- petergoode2Hendersonville, North Carolina516 contributionsAn absolute do not miss site, a highlight of our Belgrade visitThe St Sava Temple most definitely represented a highlight of our several hour visit to Belgrade per our Viking river cruise. This is a massive structure, evidently the largest orthodox Church in the world. The exterior is in if itself quite photogenic, but once you were inside, the mosaics and ubiquitous gold are absolutely overwhelming. It definitely helps to have a guide to help you figure out the symbolism and religious figures who are featured on the walls and ceiling. Evidently there will be an elevator that can bring people to the top of the dome, but that is a work in progress. We would put this site on a par with the Melk Abbey which is farther upstream, an almost obscene use of gold. Without question, if your travels bring you to Belgrade, you will not wish to miss this spot. It is worth mentioning that this evidently is a very famous site for pickpockets, a couple on our tour did see a couple of attempts, but fortunately we did not encounter any, but no doubt there are some visitors who while craning their necks and admiring the ceiling are being relieved of their wallets.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 October 2023
- raybyerleyMandeville, Louisiana4,473 contributionsOne of the most beautiful churches on earth 10/09We did quite a bit of walking around Belgrade on 10/09, and ended at this masterpiece orthodox temple. My wife thought rivaled St. Peters in Rome. Pictures of the outside and many of the inside including the fantastic ceilings and of St. Sava.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 October 2023
- CassimaSKBicester, United Kingdom247 contributionsJust must seeDon't miss it even if not religious - it's a magnificent church, a true architectural masterpiece. Inside, all the decorations are made from mosaics and it is breath-taking thinking of how much work it took to create all of it. So stunning. Outside there was a mini Christmas market and some souvenir stalls (we travelled in the end of December).Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 January 2024

It was quite the highlight of our day and an absolute must visit when your in Belgrade From the outside I had no clue as to the magnificence of the interior. - NikosVisitSerres, Greece431 contributionsΠολύ Όμορφος ΝαόςThe only reason I didn't score excellently in my Cretan is because during the period we went around the temple there was a lot of restoration work going on. Wonderful temple with architecture and decoration. The only thing I didn't like is the entrance ticket to the temple.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2024
- Lyubomir TSofia, Bulgaria55 contributionsA temple worth visitingMe and my girlfriend went there on Lazereva Subota (Vrbnitsa). There were many families and children, all the joy and happiness around. Everybody was very kind and the temple itself was full with people celebrating. About the temple itself - it was simply amazing. Its worth to visit it and light a candle for health.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2024
- Luv2travel_RSMoncton, Canada558 contributionsOne of the prettiest churches in EuropePrepare to be amazed! The outside of this Orthodox church is really nice but the inside will blow you away. Very fancy finish on all walls and ceiling. As mentioned in other reviews, it's not finished yet but getting close. Interesting fact about this church, it has no pews/benches so churchgoers need to stand for the full service. That's why attendance is less than hoped for by local clergy.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 May 2024

The crosses on top of the structure are made of gold, everything from the outside is marble, and the lower floor is beautiful on another level.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 August 2024

Oh wow! Step inside and be amazed. Our first time in an orthodox church and it was absolutely mind blowing. The art, the gold, the opulence, the height, the light, did I mention the gold???
Unmissable and definitely a must do. Don't forget the basement. Free entry and no grouchy caretakers (Like in other European cities). I do wish there was some sort of tour to tell us about it though as obviously it's a place to worship so there was no write up or explanation in English. You could finish it in 15 minutes on a trot or spend around 45 minutes like us which was perfect. Shops inside sell bracelets from 260-900 RSD and religious souvenirs from around 150.

St. Sava Church is often referred to as “The Temple of St. Sava”. Saint Sava was the first Archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an important figure in medieval Serbia. The church is built on the presumed location of the burial place of the ashes of St. Sava. The church was designed in the 1920s to replicate the dimensions and architecture of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul’, so the style is both Serbian and Byzantine. The first stone was laid in 1935 but work stopped in 1941, but has been ongoing since 1984. Parts of the church may be closed depending on the present schedule of works.
St. Sava Church is surrounded by a park, found near Slavija roundabout. Not surprisingly, as one of the largest churches in the world and being built on a hill, the church is visible from much of the city especially when illuminated after dark.
The building work did not detract from the peace and serenity, especially in the crypt. There is much to see and contemplate in the icons, orthodox murals and rich gilt coverings of walls and ceiling. Jesus looks down from the enormous dome the main church space, inviting your prayers.
Entry is free. There are souvenir shops inside. The park outside has a statue of St. Sava and advertising for the Serbian and Russian sponsors of some of the work.

Very impressive and beatufull cathedral. Possibly the biggest Ortodox Church in the World. Must see. Even there are still ongoing works in interior of the cathedral, I was impress by its monumental and beautifully simple architecture and amazing mosaics. Visit underground chapel. Beautiful mosaics and frescoes !

We visited here with a small group as part of a Danube river cruise.
Still not quite finished, it was interesting to hear the history of the stops and starts of the building work and the details of the construction around the church especially the huge dome.
Very ornate, stunning detail in view of the huge space in the church.
Well worth a visit.

The Temple of Saint Sava was built near the place where his relics were burned. You can see this church from many parts of town because it is so huge. It is the largest Orthodox church in Serbia, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches and it ranks among the largest churches in the world. The first stone was laid in 1935. This temple is huge and beautiful. Even with the construction going on inside and out this is one of the most beautiful churches we have ever seen.

Well having lots of time, myself walked up to this place from the city centre, it was approximately a 40 minutes walk, truly worth it. Its an orthodox Christian Church, with very beautiful paintings and carvings throughout. Well as you step inside one feels the cold air and the surrounding atmosphere is so pure that one just want to spend more time there. Well since was here in the Serbian summer the coolness felt inn was very welcoming. A must visit place for all ages.

St. Sava Temple is the biggest orthodox Cathedral in Serbian Country and it is located in Karadjordjev Park, in the center of the city. Really, it is impressive and it s the typical orthodox church with the traditional dome. The exterior was completed in 2004, and the interior is nowadays under construction, so it is expect to finish in some years. Pitifully the interior is not possible to visit, only a little part in the entrance. So, we hope to return to see it finish in an early future.

Amongst one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in the world, Saint Sava is the main iconic church in Belgrade. Saint Sava is not far from the city centre. You cannot go to Belgrade without coming here regardless of whether you are religious or not.
The main part of the church is still undergoing renovations and you are not able to enter this part. You can go downstairs to the crypt which is free of charge. The crypt is where there are beautiful icons on the walls of Saints. You are able to purchase religious crosses, icons and gifts at the gift shop. There is a smaller church next to St Sava where prayers are held on major Saint days and on Sunday’s that you are able to attend.
When visiting please make sure you are dressed modestly. To the women, please don’t wear shorts, mini skirts or tops that expose your shoulders/chests. Men, please don’t wear shorts or flip flops when visiting. This is a place worship and dressing respectfully is a must the same way you would dress in any other place of worship.

I visited St Sava a few days ago and was disappointed that I could not purchase a book about the history of the building and its contents. would have thought that there would be a market for such a book in English, but I have searched several book stores in the city without success. If anyone has any ideas where such a book may be purchased please let me know.

Hello, how can I book a visit for a group of 65 people at the Temple? Is it necessary or we can just go inside? Thank you
Written 15 March 2019
I can't tell you if you'll need to book for a large group; probably not, as the church is very spacious.

Is saint sava open for a marriage ceremony for foreigners? Or just serbians?
Written 16 July 2016
Yes, you can also arrange your marriage there.
Written 17 July 2016
Yes! You can see it from outside anytime any day. The inside is under construction and is not worth the effort. However, as I said before, you can go inside on a Sunday.
