More
Complex of the Holy Cross Exaltation Church is an architectural monument of 1811-1841 protected by the state; situated in the historical area of Podil in Kyiv. Its building in classical style was erected in 1811-41 to replace the Holy Cross Exaltation wooden church that was built in 1748 at the expense of residents of Kozhymyaky district of Podil, whose craft shop was part of the famous Kyiv Brotherhood. Outstanding artist RP Svetlytskyy painted the interior of the Holy Cross Exaltation Church (later he got married in it himself). The Holy Cross Exaltation Church is also famous as a place where the famous Ukrainian and Russian writer Mykhail Bulgakov was baptized in 1891 – Bulgakov’s family rented an apartment in the nearby house on 10B Vozdvyzhenska Street, and their apartment owner incidentally was Matfey Butovskiy, the then Father Superior of the Holy Cross Exaltation Church. In 1984, the Holy Cross Exaltation Church was restored. Presently an acting Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

This church is kind of decent to check out if you're in the nearby area. It wasn't anything special but worth seeing once.

While the church itself is very impressive in a form of Siberian Baroque style it was the private bell ringing demonstration that our guide had arranged. We climbed 56 steep and narrow steps to the belfry where the bell ringer Arthur, previously a rock musician,...More
