Our family spent about an hour in the cathedral and on the grounds. We had seen St. Michael's 15 years earlier, so chose to go here this time. Saint Sophia is not as elaborate, but is the original cathedral and not a reconstructed building. It serves as a museum now and no pictures are allowed inside. It was very interesting... More

Very beautiful and different from other monuments in Europe, but in winter is frozen. The museums inside are a bit boring.

All all impressions of this part of the world come to reality on visiting St Sophia's. It's what you expect the Ukraine to look like. Loads of photo opportunities the snow added to the vision of some Bulgakov novel.Hey you don't get that in many reviews do you.? 120uah gets you in to most things. make sure you go up... More

A short walk from the Hotel Dnipro, this is a must see church. The inside is magnificent. While there I was able to listen to a choir that added to the moment. I am not religious however I do appreciate architecture.

If you go to any of Kiev's stunning churches, this one is worth a trip. The bell tower climb alone is worth the entry fee. The highlight though is walking into St Sophia itself. The dimly lit interior is something out of a movie. The cathedral construction started close to a 1000 years ago. Inside, where you can't take photos... More

Very photogenic cathedral. The frescos were pretty. The location of Saint Sophia is very central, and is a very easy walk from Maidan Nezalezhnosti.

Saint Sophia is equally beautiful as Pechersk Lavra and has also a very rich and interesting history. I recommend a guided tour in order to understand the history of the cathedral, of the 11th century frescoes and pay attention to outstanding details which matter - like the massive silver shrine, which is the most beautiful shrine I have ever see.... A masterpiece built from stone, better preserved than Haghia Sophia in Istanbul (though a lot smaller too). Still the height of some 29m and the manyfold pillars allow for some fascinating pictures (if you can avoid the guards ;-). The preservation of the murals is excellent - one cannot help to be deeply moved by this about 1000 year old... More
