Go for a couple of hours. The best part of the entire exhibit is the Hindu art on the lower floor. The rest is mainly Bulgarian artist. Look for the painting Lucifer by a German painter. Very spooky.

This gallery complex houses Modern ( 19th and 20th C ) and Contemporary Art from both Bulgarian and international artists.
My visit today was to the Modern Art section ( front of the building ). Three floors comprising 28 galleries with 2d and 3d artworks from the mid-1800s to late 1900s ...
Excellent curating and very easy to follow the progression of art during these two centuries. Friendly guards looking after a fabulous collection. A must visit for any art lover.

This was without doubt one of the highlights of my visit to Sofia.
The new home to the bulk of the National Gallery's collection, it is a much more fitting building than the crumbling Royal Palace and combines new and old sections - mirroring the collections contained within.
The basement houses an exhibition (during Jan 2017 a wonderful Catalan modern art collection). Above are three floors of galleries arranged largely by period and style.
There is a lot to see there - I spent two and a half hours (racing through some parts, spending longer in others). I'd give it 2-3 hours.
Being Sofia, there is no cafe in the myseum, butt some option nearby and no shop to speak of. There are toilets dotted around and lifts for improved access.

I'm giving the highest rating only based on the facade of the building itself. It was the State Printing House, now it houses the National Gallery for Foreign Art. Inside you'll see..well, works of art of non-Bulgarian artists. No famous names, but the museum owns one of the richest collections of African art in the region, which is also one of the permanent exhibitions.
When in Sofia you can't miss this building - simply for the fact that it's right at the back of the most popular landmark of the city - the St. Alexander Nevski cathedral.

Stay at least 4 hours to enjoy the huge collection of over 1700 art works. Here are the masterpieces of the Bulgarian classics. There are many works by European masters and several halls with the art of Asia and Africa.
The building was built 1881-83 designed by the Viennese architect Friedrich Schamberberger. Today the gallery has 28 halls on 4 floors. The ticket costs 5 euros, 50% discount for adults and students. Every Thursday the ticket is only 1 euro. Closed on Mondays. There is a paid parking nearby, but up to two hours a maximum. The closest metro station is Sofia University.

This museum is located across the road from the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral. We spent an afternoon in it and really enjoyed it. This museum is massive and we did not have time to see it all. We concentrated on the extensive Bulgarian art collection. The earlier art was lighter than the art of the late 20th century located on the 5th floor. I was struck by just how dark and bleak this period of history was in Bulgarian history. The art did give me more insight to the history of this area.
I would definitely recommend spending some time in this museum.
