About
Today’s Museum of Yugoslavia was called the Museum of Yugoslav History until the end of 2016. The name was changed twenty years after the Museum of Yugoslav History was established (1996) by merging and simultaneously dissoluting of the two institutions: the Memorial Center “Josip Broz Tito” and the Museum of the Revolution of Yugoslav Nations and Ethnic Minorities. Due to the socio-historical circumstances, wars and the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, these museums became a burden, unwanted witnesses of the past, traces of which were being thoroughly erased from the present. The funds of these two institutions served as the basis on which, according to a political decision, the new museum was established. Even though this musealization of Yugoslavia was supposed to “put it on the shelf” in accordance with the understanding of a museum as a storage place for “old and unnecessary things”, it turned out that the collections, histories, documentation and employees of these two insti

The museum covers the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Socialist Yugoslavia as well as the life of Josip Broz Tito. Tito's grave is located in one of the museum buildings. A lot of interesting information about Tito.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 December 2023

Nevertheless , it is a museum containing all things Tito and his brand of socialism . So if you are into the gifts he gets around the world from other world leaders , it r how revered he is in life, then go ahead and visit the museum . It is a small museum - good for a 20-30minutes visit but as it is out of the way of the main tourist area around Belgrade fortress and old town, unless you really love him and see his tomb at the adjoining house of flowers , then drop by .Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 May 2024
- Helen R22 contributionsTito and the history of YugoslaviaA little bit out of the main drag but the number 41 bus or a taxi gets you there. A very reasonable entrance fee gives access to a museum detailing the history of the country and numerous artifacts from Titos collection. It includes insights into his life. There are gardens with numerous statues and works of art in as well as the Tito mausoleum . There are toilets and a small. Coffee shop. Be warned this is built on an incline. There are slopes for wheel chairs but they appeared almost vertical! The museum is several rooms built.t in a line up the incline with several steps to each level.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 September 2024

I cannot understand why this place gets such great reviews. The main museum is a collection of tat given to Tito by other countries. Do you really want to pay to see an ashtray with a JAT Airlines logo on it or a 1970s telephone or the keys to some cities? You don't learn anything about the country or its breakup into the different states. It's not a museum about the country, it's a museum about Tito. The day we visited they had the heating cranked up to tropical when it was freezing outside. Of course, we were wearing thick jumpers, winter coats, scarves etc which made the visit even more unpleasant as it was far too hot. Part of the 3rd building has reopened with a small exhibition about a children's book and author. Great if you have kids, we don't! Overall, a complete waste of time.

We walked from the Old Town here and it was a good long walk if you want to but the last part getting under the autoroute and over the railway was a bit challenging. We took bus 41 back. The main building is under renovation which was a shame. We enjoyed seeing Tito’s Mausoleum and the gifts museum was ok but we would have liked more history.

We visited on a monday as part of a group tour on a Danube river cruise.
It was quite interesting to visit here. Largely based around the tomb of Tito and his wife and displays of photos and details of his funeral.
He was an important world leader for 40 years and warrants this historical notation.
We spent around an hour there which was plenty.

This is a great museum if you want more information about Yugoslavia. There are two sides of the museum. The left side is mostly gifts given by other nation to Josep Broz Tito. This was not very interesting. The right side was the history of Yugoslavia. How did it start? What happened in the Second World War? What was the role of Tito? This is worth visiting for an hour. It is only a shame there is no information about the ending of Yugoslavia. Afterwards combine this (within the same ticket) with the mausoleum of Tito, which will take about 20 minutes. This is a great museum and an absolute must-visit in Belgrade.

There is a lot here and it would be difficult to appreciate it fully without taking the tour. Take the tour! The English-speaking tour was at 11 on the Saturday we went, and it was excellent. We learned so much about the history of Yugoslavia and Serbia and Tito’s place in it. It would have been much less engaging without the context provided by the tour, although still worth seeing. These were some of the best-kept grounds and gardens we have seen in Serbia.

This modernised museum is a serious attempt to tell the history of the federal state of Yougoslavia as objectively as possible.
It all started after the first World War, till the end, 7 years ago, when Montenegro became independent. You will see, hear, read about music, art, politics, war, peace, economics...even about hatred and love.
You'll see and hear speeches of the political leaders (sit down every now and then, and listen to Tito)
Modern concept: texts on cardboard, lots of black plastic and so on.
At the end of my long walk I said to the lady at the reception: "I have always thought that I knew the truth about Yougoslavia, but now I know I don't" The lady bowed her head and said: "we also don't know the truth, we also don't know why.."
When I slowly walked to the public transport to go back to the city center, I said to myself: " The end of Yougoslavia? Maybe not yet..."

This complex of museums consists of The House of Flowers (where Josip Broz Tito is burried), The Old museum with some of the gifts Tito received from from all over the world, and May 25 museum which is a high-tech exhibitions of the self-managements, socialist period achievements, from architercture to lifestyle and consumer goods.
This beautiful complex is a "must" when in Belgrade - ex-capital of ex-Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia.

Ha riaperto? A dicembre 2017 era aperta solo la parte con la tomba di Tito...mentre la grande struttura principale, quella davanti, sul piazzale, era in ristrutturazione.
Grazie.
