way to stop and rest.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- Laura M7 contributionsBeautiful nature experience in the city!Very beautiful! I saw a lot of different animals. I am a young girl, I went alone and felt so safe. The walk is about 30min and 30min to come back. The jungle and the view are wonderful. I recommend 100%!Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 February 2024
- HBandWF60 contributionsWorth the walk for the wildlife and viewsTook an Uber (as recommended by hotel - not really walkable from old town) to Mi Pueblito. Walk begins from the left of the cultural center. Easy paved path to views of canal, Miraflores locks, the old and new Panama City. We saw 3 slots which was amazing as well as lots of birds. Well worth the walk. Bring water and a hat because although it’s in the forest, there are lots of hot, sunny spots.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 February 2024

Great little hike up the hill. Be aware that if you go at the posted opening time, you may not be able to get through the gate. We were there at 8am and waited u til 820a for someone to unlock the gate. Nice easy-moderate hike up a paved road. Benches along the way to stop and rest if needed. Mostly jungle shaded path but take water and a hat. Lovely views at the top

Steady uphill climb, with a few steeper sections About 45 minutes to the top at a moderate pace, stopping to take in the views. Pretty flowers toward the bottom. Butterflies. Flag at top. Nice views from top of the Canal area.

It's a nice, easy hike that has potential to be so much better! First, I'd not recommend going by public transit (my Uber was USD 3). Apparently, there are 2 entrances, I went through the admin. building (no fees). The way to the top takes approx. 45 min, but it's all paved and not too steep. I wish there was a deck or some structure to see the view, but there isn't. You have to take a peak between the bushes. Also, be aware that there are no shops, water fountains, nothing.

This is a must see when visiting Panama. You can see the entire city when you get up top. It is about a 15 minute hike up. Good exercise and beautiful scenery. You can take amazing photos of all of Panama.

Really nice way to get some steps / cardio while enjoying nature and the city views.
The road is paved with some stairs along the way. Thew views at the top are nice. The climb is about 30 min each way and not steep.

I used to go to Ancon Hill every weekend, then I had a bad experience. One day, probably sunday, Me, my wife and three nieces went to walk all the way up. We enjoyed all the sights of the animals like monkeys and rabbits, multicolor birds like Tucans and wildlife on our way to the top. On the top of the Ancon Hill you'll probably have one of the best views of Panamá. From one side you can see the Panamá Canal and from the other a great view of the City of Panamá. Then, how can my rating for Ancon Hill be terrible? The answer is: There was a felony that day. A couple of tourists that were hiking the Ancon Hill like 300 mts behind us were intercepted by a thief in the middle of the way to the top. The raider put a knife in the neck of the man and stole all the money, watch and jewerly to both of them. The man ran to the top screaming for help, but when we finally found a police man on the top of the Ancon Hill, it was too late. The Police could never find the thief. So, it's really a beautiful place, but if you want to visit it, please go on group. There's nothing more important that your security.

The hike to the top of the hill is not difficult but well over a mile. The road up is cemented and fenced so there was little wildlife to be seen. Even with water it was exhausting in the heat. We were disappointed that the area around the flag had been fenced off so we did not get a good panoramic few of the city. Only the New City and parts of the canal were visible. If you take a taxi, or better yet Uber to the trailhead, instruct them to drop you off at the Canal Authority Administration Building on Gorgas Road. The building is beautiful, and cool, in itself and the trail starts up the hill from there.

We spent two weeks touring beautiful Panama and visiting Ancon Hill was a PTY highlight. Our first day started in Casco Viejo (beautiful and another review), then a 5 min cab ride to Ancon Hill--which cost 5USD, you could see the destination from Casco Viejo but trust me, take the cab ride as the neighborhood between is not for walking through.
The cab driver dropped us off and offered to pick us up--we decided on an hour which was perfect for walking up, around, taking pics and walking back down. We are in good shape so you might ask him to drive you to the top and wait or meet you at the bottom.
We passes one security guard--no fee was collected. We did see several cars, cabs and such pass but not too many to be a distraction--but enough to feel safe. Much of our walk was in private. The trail was actually a paved road and the views are absolutely to die for.
Fromt he top (and near the top) you will see Casco Viejo, the Amador Causeway (another must see and visit), Panama City skyline and the entire canal zone--which we visited after Ancon Hill--another cab ride (10USD) and he then waited an hour to take us back to our hotel. Make this arrangement when you get to Casco Viejo and pick a meeting place or get their number and ask a bartender to call them.
Anyway, we saw many birds and beautiful plant life--it was hot but wonderful. Bring water as there are no opportunitites to buy some there. There are restrooms at the top, and people enjoying the view. You could even catch a cab from the top if you get tired--the walk is really doable if you enjoy a moderate walk.
Don't leave this attraction out of your itinery--you will love it: Check out my pics and you will agree.
Don't go alone, use a taxi and bring water: Thumbs up from Travelpapi!

Is it possible to find/get a taxi to return to the city center? I would be able to Uber if I ordered one from the city/with wifi, but not sure how easy it would be to return?

Is it closed on Saturday to tourists? What about Sunday?
Written 12 September 2017
The climb to the top of Ancon Hill would not be closed as it's an outdoor hiking road. I would guess that the beautiful Port Authority building, as a government building, would be closed on weekends. Enjoy!
